Excellent guide! For anyone looking to do this just beware one of the locking nuts will be reverse threaded. From memory they both undo in a downwards action when the spanner is to the front of the car.

Thank you, I will try this. Got my steering wheel off center a few (around 5) degrees to the left. After off-road.

Great video! Thank you. I just acquired a brand new 2024 Jimny 3door. Had a full Ironman 2” liftkit installed including castor correction bushes and cross member in addition to springs and dampers. Then fitted 235/75/15 BFG KO2s and now have a rather dramatic death wobble steering wheel shake at 60-65 km/h. It comes and goes. Would you have any idea why? Any input is very welcome. Thanks

Do the front wheels need to be off the ground to do this ????
@baggas4 жыл бұрын
Great video Thankyou. Your solution looks like something even a mechanical novice like me could attempt. My problem after having the lift installed is that the car veers left if I take my hands off the wheel. And I have to hold the steering wheel turned a bit right to keep it going straight. Do you think your steering rod adjustment as shown would fix this or do I need to take it in for more complicated work?
@atosalvador3 жыл бұрын
Hi baggas, i get the same problem. Did you solve it?
@erich94752 жыл бұрын
Hi, Did you change the front and rear lateral rods? If lifting the vehicle these rods need to be altered, the easiest is to fit adjustable rods otherwise the front and rear diffs are dragged sideways to the right.

I'm going to install a kit of 2in Dobinsons on Gen 4. O have the option to do it with only shocks and springs and the second apart from that with coil caster and panhard bar, do you think it's worth it?
@bigjimny2 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with the dobinsons lift. It depends how high their 2" lift is (all lifts have different heights achieved) if it's a low lift, day 48mm I would not bother. If it's a high lift perhaps over 60mm I might consider the panhard correction.
@albertoesparza82942 жыл бұрын
@@bigjimny It is 50mm but with this video and your other video the installation of the suspension I decided to only put the shock absorbers and springs. Thank you for the answer and greetings from Mexico.

so with a 2 inch rise you also need to do a steering axel adjustment ?

That arm you picked up wasn't the steering arm, that's the tie rod, similar but it doesn't go to the steering box.

Bolts eventually yielded. Managed to align steering wheel on my car and a friend's car. The problem with the Jimny is that it has a steering pull compensation mechanism (also called Pull Drift Compensation - PDC). After mechanically fixing the misalignment you might find that the steering is pulling to one side. My car recalibrated itself during a long drive. My friend's car didn't. There's a procedure that claims to solve this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnqZhattjc2Mjposi=-7ZKXAs8tXeNJd7J. Will report back after this procedure is attempted on my friend's car.

Your Jimny is fitted with electric steering??. I am sorry but I don't believe this. I will check it out on our own vehicles but I have not had to adjust the steering centre sensor. This is because before the lift the sensor is correctly zeroed. After the lift the sensor is slightly out due to the rod being pulled slightly over. Adjusting the rod length brings the steering and hence sensor back to zero. No electronics adjustment needed. I will check it out and will happily stand corrected if I am wrong. The steering centre sensor and steering acceleration sensor are, as far as I am concerned, used for the ESP and lidar system
@blablabla4022 Жыл бұрын
@@bigjimny As far as I know, all JB74W cars have electric power steering
@bigjimny Жыл бұрын
@@blablabla4022 yes I think it's a mis interpretation on my part I though you were referring to "fly by wire" electric steering where there is no connection between the steering wheel and wheels. I do see that you said yours auto adjusted which I think is what should happen. I certainly seems to have happened on the ones I have done which is why I am challenging people who say you have to reset the zero position. My guess is that my technique of doing the drag rod adjustment multiple times with driving in between, which I do to average out the play probably overcomes this. I do it multiple times as, due to the play in the steering, when you adjust it back you tend to over compensate. So it's adjust a bit , drive for a bit and repeat. It then comes in ok in my experience with no playing with the electronics

Update: pull drift compensation is not available on our computer with the Jimny. Need to find other equipment.

Were you turning them the correct way, one is reverse threaded. Leave them to soak with penetrating oil for a few days
@blablabla4022 Жыл бұрын
@@bigjimny Thanks Martin. Appreciate the reply and the excellent video (and many other videos). I’m quite sure I was turning them the correct way. Applied oil upfront but only waited a minute. Wasn’t aware of the effect days would have. I’ll spray some more and let it soak. Will heating help? Thought I’d let it breathe some of my wife’s hairdryer wind for 10 min. The rubber bushings look fragile and I’m afraid of damaging them while I fiddle with it

So right, I don't know why people keep having the Jimny's alignment done after a suspension lift or even fitting new tyre's! Unless there is bad uneven tyre wear. Ps Yes worked on Buses, trucks, and motorcycles for over 30 years.
@bigjimny2 жыл бұрын
Do your buses have drag link steering? Pythagoras and his triangles says the steering drag link shortens slightly after a lift, pulling the steering slightly out of line at the steering wheel. Yes, the car drives straight, but the steering wheel is angled
@overland_adventure_nz2 жыл бұрын
@@bigjimny Hi, yes the buses and Overland Trucks had drag link steering. Yes lifting suspension effectively Shorten's the drop link, in the USA on a number of older Jeeps when lifted a longer offset drop link corrected the steering with a match lift. I can understand that electric power-assist steering sensor may also need recalibrating to help too. I'm not planning to lift my Jimny! It's higher ground clearance than the Gen3 were. Do plan to fit 16" rim's and taller tyre's to have more axle clearance.

A lift kit is a dumb thing fitted for daft people. It does NOT increase ground clearance. For that, fit portal axles or larger diameter wheels; each with its own disadvantages. A Lift kit does NOT increase the height of the differentials. Really, people can do really dumb things. Go measure, do the math, apply logic. Very basic physics.
@bigjimny9 ай бұрын
Thats correct, but put a bit strong to be honest. It doesnt increase ground clearance as you say and you will not hear me say so. But people do want to fit larger tyres so they fit lift kits. that does not make them daft
@barrylauth68383 ай бұрын
This comment is dumb. People don't just lift the car for axle clearance and it certainly does increase clearance of the chassis so approach, departure and breakout angles are all improved. Granted COG is raised which is not good but typical lift kits also mostly have stiffer rate springs to cope with heavier loads for overland. And get real dude. Portal axles are not available or affordable for most people..... so my conclusion is your response to the OP is dumb. I fear you suffer from Kruger Dunning effect.... go look it up if you don't know what it means.
