Martin, this is a GEM of a watch from start to finish. It seems that after years of abuse, being polluted, being used as a trash bin, being culverted, used as a sewer and cursed as a eyesore the River Medlock stood strong and she is ready for her comeback. Thanks Martin for your time, effort and HARD work you have put into your River Medlock series. Thanks to the team.....

I’m a clayton lad, born 1969, and the medlock was always a mystical watercourse, steeped in folklore ( the great flood of the late Victorian era) and it served as no mans land, when the raids occurred on clayton tip ( now vale) between us, and newton heath. I am a bit younger than you, but have the same sense of wonder about manchester and its industrial relics. I also have the same taste in music as your good self ( i was a drummer for the chameleons 12 years back) i worked extensively in pest control for 14 years, and around 2009, i was in the sub levels of the midland hotel working, in the maintenance tunnels. My trainer lifted up a grid cover, and lo and behold, there was the Tib. Flowing beneath. I hope you continue the Medlock going upstream from phillips park. There is an interesting service tunnel/ walkway via the old bridge, that branches off a path off bank st, once you walk under the old arches that went into stewart st power station. Still so much to know about the meddy, as you go up clayton vale. Dug

There were so many 2 up 2 down terraced houses (euphemistically referred to ‘cottages’ these days). I was born in one and remember the tin bath and hot water being boiled in a galvanised bucket on the stove. I bought my own house-without a bathroom-in 1981. We put a bathroom in, so it was my first proper bathroom. I was 23.

I think you and your channel get a bit of credit, for this. I remember, when the Medlock series first began, that the river was a mess- trash everywhere, and who knows what, down in the muck. That was a really interesting watch I'm loving the fact that it's been uncovered after all these years. It would be quite interesting to watch after a heavy rain fall to see how high the water goes, I guess that's why they kept the high walls quite high to stop it coming over just in case. The old photographs and the overhead views really did show the area of brilliantly from then to now. This series has just been a real eye opener for all us views thanks for sharing your journey along the Medlock with us.👍

A few miles upstream at Daisy Nook it can flood really badly, spilling its banks and shutting roads; not sure how that affects it downstream but it's a typical west Pennine river. Short, steep, and catching a lot of rain.

Another great vid, mate. Great that they've opened the river up and done some tidying. Sad that many of the rivers in our cities were culverted and horrendously polluted so fair play to Manchester City Council for this project (assuming it's their work). Stockport, take note and open up the Mersey!

Great video, Martin. Nice to see on a summer's day. The voice of the talking clock (T.I.M.), Pat Simmons, died in 2005. It now gets a bit eerie: the machine that used her voice (which was recorded on glass discs), was on display, and working, at the British Horological Institute. On the day Pat died, though, so did the machine. It got slower, and stopped. I heard about this on a radio programme some years ago, and to be honest, it freaked me out a bit. Probably just wear and tear... But you can't help wondering.

Hi Martin, Great vid as always - I've been following your series for years so I've been waiting for when you would get to this new section. @33:22 you mentioned that it gets quite narrow and think they will dredge/make this bit deeper. This won't be the case as channelling and dredging increases the flow of water which during flooding is the opposite of what you would want. they have created those beds on either side and sometimes on the outside of the river bend so that in times of floods, the vegetation will slow the water down to reduce flooding down stream. It also increased wildlife and as you saw later in the video (@41:40 and a lesser extant, @41:11), when they narrow the river down, but keep it relatively shallow, it creates almost like a brook creating specific and varied habitats along the river for certain types of wildlife like fresh water shrimps. It also helps with aeration of the water which would be needed is such a slow moving river.

Glad you covered this section Martin. It is so interesting, just like the other Medlock videos which to me are mind-blowing! I never knew that the river was just at the back of Mayfield station, and what is happening with this park seems a real good venture indeed. Seeing that bracket in between the walls at one stage was a great discovery, and also that other piece what was further along in the wall. Going under the huge viaduct that supports the lines into Piccadilly was a feat of mega-construction for it's time, by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway initially. Your videos are most excellent, Martin, as I've mentioned before, but the Manchester City Centre ones like this are what I'd call 'powerful'! Many thanks for this production which includes some lovely photographs and maps of old.
