My top 7 for what it's worth, all studio. 1 Fireball 2 Machine Head 3 In Rock 4 Who Do We Think We Are 5 Come Taste The Band 6 Burn 7 Stormbringer For me personally having grown up with Deep Purple, anything they did after Come Taste The Band I'm not interested in, I have them all but it just doesn't do it for me and they really should now call it a day, should have done it years ago, I admire Led Zeppelin for never reuiniting as their legacy will never be tainted.

My top 10 would be 1. In Rock 2. Fireball 3. Machine Head 4. Burn 5. Purpendicular 6. Deep Purple (self titled) 7. Now What? 8. Perfect Strangers 9. Stormbringer 10. Abandon I didn't include any live albums or bootlegs because that's its own list. On extended songs I couldn't disagree more, I love extended songs and improvisational jams. For me songs performed live the same as the studio version are sterile, boring, and lack passion and creativity. My favorite Deep Purple live performances are almost all from '69-'71 when they were at their most extended and improvisational...

Turning to Crime should have been covers of Mark I, III and IV songs with a couple outside tracks like Oh Well and Lucifer. Mandrake Root, Hey Joe, Kentucky Woman, Wring That Neck, Why Didn’t Rosemary, Bird Has Flown, Sail Away, What’s Going On Here, Mistreated, The Gypsy, Love Child are songs an older Gillan could handle well with Ezrin’s production. This would allow for Purple to expand their set list some what.

You would never ever get Ian Gillan to sing DP Mk3 songs even if he could handle them. I believe he has done some Mk1 songs, such as Bird Has Flown, Mandrake Root, Hush, and maybe a couple more.

Martin is a phenomenon in his own right, he writes a books about a group that he actually doesn't like. He likes the albums from the late period the most, and not the albums from the beginning of the group's career, which are real masterpieces and among the most important albums of rock history of all time. Who doesn't consider those albums the best in the whole in the group's catalog, he actually doesn't like Deep Purple. For me, Martin is a joke because it is known that he likes punk and new wave the most.

As always, I post mine before I watch the show, so I am not influenced by anything mentioned by these two great contributors. I enjoy the Morse era...but no way can I put any of them over an album with Blackmore on it!!! 10. Concerto for Group and Orchestra - Just love this masterpiece! A wonderful blend of classical and hard rock. 9. Battle Rages On - Hugely under appreciated. The live performance "Come Hell or High Water" is on fire..even with Ritchie being a complete asshole!! 8. Who Do We Think We Are - another hugely overlooked album. Some great heavy riffs and Ian Gillan is awesome. 7. Made in Europe - THE live version of "Burn" and "You Fool No One" - Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice are ignited like the sun!! Great stuff!! 6. Machine Head - Just a classic. The production is just a touch too dry for me..but the playing is brilliant. So many vintage tracks on one album. 5. Fireball - Title track IS the template for future speed metal..side two is very heavy and amazing! 4. Live in London - Another monster performance of the Mark II lineup. Brilliant recording and oh my goodness, the playing is a masterclass!! 3. Burn - Most bands would have folded with the loss of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. Not Deep Purple..this is a powerhouse album that really proved that Ritchie, Jon and Ian could change and still be outstanding! 2. In Rock - THE most important and breathtaking hard rock album. A pure 10/10 masterpiece!! 1. Made in Japan - My favorite rock album of all-time! Live OR Studio. The fact there isn't one overdub is insane!!! The power, the energy, the creativity, and the sound!!! Martin Birch ...THE master engineer!!!! It's the live experience of extended solos that made Deep Purple THE most dangerous and powerful live band of their era. No one could improvise and play with such confidence and mastery of their instruments!

Love deep purple ,but a covers album ,turning to crime??,no thanks, don't get me wrong ,they still play well, the singing (for their age) is still great, but when a group or artist resorts to churning out a covers album ,then that tells me that that's the end for the group with nothing left to say.hopefully they will prove me wrong and they will bring out a new album chock full of great new songs . wasn't really a fan of shades of deep purple or book of taliesyn either. For me the 1969 concerto album is where I started thinking ....YEAH ,THIS IS A FANTASTIC BAND.

First of all: Two of my favorite people on Music KZbin. Great. Purple is one of the first Bands I've ever listened to. I had a compilation called "The Deepest Purple". However, I never really got deep into them. I have another compilation, called "The Gold Collection" or something like this. Other than that I only have Mark-2-Studio Albums ("In Rock", "Fireball", "Machine Head" and "Perfect Strangers") and some Live Albums. Mostly from the Mark-2-Line-up as well. "Come Hell or High Water" was my first and I really like it. Recently I got a box that contains the full concerts from Stuttgart and Birmingham. "Made in Japan" of course and a couple of Legacy Releases ("Live in Copenhagen 1972", "Live in Stockholm 1970" & "Live in Long Beach 1971"). Among those I have two from other Line-Ups ("Paris 1975" and "Long Beach 1976"). Paris is with Blackmore, Long Beach with Tommy Bolin. I'm not really a fan of Bolin doing Blackmore's stuff. Same for Coverdale doing Gillan-Songs. Glenn Hughes' voice I generally don't like. I have considered to at least give "Stormbringer" and "Burn" a try, but as of now I haven't done so. I like Whitesnake, so I should at least get something out of Coverdale's songs, I guess. Great Show. Love both your insights.

Well surprised how you both rated Purple's albums and Burn would most likely be at the bottom of my pile it's a mediocre album with only a couple of good songs on it. The only thing I will agree with here is how you described the live album Made In Japan Phil with how it brought the songs from Machine Head to life and it surely did because I felt the recordings on the studio album were very dry and undercooked. Machine Head is not what I would call a solid album either and it's only really those songs they played live from it that cut the mustard in my opinion. I also think "When A Blind Man Cries" was way better than some of the crap they put on that album especially "Maybe I'm A Leo" and "Never, Never Before". My ultimate Purple album has to be In Rock and my second choice would go to Fireball because both of these albums are what I would call SOLID! and there is not a bad track on any of them.

One of the most disappointing concerts I ever attended was Deep Purple around 1976, terrible sound system, way too loud for the venue, sounded like a giant 90 minute excruciating buzz, flash forward to my favorite concert (or at least tied) in 2001, Deep Purple with Steve Morse, still really loud but the sound system was so so good , really kinda shocked me because both times my main interest was the opening act , Nazareth, Nazareth stole the show in 76, they were fantastic, Love Hurts and Hair of the Dog had only been played 2 or 3 million times in 76 , so even those two songs were great, but in 2001 Nazareth was still great but Deep Purple put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Martin Popoff made a factual mistake here: Deep Purple in Rock was released on June 5th 1970 (Wikipedia). I think he got that confused with Black Night, which was released in late summer but became a #2 hit in October '70. That's to take nothing away from Uriah Heep, another great band, and (to me) way ahead of Black Sabbath.

Hi Phil, just watched this for the first time, one minor point I don't know about the other side of the pond but on this side, both In Rock & Very Eavy Very Umble were released in June1970, within about a week of each other. So that rather eliminates the argument about which came first in the creation of Heavy Metal. Other than that a brilliant video even if I disagree with a lot of Martin's opinions, well done to you both.

I had so much fun following you two on your quest, and going back to some albums that weren't too familiar and appreciating them in a new way (Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band...). Thanks for the inspiration! I'm really curious if they are going to record another album without Steve Morse. But I just don't want them to stop now, considering how good the last outputs were. Thinking about a favourite album, I myself have a soft spot for "Bananas".

I really enjoyed the comparisons of the various Deep Purple albums . A fan since 1968 a few comments . Happy to see Purpendicular receive accolades as it is almost a masterpiece . Could not agree with Martin's high ranking of Abandon , and Perfect Strangers has 3 or4 good songs , but doesn't hold up as as a " great " album . Kudos to Martin for mentioning " Look At Yourself " by Uriah Heep . That song would have been a perfect fit on In Rock ! Criticism - not enough love for Now What ! Could be top 5 ! Playing non stop in the car for months now ! Great show Phil !
