Dang man, I like how you did this video. more body science. Not just, "see, I'm so slightly, unnoticible doing something to go blisteringly fast" like most videos.
@SB-bq7qs6 жыл бұрын
Hey Martin, you know what I'm loving about your videos? You are realistic!!! I've seen so many videos about how to improve double bass but they put out numbers like start at 160bpm or 180bpm and go from there. Often times this just made me feel worse because I couldn't even do the starting speeds of what these instructors were telling me. Thank you for making me feel like I'm not such a scrub! Great video! One question though, when does the flat foot tap out? As in how fast do you normally go with this technique before you start incorporating calves/ankles?
@Safestassets5 жыл бұрын
Some drummers use the flat foot technique up to around 200 bpm (or more) but I think Marthyn switches from flat foot to the ankle technique at around 150 (don't quote me on this, though!) I say this because in one of his videos he suggested that you should practice both techniques at 150 and eventually learn to switch between the two techniques without affecting the sound. Give his course a try if you're having problems.

could you do a video about ankle motion? It seems that I cannot grasp it properly neither in fast or slow tempos. It's hard to start practicing without being able to just play this technique at any tempo. And great video as always! I will try practicing flat foot with weights:) thanks!

Hey Marthyn, I have trouble with my hip flexers cramping and feeling tight constantly. When I go to play faster they do not speed up and instead begin to move into a fast twitching motion with little to no control. Any advice would be much appreciated!
@king-manu27584 жыл бұрын
You need to use ankle to go fast. The hip flexor gets burned fast when going fast. You can play until 160bpm approx but after that you need to switch to ankle motion.
@TheDaveholeinone3 жыл бұрын
Do some stretches of the hip flexors. I always am stretching to make sure muscles are loose so that i can perform at my best and to give myself every opportunity to be on top of my drumming.... Blessings to ya!!
@king-manu27583 жыл бұрын
@MarsHolst20 does he play with legs? I find it hard to believe you can play fast with endurance using legs. It would be like playing fast with your arms instead of wrists and fingers.

Thanks for this great tutorial! I tried it out yesterday and went from no control whatsoever to 90 bpm for one minute straight in one session. I don't own ankle weights or dumbbells (yet), but even only doing the exercise without pedals first and then taking it to the drum kit helped a lot. One thing I realized was that, although having been a (hobby) drummer for 27 years, I have not yet developed real control over my legs and feet because I've always mashed various techniques together to "get me through the song". That's why I'm a "fast cat" when it comes to double bass drumming, by the way. ;) When I did the exercise yesterday I felt a lot of strain in my core muscles, my glutes and my posterior thigh muscles, but it did not hurt and gave me a short glance at the control I will have developed once I've mastered the flat-foot technique. Next up will be buying ankle weights and practicing on a daily basis. Keep up the good work!

Great and helpful video! I'm currently playing with ease at 150bpm. What I'd like to know is when to increase the overall tempo of the exercise. Should I for example play in 150bpm for whole week, 30mins every day, in order for my muscles to learn and get used to that tempo and then raise by 10bpm? All in all, the practising routine :)

Hi I'm a beginner and I wanna ask when to use this flat foot technique and when to use the ankle one? A former teacher asked me to raise the whole leg while another teacher ask me to spring the leg up which uses the ankle, and I'm quite confused. Instead of knowing what these techniques mean, could you explain when they are for? I google everywhere and couldnt find the answer, thanks a million if you could help! Xoxo

Do you have any advice to bomb-blast? In slower double bass parts where my hands do only some simple rythm stuff(I guess those are called midtempos or something) I can manage my double bass pretty well but when my hands have to beat every second note with the bass drum I start to mess up...
@drumtechniqueacademy6 жыл бұрын
hey.... find out at which tempo you are able to play a tight bomb-blast with double bass for longer periods of time...then increase the tempo just 2 or 3 bpms and practice at that tempo for long periods of time (at least 10mins) at one point the motion of your feet and hands will get stored to your muscle memory and then it's easy to work your way up the bpm ladder... enjoy :-)

I wonder if this same concept would work with the hands with different size sticks. go as fast as possible with my 5Bs, then switch to some great big marching sticks, then back to 5Bs.

Bretton M I actually do this when rehearsing with my band. If we write something that’s a little challenging on the wrists/arms I switch to heavier sticks while learning the song. It works for me at least :)

There isn't a single proper video on youtube talking about this technique, aside from yours. The ones out there aren't really about the flat foot technique, since the drummers got the concept wrong, even though they think they're using this technique. All of them are using other muscles, like chin and calf, which isn't the case with this technique. I wish you showed in on the pedal as well.

I think that single stroke does not have diffrent techniques. There is only one technique - right technique. And this flat foot... I will not say that it is wrong flat foot, but I say it is wrong technique for single stroke. Because if we do not turn off Hip flexor muscle on slow speed, it will turning on also on medium and fast speed even you do not want it. We should use ONLY ankle musles. From 50 to 300 bpm and only one technique.
