Thanks for sharing. What a remarkable match. Greenidge's 214* is legendary but I hadn't realized what an incredible performance by Botham. Fine innings by Fowler and Lamb. Proper cricket. Props to Larry Gomes - takes some kind of talent to bat at #4 for this team.

@@mrkipling2201 Not when you're looking at the greatest. He could be pretty wayward. Botham is 19th on the list of highest wicket-takers. Only 2 on that list of 19 have a higher economy and only 1 (of the non-spinners) has a higher average. When this discussion is around The Greats - Botham was not particularly accurate

Gower was slaughtered by the press for the declaration. But he really couldn't be faulted: it was just sublime Greenidge, batting like a man possessed, who was responsible for the result. Until the time Greenidge walked into bat for the second time, England had made a match of it.

Nice to see how competitive England were against this West Indies team -in some tests at least. Gower's declaration was brave and not seen as reckless at the time, just as an honest attempt to win a test match. Greenidge and Gomes showed how 4th innings batting was done. Also a reminder that Ian Botham had a cracking series in 1984, huge wickets and I think 4 fifties, at least as good as 1981 but against a far better team against whom, one great player on fire could not turn the tide, hard though he did try.
