As an introvert myself, I can relate. I used to do A LOT of hiking in very rural areas by myself, and never even thought about self defense until a few years ago. Fortunately, I never had anything happen, but I'm much more prepared now, mainly with better situational awareness but also a few tools. Being prepared is the best way to prevent being paranoid. Great vid, as always!

Years ago, I was thinking about a somewhat crazy, lone-hiker personal active protection system, but primarily against aggressive animals, such as mountain lions and other large felines that tend to ambush by attacking from behind (although bears and wolves would also have to be taken into consideration), but it would probably also defend against humans sneaking on one's back. It would be designed like a backpack with shock-absorbing spacing and padding on the user-facing side and would then have a replaceable honeycomb-like battery of short tubes - barrels loaded with buckshot/birdshot rounds which would either be triggered manually or automatically by fire control electronics with optical and IR sensors if a potentially dangerous entity would approach too close, say two yards away.

I was an MP in West Germany in the mid '80s, and we were constantly advised to be on alert, both on and off duty, due to threats and actions by the "Red Army Faction" (formerly the Baader Meinhoff Gang), of kidnapping, assault and murder of members of the U.S. Military, as well as attacks on communication towers and other critical infrastructure. I say this not to put myself anywhere near (let alone on) this man's level, but only to point out that I was specifically trained and regularly reminded to maintain situational awareness, and to point out that even MPs and Special Forces members can let their guard down and be caught unawares. Complacency is the biggest threat to situational awareness. Remember that attacks can and do happen everywhere, but can often be avoided simply by noticing suspicious behavior in advance, and taking a few steps out of your way to avoid those acting suspiciously. For the Monday Morning Quarterbacks out there, who want to tear down these instructional and helpful videos based on massive amounts of training and actual real world experience, I would strongly suggest you read "The Man in the Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt, and reconsider your desire to challenge these videos. Otherwise, why not make your own videos, explaining your opinion on these situations, and show us your stuff, slick.

This hits close to home. 2 weeks ago I was hiking in the woods with my dog when 3 men with 3 husky's were coming from my front with their dogs off leash. My Lab is still a puppy and the dogs immediately attacked my dog. I tried picking up my dog and the dogs were biting her feet. I dropped my dog and I ended up kicking the guys dog to protect my puppy. The guy never tried to stop his dogs and just stood there. As soon as I kicked his dog he raised a fist and came at me. I am out numbered 3-1 but I struck him square in the chin and dropped him. The other 2 just picked up their friend who appeared drunk and walked off. This type of thing happens were I live because a lot of city people come to my town to enjoy the outdoors. I always try to avoid conflict but I couldn't this time. I did strike him but I was hoping it would end there. I did have a knife in my waist as long as my firearm. I never once thought I was at the level to pull my firearm but If I ended up having 3 people come at me I would have. My State is NJ so I would have had a huge legal battle. I really enjoy your videos.

I used to alway wonder around in the woods & the creeks by myself not thinking I would see anyone until 1 day I came up on a man that was actually living in the woods. Thank GOD he didn't try anything, but you just never know. I always have carried a gun with me due to the bears & mountain lions in the area just in case. Turns out that this guy was going to my closest neighbor 2 miles away & eating their cat food & drinking the milk they set out for their cats. They caught him on their cameras doing this but he would cover his face with his hand as he knew they had cameras. He never caused anyone any problem in the area but the law did catch him & hauled him away. To me he looked like someone that wasn't all there but he wasn't no dummy either cause he had made his own shelter there in the woods close to the water & was feeding himself in that weird way. Hell for all we knew he could have been some special forces person that knew what to do to survive & just tried to blend in to the terrain.

Is there anything to do if the attacker has a larger blade weapon, e.g., a machette, or a club, a metal pipe/rod, some manual tool, such as a spade, a scythe, a pitchfork, an axe? Watching this soberingly realistic video, it seems to me that being alone in secluded outdoor settings is best to be avoided. And the worst is the immediate shooting from a distance, a frustration reaction due to disappointment with the victim's lack of valuables. So, should there always be some kind of a "treat", even a "decoy" possession on one's person to temporarily distract the attacker and give him some sense of satisfaction, so that they focus on the prospect of spoils and get too close to the victim, so that the latter can then disarm them?

You forgot to shoot him when you took his gun. Make sure you grip the slide so if one is squeezed off it will create a class 3 malfunction, many douchebags wont know how to clear it.... in the event you dont get the firearm from the perp.
