Mars Insight - Digging Into The Martian Interior

Mars Insight is landing today, hopefully in the same number of pieces the engineers designed!
Mars Insight is a lander rather than a rover because its two main experiments are supposed to stay in one place and will take months to collect the data on the Martian interior that planetologists have been unable to get from previous missions.

@laju
@laju 5 жыл бұрын
Apparently it isn't a reentry, if you are using the correct terminology. According to NASA, the proper term is "entry, descent, and landing, or EDL." Reentry means that vehicle is returning to the same body it was launched from.

@CockatooDude
@CockatooDude 5 жыл бұрын
It's not that hard to do. If you've ever seen one of those old massive flatscreen TVs from the early 2000's, they have a lens in them to even out the backlight which is completely flat but acts as a lens. I assume they used similar technology to that for these antennae.

Question: Are they going to send down the very seismically noisy mole before or after they start collecting data from the Areophone?
@scottmanley
@scottmanley 5 жыл бұрын
First thing they're going to do is scan the area and model it in the mars simulator lab. So they can figure out ideal place to put the gizmos. After that, the seismometer and the mole will have to coexist until the mole is dug as deep as it'll go.
