Austrian artist Martha Jungwirth's first solo exhibition in Seoul, ⟪Looking the Goat in the Eye,⟫ presents new works in oil and watercolor. Her unique painting process, which she describes as a "dynamic space" of "action and passion," will be on display, as well as the vast worldview that inspires her.
A pivotal figure in the Austrian art scene for more than six decades, the artist has gained international attention and acclaim in the last 15 years for her vibrant and expressive work. Neither fully figurative nor abstract, her work is based on the world around her and draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including travel, media, mythology, and art history.
The "goat" in the exhibition's title is the devil in the Christian symbol system, which Goya captured in several caricatures and copperplate prints. Jungwirth expands on this theme with her own interpretation of the ambivalence of the goat, which Goya depicted as a threatening and absurd creature. In this exhibition, she evokes the subject, forcing the viewer to confront the instinctive, unbridled creativity that was so feared by those who accused women of witchcraft.
