This is why tier lists are kinda meaningless, imo. People still believe that a character like ZSS is top tier just because of one single player does well with her, meanwhile there are players like MKLeo that does well with Byleth or Zackray that does well with Pit but people still call those characters mid-tiers. People often put characters too high and then say stuff like "if you play this character perfectly and don't commit any single mistake, you can do very well" but isn't that true for almost every character?

I’ve always thought the “just play well” argument was especially stupid. You can play DK perfectly and still lose because he’s so big and heavy your right choices can still be wrong because there’s actually nothing you can do in certain situations. Mechanics like parrying, shield pokes, frame 1 escapes, hurtbox shifting, spacing, RNG moves, stat differences and hitbox extensions are all mechanics that make it impossible to “play perfectly and win”

Pre nerf, we at least had Choco, Shky, and especially Kuro (fun fact, Kuro is the lowest ever seed to win a major in Ult). Now, though, we only really have Marss and Doorstop that I can think of, and Doorstop is a co main.

I haven't seem Doorstop play in so long, but last time I checked it felt like he still was laggin behind Marss, on edge guards and ledge traps specially. Marss has been playing ZSS on top level for so long it feels none is ever gonna come close

On the Light Fox thing, when you watch some other Fox, like a clip from a local or in a compilation, they look like they're playing a slower version of the character than Light, other Foxes are playing Brawl Fox while Light is playing Ultimate Fox, it's bizarre that there's such a disparity between a good Fox and a Light Fox, it genuinely doesn't look like the same character. This also applies to Marrs ZSS, they just look like they're playing better versions of the character than everyone else. With other top players you can see their decision making is what gaps them from a local tournament player but they don't look like they're playing better versions of the character, your local twitter clip Joker is playing the same character as MKLeo, you can see that but there's a Leo diff in the decision making but they're using the same combos and setups as Leo, Leo is just doing it at better times.

One word answer: YES Few words answer: IT IS ALWAYS TRUE In early ultimate, I never thought ZSS is anywhere near the top tier material. After she received the nerfs in Pyra&Mythra DLC patch, it had no doubt that ZSS confirmed as a mid tier unit, and may potentially reached to the low tier criteria in future. For US representations, Doorstop and Shoe did great in certain moments, but obviously nowhere near to the Marss level; JAPAN on the other hand……Welp, after the trio of great Japan ZSS not active anymore (Choco, Kuro, Shky), the remaining ZSS players in current (Iba, Meido, Shion) weren’t enough to reach their height and just continued to struggle in qualifying the pools round as usual.

when talking about corrin you said "when you're playing against corrin, you play corrin's game" 4:04. To me that sounds like something you would say about steve, fox or sonic. I think Vars said something about top tier character like : a top tier is defined by the fact that you have to play their game, f.e. ganon, bad character, you just mash on him fast moves and you'll prob be fine. falcon, you camp him and spam projectiles. What's the plan about steve ? avoid getting true combo 0 to 95? While keeping in mind bair anvil minecart grab tnt wall up smash and other mc shenaticans ? There is no clear "do that and you'll be fine" and I think the argument can be made about corrin to some lesser extend.

This is why I think Corrin is top tier, at least top 15 at this rate. Her options are so insane that she forces most players to play HER game. Whenever I play anyone else I get upset when I realize everyone gets to make a game that I must play. When I play Corrin I see that I can be the one designing the game of most sets and that's how I win and make top 8s. I can't see Roy or Lucina doing the same thing as Corrin. They always have to play the game of their opponent. Meanwhile, Corrin, Aegis, and Cloud all force the opponent to play their game. Corrin is a top 3 swordie but I think she is the best one due to how much more reward she gets from winning neutral in comparison to Cloud, while also having a much more consistent and reliable recovery than both Aegis and Cloud. There's a reason why Sparg0 doesn't think Cloud is solo viable yet Corrin is. That alone puts Corrin above Cloud IMHO. I think what puts Corrin above Aegis is her consistency and ease of play. We have 5-6 different players at the top that made noise with Corrin as either a solo main or as a secondary. Aegis is the most played swordie in the entire game of comp smash and yet does not have as many highs as Corrin... and now she is reduced to a secondary or pocket pick in most players' character rosters. On paper, Aegis is better, but us humans suck so we need a consistent recovery option and better disadvantage state which Corrin has. Like Marss said, it's hard for Shadic, a good Corrin, to get upset because of Corrin's nature. Aegis is known to be volatile at higher levels of play and that's why she is never solo mained.

the lack of representation in general is the reason why I think the tierlists posted are just not accurate. they fail to account for too many things. the top tiers currently just represent the units with the modt consistent results this meta is defined entirely by how accessable cheese tools are and survivability/stall tools are to the character.

I’ve gotten into so many arguments with people that way over value/ estimate Corrin. I’ve heard that she’s top 15, 10, the best swordie, etc, etc. I think Corrin is cemented in the 15-25 range, but happens to have a lot of meta relevant matchups + a top 20 player so they’re a bit over hyped.

Bottom of high tier for sure. God tier nuetral but as time has gone on the increase of cheese characters and sword users have just tanked zss stonks. Also ultimate is just a more of a cheese based game than S4. S4 was far more nuetral based and therefore zss thrived. Ult has too much cheese and disjoint users for zss to thrive. Zss requires an ungodly level of mix to beat top tiers at the highest level.
