In one of his books, Green said he only performed this role twice in his career. But he's got the difficult patter nailed down cleaner than anyone else I've heard.

The Sorcerer was not a success in its day and has seldom been revived. But this song is the most challenging tongue twister after "Ruddigore".. "I shall go at once to Roderick"

Martyn Green vs John Lamb Reed. The challenge; pattern song singing. The judges; Dana Carrey, Sir John Gielgood, and Michael Dorn. Who wins?

@@LeonoraBassisty104 Regarding "the Sorcerer" neither did the Cockney accent on recordings. Peter Pratt did. The shop is in the City of London. thoughthere is no seventy in Simmery Axe (low-class for Saint Mary Axe. This Alistair Cooke programme is a treat. One or two o. t. t. bits. Unlike the D'Oyly Carte I wouldn't have allowed the scenery climbing. I don't know about the car mime. Gilbert is meant to have said to Grossmith's "It would raise a laugh, Mr. Gilbert." "So it would if you sat on a pork-pie!" I agree and underplay (it's funnier) as Green seems to do mainly. There's one common error with the meaning of "You throw up your hand." In context it means your hand of cards!

@@richardduployen6429 oh thank you I didn't knew that, I am quite a newbie to G&S and the fact that I am not from an Anglo-Saxon country is sometimes an obstacle to discover G&S more. I haven't listened to Peter Pratt in patters songs yet, only Reed, Green and Lytton. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with me Gilbert & Sullivan is truly the thing I love in the world (Also Sullivan's other works such as the Lost Chord or the Irish Symphony.

IMO John Reed won in singing the songs as intended by Sullivan and tended to sing them faster. But Martyn Green was the better overall comic, with brilliant improvs and more impeccable in diction.

I don't care about the judges. I saw both John Reed and Martyn Green perform, and Mr. Green will always have my heart.
