why the hell would you put a 5 minute time limit on Martin Amis?

need to read more...but The Information and London Fields is definitely better than The Green Man and Stanley And The Women and Crash and Junky and The Wild Boys and probably better The Picture Of Dorian Gray

me too, todays scathing review of LA just makes me want me to read it all the more. it talks about his distance from Dickens generosity. characters are loftily looked down on from vocabulary well above their heads. incessant mimicry of prolatarian misprounciation seems to annoy the reviewer. so now we know. MA is at it again. making fun of poor and uneducated people maybe because they are poor and uneducated or rich and stupid. NOT one for the Booker. MA is left wing. oh oh OH the BETRAYAL !!!!

Most writers? I disagree, think about Oscar Wilde, William Burroughs, Lord Byron, J.G. Ballard, Yukio Mishima, Hunter S Thompson, Gore Vidal, Dylan Thomas - the list goes on and on, most writers that are any good tend to look at the world differently and that makes them interesting - Kingsley Amis wasn't dull, he may have seemed the typical old English gent but he was an extremely funny, witty human being

I was more commenting on your saying that writers are dull, I just find many of them very fascinating people. I agree that London Fields is great and that it's better than most on that list except The Picture Of Dorian Gray, which I love, but that's just down to personal preference. It's all subjective. Am really looking forward to Amis' new novel Lionel Asbo - I'll be buying it the day it comes out :)

@KarenMalone What do you mean by "satirise him"? What is your definition of satire?

How easy it is to decontextualize utterances! At least Martin Amis would never confuse satire with parody.

of course Kingsley was critical of Martin...he is nowhere near as good.., and compared with Martin he is like most writers...rather dull

Utter rubbish… KA is infinitely greater as a writer and as a mind. MA is so dull in comparison - quite obviously so, to anyone with a sense of humor.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed 'The Old Devils' by Kingsley and 'Experience' by Martin.

@@SP-ki5gn Amis Junior should have got The Booker price for Experience just like his dad did for The Old Devils . Or for London Fields . Or The Information. Or The Pregnant Widow. Or Inside Story. Marty Amis was always a bit of a lefty. But his writing was always felt to be politically incorrect. All this is a terrible shame . It’s biases like these that lead to the rise of trump , farage, and made things like Brexit possible. The population rightly believe the Establishment has its own daft agenda and will pursue it come what may. No platforming , triggering and our cancel culture are more symptoms of a deep malaise at the heart of our democracy. The back lash is proving to be far far worse than all this liberal left nonsense. Look how the lefties in America enabled a nasty buffoon like trump to become President and possibly to run for office again

Ah, "The writer's life"; "Words are your fuel"; "My theory is that everyone wants to be a writer"; it's about "communing with yourself"; Writing is "a much more physical acitivity than you would think"; it's "...an emotional and physical activity as well as a cerebral one" ... This is one of the great things about Martin Amis: one has merely to quote him verbatim to satirise him.
