This was really helpful to watch. My boyfriend is also south Asian (Indian) and Muslim too. I haven't met his family properly yet (apart from video call) as they all still live in India but we're planning to go and meet them so this gives me some ideas on what to do. As I'm also very nervous but excited to meet them and to see where his family is from and his home town as he's met all of my family

Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis are an intelligent, vibrant community. The issue with them is their adherence to ideas like caste (Hinduism) or literal interpretations of books (Sharia in Islam). My friend is a wonderful woman of White Anglo Atheist background who married who a Canadian educated Indian Muslim mechanical engineer in a great career. He had a wonderful personality. 4 years into the marriage, my friend confided in me that her husband actually has a Second wife (married under Sharia) of Pakistani origin in Toronto. She told me she knew her husband wanted two wives when they married so she is 100% okay with it. They still seemed happy together even though her husband was spending a quarter of the year in Toronto with his second. Unfortunately, 1 year after my friend confessed to me, they began separation and divorce proceedings. My poor friend later told me that life soon became hell.

It’s great to see that the man in this relationship actually knows about Islam and respects it and brings this topic up with his partner telling her about the boundaries he lives within according to his belief and culture and she accepts it and learns from it. Compared to a guy who comes from the same Bengali/muslim background but doesn’t know anything about his religion or have any boundaries to teach because he himself doesn’t understand or believe in Islam or respects the culture- so instead of teaching his wife about his faith he instead learns to live like a complete Athiest because his wife doesn’t really believe in Christianity either despite being born Christian so choose to raise the kids open minded allowing them to choose their belief (don’t agree with this- because Islam says the man should lead the household hence why a Muslim man can marry a Christian/Jewish woman but the Muslim woman can’t as she must marry a Muslim man). Also this particular couple I am referring to have never did Islamic nikah either as he doesn’t see its relevance so ended up having a big do wedding party flying friends abroad then plenty of after parties- buying a house together and having kids. Never once do these couple have any interest in religion and choose to live a western life. So this type of marriage isn’t blessed without any type of faith- compared to yours where the kids at least will be raised Muslim

CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER, YOU'VE GOT YOURSELF A GOOD WOMAN MASHALLAH AND SHE'S VERY COMPROMISING AND UNDERSTANDING MASHALLAH,, GOOD FOR YOU BROTHER, AS A BRITISH BORN MUSLIM I THINK IT'S GREAT AND WE NEED GOOD PEOPLE TO SHOW, THAT US MUSLIMS ARE TOLERANT AND OPEN TO COMPROMISE, AND ISLAM IS A RELIGION THAT WORKS, EVEN IN THE WEST AND WE ARE NOT SOME MIDDLE EASTERN RELIGION, THAT IS SOME MEDIEVAL IDEOLOGY OR RELIGION OF YESTERYEAR & WE ARE TAUGHT TO OBEY THE LAW OF THE LAND, IT'S GOOD TO ASIMULATE AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T GO AGAINST OUR TEACHINGS. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH.

I’m Muslim and I also married a White female. Like yourselves we also had these open and honest conversations and agreements on how we will live, how our children will be raised etc. But once our daughter was born, emotions came into play particularly from the mother. Islam is uncompromising, it’s God’s Law and while there were aspects of the faith she was accepting of, seeing the faith being implemented in all its glory became a huge source of burden for her. We regularly fought and in the end we divorced. My daughter is now 17 and while she identifies as Muslim I would class her as a liberal Muslim. While her mother is happy as to how her daughter is growing, as a Muslim it saddens me that my daughter is not deeply rooted in the faith. Like yourself I have also become closer to my faith over the years and while you may think you won’t end up like my ex-wife and I it inevitably will happen unless one party completely lets go of their way of life. Wishing you all the best for the future.

I was in a similar situation. We had honest conversations. But at times she would say things which could be very disrespectful to Islam, and she wasnt very compromising, I allowed it because she was new and she had interest in islam. Just before the wedding she said one day like I don't want my kids to go mosque all the time, or eat Halal all the time as it is a struggle. Once I heard those words I didn't even bother digging any deeper. The knock on the doors were too much and the answer was obvious. I prayed just before I went to see her that day and something in my heart changed. I knew if it's like this now imagine when we are married with children. Emotions change, and people change their minds. I left her and even though it was one of the hardest things we had to do, I had to leave for the sake of Islam, or I would have also lost my faith or become a Muslim who doesn't really follow anything it says. I would have lost my identity. With Islam you will be tested, which one of you who is truthful. I'm married now to a Muslim women. I don't have to struggle to explain these things anymore, I don't have to carry that burden. My advice is let them come to Islam on their own...not for someone. It has to be for Allah, otherwise it will fail. Think of your children, if you really believe Islam is the truth then how can you allow your children to go off the path?

Assalamualikum both; for me, it doesn't matter where we come from, or what color. It matters if he or she is a good person, honest, caring about each other, and most of all he or she supports bad times. If the person does not support bad times then he or she does not call a good partner, good times anyone come.

This is why it’s best to stick with your own cultural background and religious obligations. It’s clear, regardless of the other persons acceptance (which is a brilliant quality) when you do have children it’s going to be extremely difficult to bring them up in an Islamic background.

Dont know but why people in the comments section saying they converted(reverted) to islam cause his BF is muslim .....cause personally speaking religion is not a social media site that if I am practicing islam you should do that too... Religion is a guide to moral and spiritual happiness or peace... So if you are a cristian and buddhist or hindu it should not bother the other person cause its your belief system and your culture also( to explain this south asian and middle east muslims are totally different, and the way South asian muslim practice islam also different) so if you converting to islam with your south asian bf its not only you change your religion but your identity. Of you follow correctly converts are not converting their religion but culture as well so how you can say you are embracing each other by changing religion is a mystery to me. If I have a relationship with a person of different religion I dont think I will say her that convert to my religion cause cause I love the person, her religion and her belief nothing to do with my love for her...

If he was practicing then he wouldn be intermingling with women. So the problem in marrying really is that his future approaches, he might like to make towards deeper practice of his Deen, will be blocked by the prospect of growing away from his secular wife or having to swallow his desire to raise his religious standards. Really it's the same problem all secular Muslims face. Learn Deen first THEN marry. I remember wanting tattoos in jahiliyya but I put that off because I knew I might be religious later in life. A wife is much more serious.
