Martti Talvela was one of the most endearing singers in the history of music. He was a giant of a man, both physically & musically. He was, to the basso, what Pavarotti was to the tenor. Both had such a broad range & sang effortlessly. And both had such powerful instruments.

I heared Talvela first in Düsseldorf singing Sarastro about 57 years ago. What always bothered me about him was the larmoryante approach, the falling into the note from above.
