I come back to pre-disney MCU from time to time and am surprised at how tangible it feels, especially Iron Man. I am hopeful that blockbuster movies will have that same level of gravity and artistry again.

Disney is the MCU though. Granted Iron Man 1 and The Incredibke Hulk were released before Disney took ownership theyve been in charge of Marvel since about 2010. Majority of MCU is Disney and likely your favorite MCU film is by Disney as well

Its okay if they are but those are the only none Disney MCU films. Guardians of the Galaxy 1 was more of a Disney product than a James Gunn product. Guardians 3 was the most James Gunn was James Gun with his trilogy. Also, The Winter Soldier basically boils down to mindless visuals yet you claim its one of their best. The problem has never been comic books, no one has ever made these complaints about oldboy, or edge of tomorrow, or any other adaptation made because the story spoke to an artist who wanted to tell it again with their voice. Marvel films are so much loved not because of their superhero-ness, that's like a dessert, but the main course is the emotional journey that we go on with the characters that are so different from each other over the course of serveral epic enthralling movies and TV shows. Just finished Loki, and seeing how his arc turned from being a "loser" and "God of Mischief" into being the one fulfilling his "glorious purpose" and the "God of Time" was so moving and satisfying.

I think we're at a point now, where most all of entertainment has become solely focused on squeezing as much cash out of a customer. Not just in film either, I see it in all areas of entertainment. It's coming to the point where these mediums rely on individual creators, many times with small budgets, to keep the art alive

Most of the Japanese 2D entertainment industry consists of shonen, and i'm just not a big fan of it at all (only ones i actually like are Chainsaw Man and Death Note). Much as I love movies, TV shows, or video games, my favourite medium has always been comics. And your comment at the end about finding other work through superhero movies first spoke to me. I'm in my 40s. I started reading comics in the early 90s with The Death of Superman. And for years, I obsessed over the minutiae of DC and Marvel (and Image to a lesser extent). After awhile, though, I got tired of the meaningless events or shock moments that were undone less than a year later. I started branching out. First to smaller titles like James Robinson's Starman. But then I started checking out non-DC or Marvel comics like Hellboy. Or Vertigo comics like Sandman or Preacher. I checked out other random comics that Wizard magazine would mention or praise. Then I read the best advice when it came to reading comics: "Follow creators, not characters." I discovered Greg Rucka after he wrote parts of Batman: No Man's Land. I sought out his other work, like Whiteout and Queen & Country. I discovered his novels. But then through him, I discovered artists he worked with and checked out some of their other work. I expanded and expanded and expanded. I'd pick up random comics because they just looked interesting. I sough out creators with different voices than my own (non-white, non-male, non-cis, non-straight) to see the world from their point of view. These days, I barely read DC or Marvel anymore. I'm too busy reading everything else. Heck, I'm still discovering old comics, like Hal Foster's Prince Valiant. And much like people who put far too much focus on superhero movies today, I feel comic readers think the only world out there is DC or Marvel. Comics aren't a genre, they're a medium, just like movies. It's limiting to focus on just one small part of a much broader world out there and I say that for both film AND comics.

My favourite artists in comics are: Alison Bechdel, Daniel Clowes, Neil Gaiman, Jens Harder (scientific comics!), Fumiyo Kōno, Isabel Kreitz, Nora Krug, Jeph Loeb, Jason Lutes, Marc-Antoine Mathieu (surrealist genius!), Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Marjane Satrapi (also a good movie director!), Jacques Tardi, Craig Thompson, Chris Ware (his "Jimmy Corrigan" is basically "the great American novel" in comics form). If there is but one amongst them you have not checked out yet, please do yourself a favour and check them out next.

I hate how MCU fans in retaliation to Marty’s comments always try to present him as some kind of snob who only likes and makes “pretentious” “arthouse” films. Like, it’s Martin fucking Scorsese lmao, that guy makes some of the most mainstream and accessible movies there are. You should watch some of his films at one point, I consider the ones with DiCaprio as a good start, the most accesible and succesful ones, most people loves Leo (my favorite is The Aviator), and he's part of the reason of why those films were succesful, but much more, his films with De Niro are gems too, a film that I always will recommend is "Hugo", set in Paris at the end of XIX century, when cinema was created, a beutiful homage to films and the pioneer of film George Melies, it's a even a good movie to watch with family, ,ight be his most childish/family friendly film, but that's why it's one of my favorites and inspiring.

I highly recommend three movies by Marty, all deal in some form or other with loneliness, alienation, an aspiration to make a difference, problems of connecting with others, neglect and hurt, fear of insignificance, delusions of grandeur, blurred reality, some sort of frenzy. They are: "The King of Comedy", "Taxi Driver", "Bringing Out the Dead".

I'm glad you're talking about other aspects of that interview. Like you, I also obviously like a lot of superhero stuff, but there's always a need for balance and variety in storytelling. So there needs to be more options for us all in genre and in tone. As someone who's an illustrator and animator, one who does work on superhero stuff, as well as anime inspired work. I still want to see a wide array of animation and ideas that come from people who care about what they make. Not just tech bros and company suits that want to reduce art into half baked sludge with no artistic vision nor any respect to the people who make art, as so much of these modern issues stem from rushing things out, abusing workers or stealing the work of others to just generate into some computer-made uncanny abomination. It's just annoying to see people not tell the difference between good art or even rookie art and compare it to the poorly made copies.

What’s funny is that the more time goes on, the more Scorsese is right. Disney Marvel is digging its own grave. Meanwhile original films, whether or not it’s popular at the current moment, will ALWAYS be valued above other types of films.

As a film student this hits pretty close to my heart and brains, tears in my eyes, you've done it again Alex. Plus today I found out that some new bullshit will be approved for next year in my country (Uruguay) that's changing the educational systems, and one of those many things is cutting hours of all the career mayors, such as screenplay intro, production workshop, audiovisual workshop, and therefore giving more hours to math, physics, English, many of my teachers will be thinking of getting different jobs and figuring out what they're going to do with their lives, we're talking 37 hours weekly reduced to 10 hours, some of my teachers barely make living these days and now next year after elections they will be having a "limosna" hand out salaries, + the writers strike and everything going on just makes me sad, it is a real horror film, in the midst of all this madness, videos like this turn a light in my head, at least I can see a way forward, and the road I'm in.

It won't be. It'll probably make profit but not by much. Marty has never been a big box office guy anyway so I think they know what to expect. And considering this movie was going to be shelved on Apple TV + I think they'll be happy with what they get.

I'm study film at a University right now, and it is filled with a lot of aspiring filmmaker's. Not sure if I am one of them yet. I always thought I was the weird guy who liked old under the raider films from De Palma and Scorsese, and everyone else just wants to grow up to star or direct a superhero movie. Yeah there is one student who's whole pitch was a "deconstruction" Batman movie where Batmen just kills criminals. But there are a whole lot of aspiring film geeks today who's inspirations come from everywhere outside of superhero and genre films.

The things you’ve had to say, that I’ve been watching and getting joy from these past few years, had so little to do with the superheroes. You talked about heart, and vision, and trauma, and love and had some REALLY worthwhile observations. To me, that’s what makes a great artist. This video really resonated with me. Despite some of the opinions you make that I completely disagree with, this is one of those videos I am really happy you created. It is a difficult endeavor to create, superheroes will always be a part of my life. Hell, if not for The Batman, I wouldn't have gotten into film, it changed me, I have never seen a movie so... In control. No corporate meddling for the sake of toys, no after credits establishing 10 other sequels, just a pure batman film, pure art to me. Because of that, one day I want to create something as thought provoking as that, one day I aspire to be one of the greats such as Scorsese, this video really inspired me, man. Thank you.

The Dark Knight movie kinda ended batman for me. Like mentally for me it is the best superhero movie like ever so where do you go from there? You can do reboots and they did one but the thing I noticed is that usually superhero movie after delivering one good original movie gets into the sequel which provides diminishing returns. They retouch the beats of the first movie basically trying to recreate the magic of first one. These movies are now starting to feel like like television sitcoms. Like when you see Seinfeld or Friends if you watched one episode you basically watched the whole show and these movies feel that way. Being circular is fine for sitcoms as they come up with new episodes every weekend plus nobody is leaving their homes for a sitcom, so the bar of quality is lower. But when people are expected to go out and pay for movie tickets for sitcom quality that is a provlem. The thing with Marty is that he is always pushing, always trying to reinvent himself so he is always telling new stories. Always taking risks. Even his latest film about the native american murders is a massive risk. Something that superhero movies now avoid.

Scorsese never had a problem with comic book movies. People forget he was an executive producer on Joker. His problem was with the MCU formula and how it was destroying Hollywood. He was absolutely right. Marvel Studios did long term damage to movies as a whole

1000% agrees with you and Scorsese, he was 100% right, hate how always the internet have to twist these things for views, and more so than at the time he said it, now feels a lot more relevant, how corporate some of the franchises films start becoming, with a very few exceptions, but I think people are already tired of super heroes, thank god the 3 most successful films this year aren't even comic book adaptations, but still the fear of Martin remains..........even if is not super heroes, who stop this corporate hats to do the same to.....game adaptations, toys adaptations, or any big IP adaptation which sadly also have become the thing....yes this year and last year the 3 biggest weren't super heroes....but still are part of a FRANCHISE , hell the one who have the most risks and was less of a big franchise was the SEQUEL of the highest grossing film of all time, and this year is a TOY film, so now more than ever is harder for anything be created that is all fully original that get that much attention...if we go by that you have to go all the way back to 1998 to see a year in which the top 2 where actually original stories (Armageddon and Saving Private Ryan) to see a year in box office that wasn't dominated by well know IPS or sequels, hell 98 is the year the biggest sequel in that entire list was Lethal Weapon 4, that year have Shakespeare in Love, Mulan, Saving Private Ryan, There's Something About Mary as some of the biggest box office attractions, films that today will do SHIT with the way audience are, and it sucks, Cinema was all about innovate, inspire, entertain, let the VISION of someone who knows what he is doing behind the camera or at least pretend to, very well XD and is having fun making his dream comes true....I'm a comicbook artist man and is kinda the same, I live in DR and when ever we are in a convention if you toss a Spiderman Comic side by side one we did that is a original story created by us, inspired by our own myths and culture, GUESS WHICH ONE WILL SELL FIRST? The live of the artist is HARD man, but is not about who sell more....I more happy when I sell 1 book and that person comeback to me with an opinion about that book...........even if is a BAD ONE, the fact he /she / Them care to go back and tell me what he thought about my work is something special now, I used to be in arms when was a bad critique (not going to lie I still does) but I value that more now than ever, knowing how hard it is to create something and that something need to technically fight for it's existence against all these well established stories, but is fun when something succeed, or at least give you the reasons to keep going, so I completely understand what Martin said was 100% true to all of us no matter if is CINEMA, GAMES, COMICS, BOOKS, TV SHOWS, MUSIC, is all the same one way or the other.

Martin's statement isn't that there should be either super hero movies or Scorsese films. He's saying that super hero films had been too successful and it was difficult to get anything non-super hero film green lit. The MCU has stumbled since then but he's right. We need variety. However much you love any MCU movie, I love Lost in Translation more. I need stories of two people lost, one young and one old, who interact in a foreign country and for a brief moment, there's clarity before they go back to being lost but hopefully a little bit has been gained. I was lost at 20 and I'm not sure I'm more found at 40, I need these stories. I need stories like Kiki's delivery service where you work you're ass off, get sick, lose business and have to just work your ass off again. It's not an epic mission to stop aliens, it's that life sucks and you gotta deal with it. I need these stories. There's nothing wrong with stories about people punching through walls, it's that the human experience needs more stories than just people punching through walls.

Warner Bros really pushed him to keep Leonardo DiCaprio or Matt Damon alive in the Departed because they wanted a franchise…. One of the most brutally, beautiful endings in a crime drama was almost thrown out because franchise… He has a point

i've been watching you for years now man and I was starting to feel like I would love to hear your opinion and thoughts on films outside superhero ones. I think you hit the nail on the head in this video where people are afraid to try new types of content to watch. I myself started to misunderstand what films really were because I was so obsessed with easter eggs and shit but once I had a real connection with a film I realised there's soo much more to this and I love it.
