Explaining the original swinging boiler concept designed and prototyped by Sylvester Marsh for the Mount Washington Cog Railway. I did this animation for ‪@ChristheXelent‬ for the episode of his series "Steam locomotives in profile in the USA" covering that railway, please go and show him some patronage as the series is excellently put together.
This commissioned work used on my channel with his permission.

Hi Mr. Karnes. I just wanted to thank you for all that you do, not only preserving history but showing the our next generation and reminding all of us that once you have your mind and heart on something, no matter how difficult it may be that it’s achievable. I just watched the steam engine video and am amazed at how much knowledge you have due to your love for it. I know it touch a lot of people including myself and as I cannot message you directly just wanted to let you know. Thank you for reaching out, I always try to respond. There is a lot of work to do, right now I am in the midst of trying to raise money to build a power plant on some private property that can be used for education.

certainly an interesting find, and might serve uses on other kinds of steam transportation, especially one that would encounter uneven terrain and requires a compact system

I suppose the gravity (weight of the locomotive) kept the cog-rack engaged? How was the brake system solved? Stopper ratchet on the rack can keep it stationary but coming downhill needs to dissipate quite a lot of energy. Engine braking?

I am glad you asked that question. I would undertake three projects; first reconstruct a Metropolitan railway or high output district power plant with reciprocating engines, preferrably salvaged ones as too much history is being destroyed, and operate it for both gainful energy production and education. The second would be create a high speed steam driven semi-planing ship or hydrofoil with the goal being beat at least the speed record of Mosher's quadruple expansion "Arrow" which did 40 knots. The third project would be a small rigid airship driven by steam power, which would actually be the easiest of the three because the cost would be the lowest.

🇧🇷👋📝A.E. Karnes, would you have a project for a Boiler set with a Steam Engine that runs a 15hp Electric Generator? Or could you at least indicate a company that builds or sells this set?

I would love to talk with you and share our passion for oldie tech, I am also a ham radio(not quite licensed yet) CW, I made a straight key and transmitter and all, well, if you want to talk more you can send your email, if not, no problem! Still admire you and your passion for steam

Given the agency and timing, would you have continued to use them, or phased them out as well?

Considering that a swinging boiler can be a recipe for harmonic rocking and verticals can operate at extremely severe angles, I'd have gone rigid mounting also.

Alex, what would you do with unlimited funding? Or better yet is there a project you’ve been yearning for and haven’t been able to start?

I am glad you asked that question. I would undertake three projects: The first being to reconstruct a Metropolitan power plant with reciprocating engines, preferrably salvaged ones as too much history is being destroyed, and either marry it to an electric railway on private property or connect it to the power grid and generate, for the purpose of education. Because of the frankly facistic regulatory oversight from the Federal Energy Regulation Commission, I would probably do the former, to teach people the working of a large power plant, grid and feeder system. The second would be to create and test a high speed steam driven semi-planing cruiser launch or hydrofoil and see if I could at least beat Mosher's quadruple expansion "Arrow" which achieved 40 knots in 1901. The third project would be a small Rigid airship about one third to half the size of LZ120, driven by lightweight steam power, mostly as an adventure craft. This one would actually be the easiest to achieve because the cost and build effort would be the lowest and the power plant would be approximately the same as the high speed ship save the condensing method.
