I toured the world with Kitaro using a JMP-1 /9200 rig from ‘94-‘98. It was great. Never let me down. I sold it soon after however. Can’t say that I miss it, I recently recreated that sound on my axe-fx just for kicks, which sounded great.

I may be wrong but I think Dave used jcm heads for the power section sound which makes sense. I think all my Kemper and Ada mp1 sounds better through the Mesa Roadster power section than the power amp so I guess I have to get an all tube 100w power amp.

@@georgefry8035 I have the first CAB but it should be similar. I go out the normal output of the JMP-1 and use a cab that I like (I bought a cab pack with a Soldano cab with Eminence speakers. If you would go into a power amp and a live cab, you could use the second of the stereo outs of the JMP-1. I also have tried mixing the Two Notes CABs output with the cab sim of the JMP-1. You can get a bit more bite in the sound that way and cut better through a mix.

@@georgefry8035 I use the same gear, you should try the JMP1 effects loop. Use the send output of the JMP1 to the input of the Torpedo, from the Output of the Torpedo you can use stereo effects, pedals or stereo multifx, from the multifx outputs to the L and R return of the JMP1. Then you must set the effects loop level at max (12) it works as a parallel loop, then adjust the dry/wet mix in your multifx configuration in order to have a nice balance between your JMP1 guitar tone and the fxs and voilá, you hace a stereo setup with a cool power amp+cab emulation in stereo from a Torpedo CAB which is mono. ;) It sounds amazing with headphones (JMP1 phones output) or using stereo monitors.

People always cite Maiden, Priest, and Def Leppard when talking about the JMP-1. But it also was really big with alternative/industrial bands. NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Ministry, Filter, and Deftones to name a few. Also the clean sounds on the JMP-1 are very usable. People act like they aren't and it's just not the case. OD1 channel greatly benefits from pushing it with a boost.

I run an ESP EC-1000 with an EMG-85 in the bridge into a Boss GT Pro effects unit, with a JMP-1 patched into one of the loops, and the output of the GT Pro into a 3U 50/50 power amp. The 50/50 got a full revalve and service at Marshall last summer, and the JMP-1 got one about 8 years ago now. They've never let me down, and I now have the 50/50 mounted in a 3U rack unit with luggage handle and wheels, with the GT Pro and JMP-1 in a second identical rack unit. Easy to stack and connect together, and run the output of the 50/50 into a JCM800 Bass Series 4x12 base cab. I like having the spare power amp in the 50/50, in case I was to have an output valve failure on tour someplace. We play Motorhead/Zeke/ACDC-style fast paced stuff, and I often get positive comments on how the thing sounds (although some venue sound guys don't like how loud it is... predictably). I still have a modded JCM800 2203 and a now retired JCM2000 DSL50 (too many output transformer and output stage issues to be reliable), but the JMP-1 and 50/50 combo has been my setup for almost 20 years now. I'll never part with it!

I love the Marshall JMP-1. The great thing about them is they can quickly go from meh to amazing. When I first got one I wasn't that impressed but once I started tweaking it and even adding a third party EQ it just opened up. Adding the right amount of low end and high cut can balance out the treble and fizz it is known for.

A classic! OD 2 could have even a little more gain and sometimes I wished to have even 0.5 steps for the controls, but apart from this an excellent, flexible. robust and reliable tool. Does not necessarily need a power amp to sound good, but you can use one of course. My favorite at the moment is one with a pair of KT77's. But alone with a good cab IR behind it can sound great.

The JMP-1 doesn’t HAVE to sound “‘80’s”. “It’s of an era” is a load of crap. Sure, it came out in ‘92...but that doesn’t mean it can’t sound like anything else. When was the JMP Plexi released? I doubt it’s only “relevant” for late ‘60’s covers as people are still using them for all kinds of stuff.....or a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Glossing over a couple presets while patched into an interface for 10 minutes is NOT a valid review. Spend a while plugged into an amp ac cab after dialing in mid-gain crunch with some delay or a touch of Reverb and THEN tell me “meh....it’s of an era”. The Two Rock tone snobbery on display here is ridiculous....🙄

Great demo of a cool (and now vintage-ish?) Marshall product. I had a JMP-1 back in the 90's. I liked hearing other people play through it, but somehow it didn't quite work for me. Tried the 9001 preamp too. I liked that a bit better, but what I soon realized was that I could get more satisfying sounds running a humble little Boss SD-1 into my JCM800 2203. Less fizz, more grunt. Simpler was better, for me at least. Some very clever engineering went into those Marshall rack preamps, so hats off in any case.

I feel many folks today haven't notice that units such as JMP1, MP1 and Triaxis are just genuine high-end amp tones in rack formats. We have cutting edge (for 2024) modelers/capture boxes which provide great digital representation of classic amp tones, which is awesome. In the other hand considering such racks like outdated technology sounds as far fetched as considering amps outdated, as those racks haven been used into remarkable records for decades, records whose tones are still top notch and ultimate reference even for pros. Obviously the current digital gear sounds so good and is much more convenient than carry rack units and/or amps, but tube based racks still produce tone and feel which accurately represent amp experience. Amazing stuff such as Synergy is to me like glorified modern versions of those rack units.

If the JMP1 had been released around 1986, the era of the Lee Jackson, the ADA and other preamps it would have been absolutely huge. I've been playing punk and metal shows for 15 years with mine and I have my JMP-1 paired with a Marshall 9200 - It's so damn heavy... but I'm talking about physical weight. It's too damn heavy to carry around! I'M IN MY 40's NOW!!!

I did have a JMP1 with JFX 1 and 9100. I sold it for a Rocktron voodoo Valve which I prefered. These days Im a Fractal man - have been since 2007, though I still keep a valve amp around (PT15 currently). Iron Maiden have used JMPs for ages - though this last tour they have finally swapped it out for the Fractal Axe-FX3 (using the JMP model ......). Cant really have a better advert for the old JMP though.

In the 9000 series, the 9001 was the three valve/three channel preamp (I have one😊) and the 9004 was the solid state two channel preamp.

The 9004 was more user friendly and still very similar to Rocktrons Widowmaker. When paired with a Quadraverb or Digitech IPS units it got the job done 👍

Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top used these live for years too (see rig rundowns on youtube). I still have one I bought when they first came out, it was a toss up between this and the Mesa V-Twin rack but the Mesa just didn't sound good to me at all. That said I don't think the JMP-1 is that good either really and I haven't used it much. Don't be fooled by the presence of valves, it is pretty much solid state - not that that is a bad thing, just making that clear. As mentioned here, they are very much of their era.

I had one in the early 90's. Sold it after about 5 years use and then bought another about 10 years ago. Couldn't get on with it second time around tbh.

Both the Reverend Billy Gibbons and the late Dusty Hill use/used these in their live rigs. I've never had the pleasure...the battle of the guy who makes anything sound good vs user error.

The jmp, like the a/da mp1 was really only known for one sound. The rest were lackluster... in some cases like white lion and skid row, they used one specific preset.
