I bought one of those expense box tuners you had to plug in back in the early 80's. Cost over a hundred and was hard enough to use. It had a switch you'd choose which string you were tuning and then have to interpret a row of flashing light. I'd usually just use to to tune the high E, then tune the rest from it, finally checking my tuning. Life is so much easier now.

60 years ago I used my ear but I was a little flat.( Kinda like Hendrix) Then I used a tuning fork .(440) Then tuned the rest of the strings to the "tuned" string. Love the Snark now. Still can tune by ear. But, the Snark is spot on. Plus I just play un-electrified acoustic now. Happy Holidays Marty. You are a cool cat.

A piece of advice, my son used Marty since age 6, he is now 10, set a time every night to play guitar, zero distractions, once a song is completed reward them, you don’t work for free why should they… then move to next song * don’t purchase cheap music equipment, you get cheap results

I agree, it’s important to invest in good quality equipment.

Hey Marty, when I first started playing electric, somewhere between Hey Jude and Enagoddadavida, was inspired by Saw you Standing and Jumping Jack. I found that the band needs a keyboard. Somewhere between rattling strings and breaking strings there was the 5th fret tuning. There was also a thing called the pitch pipe. Lots of spit came out of that thing. For cost there was also the tuning fork. Some people that really knew what they were doing used harmonics and 7th fret tuning. The real old timey musicians just picked up the guitar and twittled the keys a little and played some really good rock like it was nothing. Me I found a harmonica worked pretty good. Back to band, you need a keyboard. Also no drums, no band. Then there's lead vocals and chorus. A good penatonic won't get you very far. And if you really know your music theory, a horn section. Marty you have been playing 30 years and sound way better than I do. But then again I'm way better looking and fit within my weight category, studied nutricion. With a new guitar you should teach not only tuning, but their first song. Crank up the amp to the extreme and show how to do the 1 string Smoke on the Water. Cheers.

MARTY, make a video lesson about "Sweetened Tuning". EVH and others would use Sweetened Tuning and some Tuners pedals have Sweetened Tuning Options. Its used for open tunings for acoustic guitars to EVH using Triads on the D-G-E strings to tune to the intervals so they don't cause beating weaving problems in the tuning. EVH also calls this offset tuning

Good to know about the Eclipse tuner. It sounds like it could be the easiest to get a friend or stranger to look at and tell me what they see. Every place I would end up playing with or for other people is going to be inundated with masking bass sounds at pretty much 11, onstage, plus outside in any parked vehicle, and that's all. I know not to trust folks who can see, about when to cross a road, but something has to give when you "can still hear the music from the restroom." Having them look at a tuner onstage, is not life threatening. I mean there is, chicken wire. This reminds me I still need some of those hollowed out earplugs that let you still hear, enough, but sort of filter out some of the more painful decibels. I don't remember what those were called, (I don't mean a whole "in ears" system.) I'm guessing you probably know what I mean. At home I can tune by ear, and then use the little fender app tuner, on my old phone to make that "clink" sound when it's spot on, and then kind of check it against strings and frets all over the fretboard. The journey to, any venue is always going to be bumpy and like a simulation of a mechanical bull, bus depot, and busy highway right next to me. That, ...or a simulation of Roseanne Barr and Roseannadanna, in an SUV. 😊So it will need to be tuned again after I take it anywhere else.

You forgot fine tuning by the fret method listening to the string vibrating after youve muted the one you fretted. I often use this method after using a tuner just to perfect it cos some of the cheaper tuners dont measure in such fine increments.

It would be so funny if you said you're screwed unless you have robotuners, it's the only way to keep the guitar in tune, otherwise it'd be so hard, and it'd take months to tune up a guitar, it's the best invention ever made for guitar etc etc. for 15 minutes :D. Haha Cheers Marty!!
