Marvel Legends HASLAB GALACTUS Fantastic Four Action Figure Review

The Engine of Vengeance Ghost Rider Haslab was an embarrassing way to learn a lesson. This Haslab seemed much more reasonable considering the Sentinel was only moderately disappointing. Will this one be able to prove its worth or will it just be a giant run-of-the-mill Marvel Legends figure with some lights?

Strange that he has better knees and ankles than neck, elbows and shoulders. Galactus isn't doing Riverdance, but he will gesture a lot with his arms and moving his head seems important too? This character usually looms. That means he looks down on what he's going to snack on. He reaches out with his arms and hands, those are his most expressive parts...

I think it was priced okay. The biggest problem I have is that for such a big figure the articulation in most parts is so lacking still. The details are in the mold but could be better as well for paint wise. The included figures are mediocre and reused. This is pretty much my last purchase for the line. From this point on I'll just be getting the ones that really stand out. I have everything else I've ever wanted.

agree. But, based on all the conversations I had with Hasbro. Whenever it cost them a little more, they "have" to price up a lot. So, the ML team actually mean to keep the price low and let the buyer decide to custom or not. Their company just have a much higher profit margin than others.

Hi Anthony, long time no comment… I’ve been away for around 3 months, from both watching your reviews and collecting action figures. I had a sudden career change, I’m now a part time freelance graphic designer but a full time art teacher. Because of it I had to move to a new city 500km away from my hometown, that and my new job implied a lot less free time but I’m now back to my old KZbin watching habits and my most loved action figure collecting hobby. As per usual I 100% agree with your critics. A premium action figure needs: premium materials, premium hardware (ratchets, swivels, ball joints, etc), premium sculpt, premium paint and premium engineering. Unfortunately this Galactus seems to be premium in price only. Maybe you noticed that there is no “…premium gimmicks…” in my list and that is because I think action figures bought for display purposes don’t need voice or light gimmicks, as a matter of fact they won’t benefit from any kind of electronic gimmicks. It’s simple math, ask yourself the following question. How many times are you going to use those light gimmicks after your figure is displayed? Now compare your answer to the following sacrifices implied by the use of electronic gimmicks in action figures. The price will go up, the eyes will become dead when turned off, the figure needs to have more hollow parts to allow for the electronics to run inside which will negatively affect both the sturdiness and the articulation of the figure. Do you think turning the lights on 2 times a year is enough to earn all those sacrifices? I definitively don’t. Merry Christmas and thanks for the review Anthony.

Excellent review as usual Anthony. I think this haslab is slightly overpriced, but I could justify purchasing it unlike the Engine of Vengeance. Now, had the Silver Surfer had the same metallic finish as the Walgreens, along with magnetic feet and board, Korg should have had a wash and alternate fist hands, and Frankie Raye should have had a more metallic finish, and Galactus should had sound effects, then I would say the price would have been completely worth it. Still, I'm very satisfied with Galactus overall and I'm glad I bought it. I don't care about the Doom head, would have preferred another herald instead.

I think the price is fine. Big figure, 3 smaller figures, 1 of which is an all new sculpt. It's not terrible, not a steal either, it's fine for the price. The Doom head was an okay addition. I don't care about it, but it is also the only way an accessory like this was going to be made. Sure, we could have gotten a 4th figure, but the point of the tiers is to enhance the main project, which the Doom head attempts to do. I'd ha e been fine without it, but I'm not mad it exists either. It was an attempt to get people to buy 2 though.

This is my personal opinion and I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison or not, to be honest, but I can't really justify the price of these figures after having purchased the Ultimate Deadpool from NECA. That figure was around $125-$130 when I got it and it's the best thing I have ever got, lol. It's big, sturdy, comes with a lot of accessories, decent paint and many display options. It's really fun. I can't really see the value of this Galactus for how much it costs. It's also thanks to these huge NECA figures that I can't see how the Engine of Vengeance was worth $350 in Hasbro's greedy eyes.

Question 1: I feel the price was okay, if it was any higher priced I doubt I’d have backed it however. I really wanted a Galactus, so with what he does and how he looks to me, I’m almost two weeks into owning my copy and I haven’t had buyer’s remorse, yet. Question 2: I was on the fence about the Doom head, I was psyched for it as a fan of the character. I like it in person, if the figure overall was less costly I’d have easily bought one for the Galactus head and the other body for the Doctor Doom head. Question 3: Silver Surfer’s purple effects are something I didn’t think I’d like much seeing it in person. I’d have preferred yellow, but this works nicely for me. Question 4: A variation on the lights would’ve been awesome. I agree about the articulation, I am pretty hesitant to move the legs, raising his arm a certain way had made his blue shoulder armor or collar separate as well. I have the same problem. I’m not expecting some spider-man articulation but yeah, feels limited as hell. Also, installing his antenna had to have been one of the most nerve wracking experiences I’ve had with a figure. I’ve been worried about him falling a few times, he’s too damn expensive for me to be fine with him taking a fall, so I got him on the ground for now. I’m still quite happy with getting him, I regret passing up the sentinel for a while at first, I’m glad I didn’t skip on this beast of a figure. A switch for the lights would’ve been nice, it stays lit up for about 3 minutes.

I understand your thoughts about articulation, I think the upper body is more important than the lower body for galactus. He makes most of his moves with his head and his arms which has the least range of motion with this figure. This figure could be the best if only the upper body had better articulation.

I absolutely LOVE this figure. To me it is the best Marvel Legends ever. For three main reasons.. 1) the characters itself. I’m subjectively drawn to a great Galactus so I’m blown away to finally have one. 2) the scale is perfect. The figure matches the comic stats perfectly. Classic Galactus was drawn big but not gigantic all the time. 3) he looks amazing and moves just fine for the character. Aside from a little more head articulation he can hit every pose I need from this guy. He looks accurate to the comics so I don’t believe he needs more paint. This guy is a 10/10 for me. Much better than the Sentinel.

@@fabstv3968 No, he's definitely not anywhere near that big. I think the Haslab is still not in scale, but even the comics aren't consistent with it, so having him building-size compared to a 6 inch figure in the same series is good.

@@fabstv3968 nah Galactus’ standard height is 28’9” so a 32 inch Galactus is perfect for 6.25 scale. Of course Galactus can become any size he wants so he’s sometimes drawn way bigger but he was roughly this size in “The Coming of Galactus”, “ the Trial of Galactus”, Fantastic Four #243, and the entire Secret Wars. I highly recommend reading all those essential Galactus appearances.

It is overpriced, it looks nice, but they really needed to add more paint apps, for both galactus and the heralds figures, and either drop the light features or make it more practical, to be fair, unlike the engine of vengeance, and to a certain degree, the sentinel, I think crowdfunding was the only way we would get a figure like this

My only issue is that Galactus is very top heavy. It’s an extremely great figure. However, a proper metal doll stand solved that problem nicely. I got it from Mercari with all tiers for less than the original price and by selling off Surfer and Morg, I was able to technically reduce the cost further.

I have the 2007 Hasbro surfer and board, I compared it to the one that came with my Galactus. The boards are the same molds except the 2007 is chrome. I think I like the 2007 surfer figure better because it's thinner and the head looks waaay up.

Haven't finished the review, but based on its shelf presence alone, id say its well worth the price. Granted, I mainly collect/build model kits, different pricing/expectations aside, the closest I can think of to this Galactus would be the HG Neo Zeong. Its roughly the same size, you can't really pose it much and its obviously an unpainted kit, and it still retails for over $300. So based on my personal expectations for a figure like this, id say yeah. Its well worth it just for its visual impact alone.

It was kinda worth it for me. Galactus is my second favorite character next to Doctor Doom (funny enough I didnt want that extra head at all).This was kind of a dream figure for me. Also, I get this is a ML figure, but the old 3.75 Marvel Universe figures look great with him and make him look huge(er?).

I have never collected marvel legends but I bought my first one on Tuesday. I got the Controller wave Iron Man for $15 from the target app. If I had the money, I definitely would try and get this because I think it's a pretty good value with a massive figure, 3 regular figures, and accessories.

Looking back at both the Sentinel and Galactus, Giant Man seems to be a far better figure than either as it won't be hampered by electronics and seems to have the range of a RYV Spider-Man or better. It has a texture all over and will have shading. Giant Man seems like it will actually be able to look down.

As much as I everyone likes a hefty figure (to fool themselves into thinking it’s worth more) that heft comes at the price of practicality. If the articulation wasn’t so limited you would still have to work out a way for him to maintain any kind of “dynamic” pose without him toppling over. It seems to me that this figure has a severe case of slightly posable statue, not accomplishing either role, action figure nor statue, in the slightest.

This is the only Marvel Haslab I've backed, and I generally think they delivered a better product than the Sentinel. I think aside from the Surfer, tiers should have been more effects and general display options for the main offering. I would have liked for it to have come with like Planets to hold, or smoke/energy effects to clip onto it, blast effects that can pair with figures in the line. I don't love the Doom head, I enjoy the faceplates and they could have added even more for fun. More paint is definitely the biggest criticism. I don't think Galactus needs to get into Spiderman poses, but if it hits the poses it needs then its fine enough.

Great review, as always, Anthony. The scratches on the shoulders alone make me glad I didn't get this, never mind the truly mediocre bonus figures, none of which is worth more than $20. Have you ever considered reviewing a Valaverse Action Force figure? I got some recently and I feel like for $34 per figure they are delivering the quality Hasbro wants us to think we're getting with Marvel Legends and GI Joe Classified. I'd love to see you take a look at any of their figures. Just a suggestion.

I think the biggest issue was the tiers, they should all have came with pinless joints, better paint jobs, good accessories and the doom head should have been another figure. Galactus should have had better paint as well.

It's big, it's got a great sculpt, it has minimal paint, it has mostly standard articulation with limited neck and shoulders. The figure is okay. Just okay. For the price, I wanted to be blown away. I wanted shoulder sockets, great movement at the top and bottom of the neck, soft rubber chest for movement. It should have had 3A Transformers-level movement. . .. .. . . . .. . . . It's okay, but I'm far from impressed.

Personally, I justify the price point a bit by separating the additional figures from the main one. To me, Morg is close to a deluxe figure for $38. Silver Surfer and Nova are easily $25 each, possibly $30 given the effect stand, but let's say $25. That makes Galactus closer to $312 as a stand alone. $312 for a 2' 8" figure with electronics isn't awful. It's not great, but it's not awful. The figure could certainly have been better without increasing the price, like the head articulation being able to let him look down. However, I think the figure serves it's purpose. Most people will find a pose they like and build a display around it, rarely reposing him.

I think its worth the price in the sense that you don't regret having something like this in your collection after getting it. But you brought up a ton of good points and how many areas they skipped out on is definitely disappointing. A statue with poseable arms would've been equally sufficient for the standard standing pose/holding of the other characters pose and if that could've shaved off a couple of hundred bucks it would've been the way to go if that was an option.

To me, the lack of a normal articulation for the head and the arms are absolutely unacceptable, but also, the fact that he can’t move his legs all the way forward is also a big bummer. One might want to sit him, like he’s sitting on his throne or something, looking down to his small servants. But, he can’t sit, he can’t look down. What a disabled figure.

I would agree with your score of 7/10, yet I have to say I am glad I bought it. While over priced, it looks good on the shelf and is far better than the Engine of Vengeance they have just offered. As I didn't have a Silver Surfer, and the price for that was, and still is, around the £100 mark it added a little incentive. I have commented previously, Hasbro are pushing their luck on the price of figures, and Haslab’s should not be a thing. On the whole however, I have no buyers remorse.

I've got to say, now that I see the two side by side, I am REALLY disappointed in the Surfer we got here. You'd think it was the one that was released in stores and that the Walgreens one was what we got with this limited and expensive backing. If you look at the arms, the silver on them looks different than the torso. On its own it's fine but I think it really sticks out next to the other version. Shortly before Galactus was announced and the Walgreens figure was more than I could spare I caved and made a custom Surfer of my own. It's not as nice as that first figure of course, but I wasn't expecting it to actually look BETTER than the HasLab one. I really think they could have made this version worth it with a unique color scheme, maybe some kind of galactic effect since those have been pretty alright imo. But oh well. At least I now have a board and flat palm hands for my custom, that was all he needed.

Question of the day: It’s a little tricky for me to answer honestly. I don’t own the figure, so I’ll base my thoughts on what I have seen of the figure. Sculpt wise and size wise I feel are amazing, but the paint is severely lacking and the articulation is pretty weak. In other words, no it is not worth the price. IMO, a figure can have some of the best sculpt work on it, but without any paint, that sculpt work becomes almost completely pointless if it doesn’t have anything to help bring it to life.

Hi anthony , there is a ultrsman figure thats big and i think is the same ballpark in termo of price , it is the sh figuarts dynamation ultraman , the eyes light up and the articulation is like a figuarts , and if ultraman is not your thing they have a Eva 01 in the same line , and both are gigantic , one more thing the rival clans ninja in clear plastic is a cool look , you should have a option to buy it like a predator camo whit lighting .

​@@AnthonysCustomsthey are not as much, what i am saying is like they could have find a way emplemente batter articulation besides the size , in theory the ultraman and Eva that are more complex in terms of articulation, i liked the way that the galactus turns out but its can be a little better for the price. I think he should have been taller an made harness and klit should been done in ideal dyed leather for price maybe a greater then 1/8 in thickenss high grade rubber at the least. or they should lowered the price by 75 to 100 $

All good points. I didn’t back this one, mainly due to space. The Sentinel already takes up a chunk. The plastic scratching, imo, is unacceptable. Not on such an expensive figure. Also, my Sentinel has zero of the issues everyone talks about. I pose him up, play around with him for pics. Though, he mostly stands by my seat so I can randomly tap his chest like a big kid. I don’t even know where I’d put Galactus lol He’d have to stand in the corner of my bedroom like a kid in time-out. I think these HasLab figures should come with a ton of paint. But they don’t and it’s disappointing. I don’t think Galactus is worth it. I don’t know that I’ll back another HasLab. I guess it depends. I’m more an X-Men person than FF. Now if they did some crazy ass Devil Hulk…I might jump on that.

After getting burned over the floppy Sentinel, I’ve given up on Haslab and to a large extent Marvel Legends. Watching this review and seeing the Ghostrider car preview, I know I made the right decision.

You don’t even have to cut completely. Instead of a stupid sensor gimmick, just put traditional LEDs and batteries in the chest and head. Way cheaper and would allow for articulation
