Is there nothing this fantastic orchestra with their very charismatic conductor cannot do? This was terrific.

Bravo! The bravery to take on this symphony after it was performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and The Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra is admirable. Well done. I'll still advise anyone interested to watch the original performance at the Berlin Philharmonic website... the Blues feeling produced by the Jazz musicians of the Lincoln Center Orchestra is very difficult to match.

I saw Wynton perform this on pbs a while back. I loved it. This was just as enjoyable. I love watching musicians enjoy themselves.

What a fun and enjoyable symphony performed with great virtuosity! It looks like everyone involved that evening had a blast (there seemed to be a smile on someone’s face in almost every shot!) Andrés knocks yet another one out of the park with this incredible orchestra 👍

I've spent all day trying to find music that feels like Gershwin and this is the closest I've come. Sick tunes.

I found this composer once, Don Gillis. When I listened to him, I was surprised how much it sounded like Gershwin. The stride jazz pianist, James P. Johnson, also wrote classical pieces later in his life. They also sound sort of Gershwinish.

Jazz music is black music. Gershwin is white man's music with a black face.

What a fun piece. I imagine the playing techniques must be quite different than what the orchestra is used to using.

One could be hyper-critical and say how very derivative is this music ─ yes, one could say that, and one would be totally missing the point! This is fun music (not meaning to trivialize it), music to sit back and enjoy, music where the highly-talented musicians could let themselves go, carrying the audience with them. Apart from a couple of moments of slightly ragged ensemble, the playing is brilliant; few symphonic players can free up their playing like this. Yet this same orchestra consistently reveals itself to be a magnificent performer of the major serious repertoire. Frankfurt is to be envied for this treasure of an orchestra, supplemented here by their equally-talented Big Band, all under their amazingly versatile conductor.

Wow. Exactly what I'm after. Can someone with the knowledge explain to me how the strings and woodwinds expand on the traditional big bands consisting only of brass? Presumably it is not as simple as doubling the parts, like the addition of flutes and clarinets might double what the Alto and Tenor saxes might be playing? Don't get me wrong, I can hear when there are different sections playing (like woodwinds call and response with strings doing pizzicazo), but I'm just wondering what the mechanics are of complimenting something already written for traditional brass big band ensemble..... I need to study this composer!

Only the conductor seems to dance with the music. Other orchestra members do not seem to fully swing with it, though their virtuosity is remarkable as always.
