Not so much "went with" as thats what inspired him to make the film in the first place. It was an homage or spoof of the films he grew up with. Thats the only reason this works. Had it been a little more generic or mainstream it would have been just another bad movie.

Yeah that always bothered me too. But... so goes the ridiculousness of bringing Sherman tanks for up close and personal defense purposes. The only purpose is to move military personnel in the background of War theater, and wreak their defensive damage from far away. It was a wonderfully absurd movie, with wonderfully absurd visuals!

@@geofflepper3207 Fail Safe had a downer of an ending which may have contributed to the lack of commercial success. Worth a watch though for the tension that plays out. I love how the US army in this movie are wearing some old school uniforms and gear like in the Vietnam war or world war 2. (Considering that this movie is considered as some sort of spoof on the 50s alien invasion films and the fact that this film is based on trading carts of the 1960s which are far more brutal and more horrifying than the film itself, I have to give this one a pass because you know it’s a comedy/spoof and a well made one at that)
@willpickering3873

That was Tim Burton’s way of paying homage to 1950s alien invasion movies like Earth vs The Flying Saucers, by depicting a U.S. military still stuck with uniforms and weapons from that decade.
