@@Jinikiriwarrior Sadly, about 5% of the Hungarian population was deported to Siberia in the following decade (large numbers of ethnic Germans, political dissidents, etc, not to mention the tortures, social, religious and political repression within its borders), so the "liberation" of Budapest was a mixed blessing at best. The population would have far preferred that the allied powers to the West would have gotten to Hungary before the Red Army, but it had already been decided otherwise.

Typical Soviets, invading Hungary in 1956 to put down student demonstrations by force. I celebrated when the USSR fell apart in 1991, thanks to Ronald Reagan forcing them to spend money they didn't have. And now their fleet is sitting at anchor rusting away. They had it coming though.....74 years was enough of comrade Lenin's philosophy. They might stand a chance now if they can get rid of that Communist apparachik, Putin.
