out of all the movies, this is the one i would have expected least to be based on a graphic novel

I must have seen an advert or preview for the graphic novel containing the first couple of pages, because I was listening to the description of the premise and suddenly realized it sounded familiar.

A webcomic, actually. A very high quality webcomic for sure, but graphic novel is a bit of a strong term. I read it in high school and I have some vague memories of it, but from the trailer they really only took the basic premise (schlubby guy holds his gay friend's "marry me" sign while she's in the bathroom, pop star promptly marries him on stage) and ran with it, instead of taking plot points from what I remember as a creative and weird story. Could be that I remember it wrong though, and the meandering style of a webcomic doesn't lend itself well to film adaptation at all

Jennifer Lopez is actually a pretty decent actress. The problem was she became a superstar and people stopped directing her and giving her notes. Which is why you get the same faux sweet nonsense from her every time.

She was very good in Out of Sight but that's where it ended A string of awful films since. Very poor choices by her. There was her virtuous Pretty Woman role as a hotel maid, some wedding planning debacle, that weird thing with Affleck and of course her Jodie Foster gone bad impersonation in Enough. I had already long since had enough...of her movies.

I liked it. It was fun and I was in a good mood as I left the cinema. Of course I knew exactly how the movie was gonna go, but that’s honestly why I watch rom-coms. It’s nice to see a lighthearted story that you know is gonna end well sometime. Not everyone is in the target audience for movies like this.

It's a slow start as far as the Romance goes in the film. However, realistically you wouldn't expect instant chemistry between two strangers like in Notting Hill, because that is fantasy. Real love is based on hard work like the film says. Marry me isn't brilliant, and yet it is entertaining and not a razzie either.

I don't know what it is about most Rom-Coms. I want to try to see more, but so few of them actually balance the comedy and romance in a way that seems right. Must just be me, but the only one I've genuinely loved was a Japanese film called "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl". Only one that seems to look at young love from many angles while making it a charming night in a colorful town. Ahem, anyway, this already comes off more like a parody than an honest attempt from that clip. I mean, I want to get into the emotions of it and all and don't want to say I don't sometimes enjoy something a little more primal in romance than logical like some of the Disney Princess films, but man does that just come off as goofy.

I was dragged to see this movie in my defense! I don't mind rom coms, there should be contrivances and stuff happening on cue. It's just that I don't get why they are attracted to each other. The movie never explains their motivations. And every second was a J-Lo song interspersed shamelessly throughout the film. The thing is that as much as I have misgivings about this film there is an audience for it.

Rom coms can be great as a bit of light hearted fluff to cheer one up, but the best ones have a certain je ne c’est quoi. A lot of the magic is down to the casting eg the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks pairing (can’t bear Owen Wilson, flat personality and looks like an ant eater bless him) and a great script is key.
