Mars - Life on the Red Planet? | DW Documentary

In February 2021, the robot "Perseverance" landed successfully on Mars. However, this success was never a given. The film shows the difficult work involved in developing the robot, right up to its successful landing.
The new robot NASA sent to Mars is called "Perseverance". Its mission? To search for evidence of past life on the Red Planet - an important and ambitious endeavor. It took years to design the space probe and its small helicopter drone, called "Ingenuity". This documentary follows the rover's development, right up to its landing in the Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.
The mission proved to be a complete success: the robot landed safely and all the instruments on board functioned smoothly. As a result, "Perseverance" was able to deliver high-resolution images of Mars. But getting there was an arduous journey for all involved.
On site, "Perseverance" takes samples from the crater, which scientists believe was once a river delta. Geological traces of past life - so-called biosignatures - could be hidden in the rock. Eventually, these samples will be brought back to Earth for analysis. Among other things, they could provide insights into possible life on Mars.
The four-pound mini-helicopter "Ingenuity", which traveled in the belly of the rover, is now carrying out a series of test flights. These are the first of their kind to be undertaken on another planet. Another task of "Perseverance" is to test an innovative technology for extracting oxygen from the atmosphere. It is hoped that the gas can be used as fuel -- or to supply oxygen for future manned flights to Mars.

Naive dreaming... The average human is not especially intelligent, and gets himself into all kinds of trouble. Just a few of us are intelligent and creative enough to push human evolution, while the rest of us are just "monkeys with nukes", lol! Life evolve through random mutations, and without natural enemies, we are kinda like a bacteria growing without restraints, so even the bad mutations will flourish. Neanderthals had natural enemies and other challenges that worked as a filter on their evolution, and the smartest ones could create better tools and weapons that gave them a higher chance at surviving than the rest. Humans became so successful that we no longer have such filters on our evolution, and as a lot of us (maybe especially in the western world) choose mates based on how they look and how nice they are to us, intelligence is a pretty small part of the filter that shapes human evolution. Intelligent people probably prefer to start a family with at least reasonably intelligent people, so they can enjoy meaningful conversations together. The not so intelligent people would not understand the priorities and interests of the smart people - and would probably prefer to be with a person of similar intelligence as themselves. As both the smart and stupid people get kids with random mutations, 50% of the kids who have smart parents get the potential to become even smarter than their parents, and 50% of the kids with less intelligent parents have an even smaller potential for intelligence. If this continues without anyone taking measures to push evolution in a good direction (maybe in the form of tax cuts for smart people who have kids, and dumb people who dont have kids), then the problem with people getting themselves into trouble, is just going to get worse and worse. Technically there is little difference between 2 people with bad genes procreating to create a child that will "not thrive", VS genetically engineering a person to have those same genes/weaknesses. People need to start thinking more with their brain instead of letting their emotions tell them what is good or bad. Reality doesnt care what we think or feel, or what our intentions are. All it cares about is that if "X" happens to "Y", then it will result in "Z". No idealism what so ever is involved there. Just cold hard reality - or "truth", if that sounds more "spiritually palatable" 😅

That's true. They also stated that its not possible to put 30t of payload on Mars, when that is the plan with Starship. A few words about SpaceX effort to colonize Mars would have been well placed. Particularly also because of the ethical segment on contamination. If there is life on Mars and we bring organisms from Earth, how will we ever detect Martian life? Cross-contamination would make it extremely difficult if not impossible. The Earth microbes might outcompete and displace the Martian ones, a kind of genocide for the planet. Ofcourse we have our values and ensuring the survival of life from Earth (esp. humans) would probably take priority for most but having a discussion about this before it happens and deciding the level of quarantine we want to maintain before colonization begins would be important.

One thing does not rule out the other. Besides, due to the beauty of evolution, we can't be completely sure if our planet is perfect for life, or if life evolved to be perfect for the planet. Either way, we can at least be sure that our planet is better for life than most out there, and we don't really have the time to evolve to be perfect for another (unless we genetically modify people) so earth certainly should always be considered the crown jewel in our collection no matter how many other worlds we settle.

Bryan Is right. Our population and resources necessary to sustain it will be critical in the next 100 years. Man made islands and getting people off the planet are both necessary. If we don't keep it rolling. Our generation and the ones before have to solve problems we and those before caused.
