As probably the biggest James Brown fan ever, I never liked Marva Whitney's voice (or Vicki Anderson's), and this performance is not very good at all.

Yes it's age and sickness that caused her voice to deteriorate, also the sound quality is poor. But on the other hand James Brown said that Vicki Anderson was his best funk singer. James Brown would never have Marva Whitney in his entourage, if she wasn't suited to his funk style. We talking about a perfectionist in James Brown!

@@harolddottin10 James Brown is my all time favorite entertainer since I was 12 years old in 1968. I saw him over 100 times in concert and I met him a few times but some of the crap that he said was just ridiculous. He could say 1,000 times that Vicki was the best singer and I would just shake my head in astonishment. Vicky Anderson was as bad as Marva Whitney as far as screeching and not sounding very good. Both sounded like chalk on a blackboard. Lyn Collins was his best female singer that he released a lot of records with and Martha High was the best pure singer of all.

@@harolddottin10Another thing about James Brown is even though he was an innovator and he created funk and he had a huge ego, he was also could be extremely insecure and he didn’t want anyone in his entourage that might even remotely give him any competition. That’s why he never got really great singers that could challenge him. Lyn Collins was excellent but she was very limited in her vocals and he never had Martha High sing much on records probably because she has such a good voice. But she didn’t have a lot of charisma. Same thing with Bobby Byrd. Bobby was a decent singer but really didn’t have much stage prescience or charisma either.

@@PaulDA2000 I know what you're saying Paul he did that to the men not the women. word was out from many acts including Bobby Womack That bobby Byrd could have outdance James Brown but he was held under wraps! Bobby Byrd was a strictly a funk singer not that great at ballads and so was most of the women.
