Yeah she was deceptively quick, and she could still smash aces and whip the shots back despite her size, alot of players underestimated her to their peril but once the Williams sisters came along she knew her time was up and immediately retired from singles tennis, sticking to doubles for a while before retiring fully. But she was the Queen of the late 90s women's scene.

@@Jeremy-f3s sure it's a combination of a few factors. but I wouldn't discount equipment factor as not a major turning point. there are several athletes as well that have suffered from such a defective product. I, myself as an athlete was unfortunate to suffer such an injury. luckily, I recovered but it took a year of therapy for me to get back to playing. who knows what would have happened if I used the product for much longer.

@@tellyshonestreviews1293 duno what equipment you're talking about, we are talking about why Hingis retired and it was cos she stopped winning due to players coming onto the scene like the Williams sisters that she could not compete with. So she switched to doubles and continued to have success. She was a contrary sulky sort of girl, if things didn't go her way she'd just quit. Like if she was losing a match she'd resort to underarm serves which are considered bad sportsmanship. She didn't like to lose because for that short period in the late 90s she dominated as she was beating all the old players who were close to retirement while she was still in her late teens, once she herself started meeting other younger players like the Williams sisters who quickly began dominating themselves or Jelena Dokic who mopped the floor with her as she was even younger than Hingis, then Martina quit, and she was only just in her 20s but she didn't want to start being beaten so she quit to avoid that. She didn't gradually decline like alot of players, she just quit.

This match goes down to the history book for many different reasons. Martina Hingis' first slam win as an bloody 16 years-old. It's ridiculous to think about that to this day. She played with such a maturity and composure like someone who played in the tour for years. Her style of tennis remained the same for the rest of her career. Not a lot of power but mastery of playing geometry of the court. She used every inch of the court to her advantage. Her skill was something to be revered. Also, this match was interesting in fashion sense. Mary wore the most flattering (and comfortable) outfit I've ever seen. That ball holder that Hingis wore was the coolest tennis accessories ever.

Hingis took the balls so incredibly early, esp. her forehands, even much before their highest point, taking time away from Pierce.

@thb1091 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, that often compensated for her lack of natural power and made it so she actually liked playing against big hitters (save for the rare few Serena/Davenport level first strikers who gave her 0 space to rally). This might seem like a weird comparison on the surface but I've always thought of Hingis as kind of like a mid-point between Chris Evert and Monica Seles.

Start of an insane season for Martina. 48 matches played in 1997, 47 matches won! And even her defeat in the French Open final was seen as a consequence of her still technically recovering from a knee injury at the time. I've not seen that match since it happened so that may be doing Iva Majoli a disservice. But either way, it was a sensational year for Hingis.

Yeah but power isn't everything, this is tennis which is as much about placing the balls well as it is about just smashing everything. She also had more agility cos she was smaller than massive women like Mary Pierce, she only retired at all when the Williams sisters came along cos she knew full well nobody would compete with them with their physical statures and she was right.
@tunayurttas6497
@tunayurttas6497 2 ай бұрын
@@Jeremy-f3s I think the reason she retired was that she lost motivation. She won 35 singles, 40 doubles, 5 grand slam titles at the age of 21. After the Williams sisters, tennis became more physical as you said and Martina didn't have enough mental energy for a new challenge.
@Jeremy-f3s
@Jeremy-f3s 2 ай бұрын
@@tunayurttas6497 Yeah probably, she could often sulk alot too if things didn't go her way cos she got so used to wiping the floor with every player of the time that whenever she did come up against a tougher opponent she would break down easier (underarm serves were her trademark when she was losing) and the Williams sisters were impossible to beat, as you say she had such a remarkable dominance at such a young age that by the time she was in her 20s she'd done it all and was already like an old woman, I mean they go on about Djokovic these days but this girl was a female GOAT. Emma Radacanu is the only other player since Hingis I can think of who won a slam as a teenager, I guess there are probably others but not many I'm guessing, most are at least into their 20s when they're having the sorts of successes Martina did.

But as a whole, women's tennis has regressed in respect of variety. Now it's just thumping the ball into the corners. Did you see how Hingis took it early, went behind Pierce, volleyed, changed pace, sharp angles etc? Besides - what do you expect from 25 years of sports technology - that they'd now be hitting the ball more slowly? I think it would be interesting to time some of these rallies to see what the average shot time is - and compare it with a similar match today. And don't forget Pierce, Venus, Graf etc were much bigger hitters than Hingis. They will barely be behind today's top women
