Superb Recital of one of the Famous Krithi of Thyagaraja Swamigal ! Just Academic Interest ! Maru balka kunna Sri Ranjini Ragam 22nd Karaharapriya Janyam Adi Talam Thyagarajar Krithi This krithi as per my information was composed in Abheri. Musicians started singing/playing this in Sriranjani only from the first half of last century. Tyagaraja as an intimate devotee, asks Rama why he was not replying him. But soon he was happy to realize that Rama was in his heart only.He makes a fervent appeal to SrI rAma to respond to his pleas. P mArubalka kunna vEmirA mA manOramaNa Why don't you reply me, Oh my beloved Rama. AP jAracOra bhajana jEsitinA sAkEta sadana Did I worship characterless and dishonest persons, Oh Lord of Saketa. C dUra bhAramandu nA hrdayAravinda mandu nelakonna dAri nerigi santasilli naTTi tyAgarAjanuta I thought your abode Saketa is far away Now I realize that you are in my heart only I am happy, Oh Lord of Tyagaraja. Gist:- One who adorns the heart of Sita! Why should you not condescend to give me a reply to my persistent appeal? O Lord of Ayodhya! Tell me if I have not been meditating on you, worshipping you and praying to you only. Have I sung praises of rich unworthy men? I have realized that you are everywhere just as you are in my heart. The path is now clear to me and I shall follow it gladly. A gentle word from you will however buttress my faith in you and in the path I propose to follow unwaveringly. Comment :- charana can be translated in two ways -(1) this whole phrase can be taken as an adjective of ‘dAri’ - ‘O Lord praised by that tyAgarAja who is exulting having known the method in which You are established at once, far away and right in my heart’; (2) taking ‘dUra bhAramandu nA hRdayAravindamandu nelakonna’ - as an epithet of the Lord - ‘One who is established at once, far away and right in my heart’ and connected to ‘tyAgarAja nuta’. However, the first version seems to be more appropriate. Sri Ranjini Ragam :- A raga having six notes in the ascent as well as the descent (Shadava), with symmetrical tetrachords, is Sriranjani. It is known to please goddess Lakshmi and ushers in prosperity and auspiciousness. The notes present in this raga are Sadja, Chatusruti Rishabha, Sadharana Gandhara, Suddha Madhyama, Chatusruti Dhaivata and Kaisiki Nishada. The Pancama is eschewed in this scale making it more interesting, the beauty of the raga shining forth when the phrase MD, culminates with a little gamaka at the nishada. Sriranjani has several allied ragas including Abhogi and Bagesri. These ragas are different in their own striking way, but to an untrained ear these scales may sound very similar. While in Abhogi the Nishada is eschewed, Bagesri is a different ball-game altogether, the occasional Pancama appearance, the Rishabha occasionally being skipped in ascent, all contributing to a very different flavour, predominantly North Indian. Sriranjani is, however, a typically South Indian raga, as authentic as idli-sambar. The Classical kritis in Sriranjani include ‘Sogasuga’, ‘Marubalka’, ‘Brochevarevare’, ‘Bhuvini Sasudane’, and ‘Sariyevvare’ of Thyagaraja, ‘Sri Ramachandro’ and ‘Ni Sati Deiva’ of Dikshitar, and ‘Ini Oru Kanam’ of Papanasam Sivan. Dikshitar’s compositions are usually in Sanskrit, the aforementioned piece ‘Ni Sati’ being a Telugu piece, a rarity. ‘Kanavendamo’ of Gopalakrishna Bharati is a philosophical piece in this raga. Sriranjani adds pep to any kutcheri and is usually sung at thepoorvangam (first half) of concerts.
