I know this is probably intended for beginners, but even for folks that have been playing for a while, it’s good to revisit the basics every so often. Thanks Marty for all that you do 😃

Marty, I first picked up a guitar 15 years ago. Your videos got me started. I fell off and picked it back up 3 months ago. Scales are I think the next step for me “unlocking” my fret board. I think I have the open chords going well at this point. Thank you for all the help over the years!

Marty, I like your style of teaching us beginners. You don’t go fast like others, I don’t have to rewind, slow down etc. I have purchased a nice few of your courses. Keep up the good work and keep it coming!

This is a great lesson, absolutely essential for a beginner as you can build so much off it, way better than simply learning ' Enter Sandman' or 'Smells like Teen Spirit' without understanding the theory of what you are playing which is how I started off on guitar.

O can almost certainly also be 0. Zero equals open makes sense to me. No surprises, even when I'm not being "a wise ass" I am still being one. Haha. Thanks man!!
@barryseither42712 ай бұрын
Hey man, zero makes sense, right? There's a number of frets and the first one has to be 1, so no fret is zero, right? Well sorry son, but no. The action of playing a note without pressing the string down on a fret is called an open note. That's exactly what Marty was addressing. People who don't understand this concept view tabs and incorrectly refer to an open note as a zero. Now, we all know that O is a letter and not a number and I personally will correct someone who says O when referring to numbers. That's what Marty is referring to. He says which finger to place on what number fret for each string and then says O because he's talking about an open note to which some "wise guys" try to correct by saying that the letter O is not a number. Well no shit buddy, we're not referring to a fret, we're referring to an open note. If that's still confusing, here is another way to look at it; if an open note meant zero than using the same concept, a fret number would mean the amount of frets you would be pressing on instead of which fret. Idk how else to explain it.

Marty, I’d like to share in giving you accolades, but I’m a beginner, a real beginner, can’t even play one song. So I followed fine in doing the pentatonic scale, but then you jumped the tracks for me. You went off into some blues stuff, I can’t tell what fingers you’re using for what, strumming and fretting and you aren’t explaining anything seemingly surmising I know what you’re talking about. When you say “surely you recognize this” and take off on examples, even changing to different examples is n the middle of the examples, I’m clueless. Judging by the others comments it’s me, but is there somewhere I can go where they will explain this other stuff the way you did the scale? Also, you might want to rethink your position on only recommending gear you’d use. Most of us aren’t millionaire musicians and we’re lucky to have $200-$300 to spend on an instrument we may or may not stick with. I know I have no intention of spending $900 on a guitar until I’ve played several years and know I’ll stick with it and I’ll have to be darn sure I’m committed for a lifetime before I’m going to spend $4,000 dollars. I’d like to hear your opinions on budget guitars even if you won’t recommend them. Thanks, I appreciate your teaching style and enjoy watching you, but for we beginners who are seriously older than you, we need a lot of handholding😁
