It is of course impossible to justify the placement of the Cross Bronx Expressway. However, remember 2 things: 1 Ever since the George Washington Bridge went up in the 1920s there were plans for such a road-well before Moses came to office. 2. Prior to the Cross Bronx, trucks came across the G.W. and spend most of the day in local traffic trying to navigate through The Bronx; Those trucks were generally not even delivering to NYC or Long Island but going up to New England.

The problem was not that the CBE had to be built, but the callous inhumanity it took to build it. Workarounds would’ve cost money. Couldn’t have that. Screw the people. Do it cheaper. Now look. It’s the least successful highway in America. Wins most crowded every year for decades.

The problem was not that they did it but the way they did it they decided to cut cost by disinfecting everyone that lives there and it’s most of the people who live there poor or minorities they just went ahead with out consenting, those things, though if they try to widen it or fix it, it’s just constant traffic and constant delay. If they never build it, there would’ve been semi trucks in the streets of New York.

This was and is a terrible road but with the GWB right where it is where else would it go? To get to New England and Long Island from New Jersey and points west and south there is no other alternative except to go around via 287 and 278, both of which didn't exist at the time.

Well they could of just connect it to the i95 and deegan. And build more transit projects in the tri state, since its mostly local people that use highways. More options means less people drive.

A bridge over LI sound was proposed. The Seaford oyster bay expressway was supposed to cross the sound into Rye NY but was shot down by the federal government after they were pressured by local communities that would have been negatively impacted by the expressway and bridge. A tunnel was also proposed but was deemed too expensive. Today the Seaford oyster bay expressway abruptly ends at Jericho Turnpike. But you can still see a 2 or 3 hundred foot finished section as you exit.

I started reading Caro's book from "One Mile" chapter (where this project analized) and find is the most boring of all the book: full of very subjective opinions, not compelling at all to me as a reader. I was very tempted to stop reading The Power Broker but I tried from other point and find is a really good book indeed, very entertaining and well written.

people always complaining about robert moses and the highway system in n.y.c. these same people would be crying even louder about the traffic congestion in n.y.c without all of these expressways and parkways. it's the big city. don't like it then move to a little country town witha population of a few thousand people

I have seen many different accounts of the construction of this highway and how it “ruined” a Bronx community. Each time, the producer fails to explain the bigger picture of this project. This is not just The Cross Bronx Expressway, this is interstate 95, the most important highway up the entire East Coast of the United States! This highway needs to pass through New York City at some point on its journey up the coast. Once the George Washington Bridge was completed, the only logical place to put I-95 was across this bridge. Subsequently, after crossing the thin sliver of upper Manhattan, the shortest route up the coast was straight through the Borough of the Bronx. To those scorn Robert Moses for the construction of this project, I suggest you look at a map and come up with a better route for this most important of highways!

@@rockintetster they had a different route proposed about a mile from the cross bronx but moses rejected it to run this shit right up the gut of minority communities. Moses was also head of public housing therefore he basically got to pick where many minorities live.

They had plans for it. The Seaford Oyster bay expressway here on LI was originally designed for a bridge from LI to Rye NY that would have picked up highways into Connecticut. That idea was shot down by the Federal government pressured by local towns that would have been effected. A tunnel was also proposed but again it was shot down for the same reasons. Today the expressway just abruptly ends at Jericho Turnpike in Syosset. But you can see about a 2 or 3 hundred foot finished section as you get off the last exit.

Sure, it would create another set of totally unpassable roads. The traffic it would create would be mind boggling, forget that the materials it would use would never pass through an environmental review. You're smoking crack.
