Question. Can you mix species of compost worms together?
The answer.

Yes, you surely can I believe it's a great idea. I never really go for monoculture of any form and they all perform a little differently so it's a great idea.
I have lots of species living together, even European Night Crawlers and Africans with them all living in harmony. That's in my Hungry Bin, which I really dig!

All my bins except one are a mix of compost worms. My "worm cafe" is full of red wigglers. Many of the worms were caught wild or from other people's compost and manure piles so I've probably got heaps of different species. As Australia has over 1000 worm species, don't ask me what they are 😊 Keep up the good work Marty!

I would guess a lot of people dont keep mixes and therefore dont talk about it because they like to see the individual species, basically like to nerd out on worms. It seems to me the people who use mostly a mix are larger scale farmers such as yourself. It definitely makes sense though to keep a mix, it's like having different kinds of workers at your factory. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Marty…. Thanks HEAPS for your guidance as I LOVE my achievements in Worm Farms and Worm Teas…..!.!.! BUT I have noticed many Worm Farmers don’t care much for LEACHATE…..,?!?! I am a 73 year old widower and have always loved my lawns and gardens, considering that I grew up in Surry Hills Sydney (where MOST back yards were concrete)…. Anyway champ the question that I think needs a bit of ‘explaining’ is about ‘Leachate’….. it tends to get a bit of a bagging but what ‘I’ have found to be worthwhile is that I keep my Leachate and once O tend to make my Worm Tea I utilise that Leachate by mixing it about 30% into the brew which I believe makes the Worm Tea a “100%” TPO BREW….!?!?! What are your thoughts champ….?!?!? Larry Hinds, from Bateau Bay NSW….!.!

The stuff that drips slowly for days is leachate,,it's the leaching of waste. But when you water a farm just like I teach in the worm wranglers members are you get a type of tea. It works wonderfully. But you know if it's working for you, forget all the online stuff, I completely ignore it these days. The ultimate is oxygenated worm casts,,with organic sugar if you have it.

Great topic! I do believe I've been asking you about this recently. It's good to know you can and probably should keep mixes. I think long term I want to do both but starting out I need to grow my red wiggler population. Seeing that this was a year ago, do you have any updates on your African Nightcrawler (ANC) population?

Have you ever come to someone's home site and help them actually establish food gardens and composting/worm farming? I've had so many fails and unanswered questions and confusion, when I'm sure that if you had it right from the outset, the whole thing would be easy .. where exactly are you? I'm considering moving to Queensland or northern NSW for a little rural plot, or semi-rural .. and get as self-sustainable as possible, maybe with a tiny home or two on the land where a few people can contribute their different skills, etc .. My main questions are .. where exactly are you in Qld, and do you direct people with establishing gardens first-hand? thanks Marty

Hi Catherine I am on the Mid North Coast of N.S.W and I do consulting. I am currently consulting for a local restaurant to become more sustainable and grow their own food. My main objective is my online organic gardening for beginners and selling my compost to the locals. Other than I don't have any more free time. Thanks for watching. All the best for your dream farm. Zophobas morio is a species of darkling beetle, whose larvae are known by the common name Superworms, King Worms, Morio Worms or simply Zophobas. Superworms are common in the reptile pet industry as food I have this same question! I would like to breed them for my reptile and wondered if i could add them to my red wiggler compost. Im wondering if they will overtake my vermicompost eventually and outbreed my wigglers or eat more food than they would
