I wore my karate gi to a restaurant (slightly fancier than a diner but not much) once, and to corner shops a few times... but this was when I was a preteen karate student with Dad taking me to those places on the way home from lessons, not wearing it just to show off that I do karate. Also I didn't pick fights with other styles to try and prove mine was better. My approach was - and still is - trying to show my opponent concepts their art doesn't teach, and trying to see things in their moves that I wasn't learning at my dojo. The light kick was originally done by Bruce Lee in a television series. The series was The Green Hornet, Bruce wore a mask and was the Green Hornet's driver. There was going to be a fight scene in a basement or warehouse and Bruce improvised the overhead light kick just as the fight was going to start. I enjoyed the first 2 Ip Man movies more than the follow on. Have you done anything on Sonny Chiba? Remember Bruce Lee's famous quote. "The best style is no style." Once you use a style you confine yourself to it and your opponent will be able to read you. "Be like water" Shape yourself to the task at hand. If the moment requires a haymaker punch then do it. Knowing as much as possible is good. But practice makes perfect and knowing to much will slow down the process of learning the important things. Jeet Kune Do is the basis of what is important to learn first. "Fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks once. Fear the man who has practiced one kick 10000 times" Striking a balance between these two methods is the key to mastering martial arts.
