I've been using Marshall Town carbon steel trowels for over 40 years. Nothing against stainless trowels apart from they feel like your using a shovel compared to carbon and you can achieve a much better finish with a carbon.

Which Carbon steel trowel would you say is the best all rounder? Nella giveaway trowel or the Marshalltown 13" Cement or 14" plastering trowel? Thanks

I have a 15 year old + Tyzack 11" carbon and s/s version. Always thought carbon was inferior ( based on price) which is why I always used it for bonding/compound and s/s for finishing (DIYer ) but based in yours and Blain Grey's reviews , couple plastering jobs need to do so splashed out on 3 new trowels . MT C/S permashape 14", Rafina Superflex 2 14" & Rafina Plaziflex 14" & Speedskim, which I'm hoping with tips I've got from you and Blain I'll get some decent results ( pity about Tyzack as when I did a 10 week plastering course 15+ years ago everyone seemed to be using Tyzack , but since they started manufacturing in China Quality gone out of the window
@AlexMorleyPlastering2 жыл бұрын
Nice comment, thanks for your thoughts. There is no doubt tyzack were amazing back in the day. Not now. Carbon Steel is cheaper due to the maintenance. But the finish you get on multi is far superior to a SS and a Flex when broken in and used at the proper time. Generally it’s the only trowel we use throughout the whole set. Just don’t let excessive rust build up on the Underside as you will need to do S&C render to get rid of it.

The 14” cement is superb. We had a plasterer with us today trying it out. He was so impressed he also bought one today. Tbh we have done nothing with it. (Mainly laziness.) really impressed with the finish it gets out the box.

Nice review, Alex! Never tried a timber handle - does they need sanding/oiling or anything, or is it good to go?
@AlexMorleyPlastering3 жыл бұрын
We usually give it a light sand before use with some 180. Other than that, nothing. We just occasionally sand it if we get plaster on it. Comes up new. 🤌👌

Hi Alex are you still favouring the 13”, I’m about to bite the bullet and buy a carbon but I want to get it sharp enough to work straight through and bin the flex, fed up of nicking it on beads, would you still recommend 13” for all stages or go to 14”
@AlexMorleyPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Definitely the 13”. Breaks in faster. Much better for even pressure. The MT one in this video is very nice. Just like a permashape SS. Just Carbon. Lovely bend on it. I wish I could have got the cement trowel in 13” as it’s nicer to use, but they didn’t have it unfortunately.
@Nofixedabode8593 жыл бұрын
Thx Alex do you prefer the m/t 13” to the Nela 13” then at this stage, I’m undecided you choose for me lol
@AlexMorleyPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Of the 13” I prefer the Nela. Louie prefers the MT. It’s a lot lighter. But the stiffer MT (14” cement) is nicer IMO
@Nofixedabode8593 жыл бұрын
Thx Alex I think the 13” m/t is xlite only in carbon from what I can find so maybe that’s why not as stiff as 14” so think I’ll go for nela, thx buddy
@MrProbarrage3 жыл бұрын
@@Nofixedabode859 reason the nela is stiffer and the 14 inch mt is because they are 1/4 of an inch narrower less metal either side of the shank

Hi Alex, I had my van stolen and all tools etc. now buying new everything. Unfortunately I don’t plaster every day or even every week, so carbon I won’t be getting. But what would you recommend trowel wise? I doubt I’ll get a permashape again as it took forever to get good
@jamescootes19763 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex I use a 9 year old 13; SS MT it’s broken in lovely but over the years due to sanding nicks out it’s not square anymore so I want your opinion am I better of trying to make it square again or just buy a new 13 MT
@AlexMorleyPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Hi James Does it still leave a nice finish in the shame it is in? If so I would leave it. Trowels only deform due to the pressure being applied to it. Generally we only re straighten flexible trowels. SS trowels take too long to break back in.

Hello just wondered if you had any advise I've brought a marshalltown permashape carbon it was going well for the 1st month but now it seems to being leaving ripple looking marks in the walls but when I swipe my hand across its completely flat any reason why?

@@AlexMorleyPlastering I would probaly say tiger marks but like I say when you touch the wall it's prestine I don't know weather the carbon isn't sharp enough or what
@AlexMorleyPlastering2 жыл бұрын
Pretty common with a newer trowel tbh. You might just slightly need to adjust your timing a bit. Compress the plaster after the initial flatten on the second coat a little earlier, and wait a little longer for the 1st wet trowel.

They’re carbon steel. They will rust but if dried and oiled after use (takes 30 seconds) the rust will never ruin them and is minimal. Just bought the 13 inch trowel he’s talking about and it’s brilliant compared to the permashape

What oil would you put on them and how do you get the oil off for when you use them
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot2 жыл бұрын
@@83maller mate all I did when I bought it was as Alex said, left it and my carbon midget trowel on distilled vinegar for a few days, since then after using I’ve been drying and using wd40 on them, but I’ll be honest, I’m already getting lazy and not bothering and the rust is literally nothing. Use it all the way through prior to a marshalltown flexi and then the Refina plastic. Up until Friday I was getting loads of build up on the back, but today I did a big ceiling and it was minimal so must be getting a curve on it now. Honestly bar the mt flexi, it’s the nicest trowel I’ve ever used
