When you look at his mum it’s possible that whenever he had friends they would either get deterred by his awful mother or his awful mother forebode him from being friends with anyone he got close to. So he became sheltered and couldn’t pickup any social skills so he read science magazines to cope with his loneliness and that’s why he fought hard to keep them in the first season.
