Hard to believe Marshal Tucker is not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Toy Caldwell never recognized as one of the greats when it came to playing that electric guitar. Not many southern rock bands had a flute player n saxophone player. Robbed of never being recognized for their greatness n what they added to southern rock. To us old timers they made great music. Still loving it in 2020.

Well said, friend. Enjoying in 2022. Knew Toy because of horses. I'm an older musician/vocalist and there's nothing close to these boys, Charlie Daniels, Skynyrd and the Southern Rock bands of the day. Knew so many of those that have gone on. I miss my buddies.

I feel almost like I'm watching something too personal, the Toy Caldwell guitar solos. God Bless you Toy. I didn't know you and I was way too young to appreciate your work. I missed being mature by about 10 years. I can only hope I would have appreciated your music, your musical soul if I had been younger. As it is I have most of the MTB live recordings that exist and this live video as well. Love these guys, sax and flute included.

I just watched a video of MTB doing Ramblin from 1973 and the closeup of Toy's picking is great. Here's the thing though - I don't have the physical ability to move my thumb or even a pick that fast now. He was in his 20's! I was pretty fast in my 20's but I don't think I could have done that. Lucky we have the recordings esp on Where We All Belong!

Listen to the Tucker Boys everyday since ‘71…was fortunate enough to have had Tommy tell Joe McConnell their road Mgr. To out me on their permanent guest list…on stage at many shows and man that sound comin’ from 6 different directions an meeting in the middle of the stage was mind boggling..wore creased Levi’s over whatever shined up cowboy boots I had on, with a Tucked in cowboy shirt and wide belt with a Tucker belt buckle and a summer straw or winter XXX beaver felt winter hat bearing The Tucker Twist and at some night shows there would be a Tucker moon. Think they influence my life much…how I met the band was incredible…in ‘73 Toy and George had gotten out of the Limo and where walking into the venue together! I was standing at a closed off gate with security standing watch… I hollered “George McCorkle, fastest rhythm guitar player alive.” Toy elbowed George and said “he listens, get on in here boy!” The guard let me pass and they both clapped me on my shoulders and called Tommy over…told him the story and he asked my name he said “Steve we’re all brothers in this band..” walkin’ me into the backstage band room and he said “hey y’all this Is our brother Steve!” “Hey Bother Steve they all said!” He asked how many passes I needed and I had the wife and another couple with…” is 4 too many?” I asked. They gave me 4 and I pith mine on my Levi’s and went out to get the others….when you get back in there’s drinks and eats over there on them tables, you’re welcome to anything there and don’t be shy” that started a good relationship with the band, they were very personable and nobody had an ego!!

When i was in college, they were probably one of our favorite bands., considering I went to school in a rural area in Wisc.Beisdes admiring Toy Caldwell's guitar playing and muscianship, we all emulated the way he styled his cowbay hat, haha. The farther down you could bend that brim, the better, especially if you were wearing an illegal smile.

Yep! They're from Spartanburg SC! Just a couple of hours north of my hometown! I saw them for the first time at Charlie B's Farm rock festival, maybe 1971 or maybe 72. Great weekend of lots of local bands and a few bands who were sort of known around the southeast. I remember Charlie Daniels Band was there too! First time I had seen him too! WAY before the Devil Went Down to Georgia! That was a great weekend when I was 16! I'll never forget that weekend! I was supposed to be home that Saturday night at midnight. Didn't get home till late Sunday afternoon! Was grounded for a week or so! But it was worth it!

I live less than a mile from Charlie B's! They have tried to revive it in recent years and have had annual concerts that have had decent local attendance, but nothing like what it was back in the 1970's! I knew these guys personally from the early days when they were still The Toy Factory. As great as they still were here, and as great a player as Franklin Wilkie was, and still is, there was a definite emptiness there after Tommy died. Then when Toy left to go on his own things really suffered. Doug has tried to keep it going and I have been to a couple of recent shows, but I probably won't go back. It just isn't the same. I do hope they are eventually inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame!!!!

This brings back memories. My band was on the road playing in Durham, NC. in June 1975 and we had a Sunday off so the guitar player and I made the 3 1/2 hour drive to Columbia, SC. to see Marshall Tucker at the Carolina Coliseum. They were just coming off an extended tour and said they were glad to be home. They put on a great show. Also on the bill were Lynyrd Skynyrd and blues man John Hammond. One of the best concerts I've seen.

Who were you playing with? I knew these guys from their early days as The Toy Factory. I had the opportunity to jam with a couple of them at Big Daddy's in Greenville, SC in 1975-76. Some of my close friends were the house band there (Mickey Fowler and the Variations). They were also close friends with Toy. The bass player, Tony Heatherly, became Toy's bass player when he left MTB and went out on his own. Anyway, Toy came over from Spartanburg (Pauline) one night along with Charlie Daniels. He brought his pedal steel. It was a couple weeks before my band went on tour for the first time in 1975. The drummer, let me sit in on The Orange Blossom Special! Their fiddle player, Jim Rumsey, and Charlie Daniels played "dueling fiddles"!!! It was definitely a night to remember!

Marshall Tucker and Charlie Daniels(before he sold out)was my music in the mid 70's with some GD and NRPS, thrown in. Saw them all together in 77', except CD and to this day, it was the best show I've ever seen and I've been to more than a few in my life. 24hrs at a time is the story of my life. RIP, Tommy and Toy, 2 brothers that knew how to play and party, God bless.

One of the best bands of there time Toy was indeed as good as any one else and better than most. I saw them in there prime 1974-75-76. They were being opened by the Charlie Daniels band and they both were on stage at the same time and blue smoke covered the venue. Then later on when they still had a good lead guitar player in the 90's and Doug had his great voice. Thanks for all the good music.

one of the most unique bands in modern "rock" music. Much like the Brothers MTB mixed rock, blues, country and jazz into their own sound. These guys were extremely popular in DC metro area in the mid-70s......very underrated. Oh yeah, I prefer Toy singing This Old Cowboy over Doug.

My treated rock n’ roll moment!
