Martin classic backpacker travel guitar review (nylon string)

This is my review of Martin classic backpacker travel guitar (nylon string). I am walking the Portuguese Camino and this is my 6th day. I wanted to wait few days so I could give an honest review. This can can be a solution to bring a guitar while you are backpacking. Some people have ukelele but I prefer this one. And with a full-size guitar my hiking would not be possible.

Thanks! I think this review will be very helpful to those in the market for a travel instrument, as long as you aren't flying! Even though this would fit in many overhead spaces it is not going to pass the "basket test" at the gate..at least in Europe.

Yes I flied with Ryenair and I checked this guitar in. Also I think this is more robust then other instruments so it is more difficult to break it. So one more positivity to travel with this:)

Thank you for the review. These little guitars appeal to me, and I have thought about buying one in the past, but hesitated because I couldn't imagine how to play without the support of the body, especially the right arm (I play mainly classical)-so this information was very interesting and helpful. I'll know to plan on getting a strap if I get one. By the way, that flamenco sample you played near the end sounds amazingly good, despite the limitations!

for classical it should be fine, and it comes with a strap! x

The flamenco piece is a farruca. You can find many examples of it around the web. The basic form is easy to get to grips with and from there it can get annoyingly complex. As always with flamenco. :-D

Hi Edina -- I have a Soloette, which has a frame that makes it feel a lot like a real classical guitar when it is being played. It is silent, but can be played with headphones. Of course, it has no real soundboard, so any kind of golpes are out of the question. But it disassembles very easily and could be put in a backpack. Nice review of the Martin!

Few years ago I was looking to buy a tavel guitar and I found it too expensive and also the body of the guitar does not allow any tapping.Evntually,I chose washburn rover which cost only £145

The serial number has in code the date and place of construction, but you need an online decoder or know the language of the label.

I would not recommend to use steel string. Maybe you could get the steel string version. That guitar is designed for classical neck, the steel string design is different. I am not sure if this would work.

Guitars designed for nylon strings should NEVER be strung with steel strings. The body and neck are not strong enough to accommodate them.

While this is generally true, remember this guitar was designed to be a robust backpacker designed for steel strings. As far as I know, the only differences bergen this and the steel string are the width of the fretboard. She has a newer model with the addition of a noadjustable truss rod and wider body... that we 2002... for both steel and nylon.

What I mean to say is that unless travel (backpacking or not) is local there is not a guitar that will fit into what many airlines consider to be carry-on. Of course this has nothing to do with this guitar, but everything to do with travelling with a musical instrument larger than a harmonica! :))
