Jean Renoir is an incredible artist, the son of the great Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In my opinion, he is the greatest of that amazing generation of filmmakers that started in silent film and went on to make great sound films (Dreyer, Ford, Hawks, Hitchcock, etc.).

One of my favorite movies of all time. Saw it when I was young and bought the movie just recently. Magical.

Please buy the book too! the author, Rumer Godden, writes about making this movie with Renoir in her one of her autobiographies "A Time To Dance, No Time to Weep," or "Two Under The Indian Sun." She insisted that the film be truthful to Indian life.

Saw The River when I was 12. Knocked me out! Made me wonder having seen Renoir's paintings, what kind of films he might have made....

So weird! I had never heard of this film before and just two days ago it popped up for free on a KZbin movie channel. I gave it a try and LOVED it! Then this Scorsese critique popped up just now. Thank you, logarithms! (LOL)

Without any doubt, this profound film is certainly one of the most beautiful color movies ever made. Like in the top ten. Ravishing and sublime, haunting and gorgeous. One dazzling example > 4:38

Absolutely LOVE The River. Off the top of my head one of the 3 most beautiful color films I've seen. Excellent appreciation by Martin here. BTW there's a good print of The River free on youtube right now.

A great video-trivia. Love to learn about Scorcese's outlook on 'The River' and the village simplicity of erstwhile India. Indeed, the movie is truly evocative.

Is there a better encomium and fascination for films, any, for the bygone yet unique cinema of first Colour/s, from a Land known much less, Culture that is steeped in variegated socio-political and individual moorings, thanks, the River, 'River', Jean Renoir, Satyajit Ray, Martin Scorsese,... ...the wonderful crew? Unforgettable is the archival resurgence, thanks, Humanity!

Hmm. I found his talk about The River more intersting than the movie. I think La Grand Illusion is excellent, and have much the same opinion of The Rules of the Game as Mr Scorsese,

They paid Sabu not to be in "The River". Hollywood should do the same for me with every film they make. They can afford it. So fork it over already yet.

IT's too bad most of his movies are about low-life scumbags. He probably could have made some beautiful movies, with DeNiro.

The irony, all that skill and yet many of his films wouldn't appeal to the filmmakers he admired or to the huge audiences he desired. Maybe he just needed an Emeric Pressburger.
