Hi Kurtis! I'd say Marvel's complete/epic collection sized books are my favourite way of reading comics-- I can really sink my teeth into them and they're easier to hold than something like an omni. As someone who grew up on 2000s/2010s Marvel, I'm so excited by the future of the Modern Era Epic line. It'll be a great chance for me to get round to reading some runs where the complete/ultimate collections are out of print! Here's some of the eras I'd love to see in the Modern Epic line: Fantastic Four Jonathan Hickman Fantastic Four Mark Waid/Mike Wieringo Amazing Spider-Man Big Time era Dan Slott Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's Ultimate Spider-Man run Cullen Bunn and Gabriel Hernandez Walta's Magneto run Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's Old Man Logan You and Omar's videos are a great resource for someone like me who loves following Marvel's latest epic releases, so just wanted to say a big thank you!

Thanks for the overview, Kurtis! It's a helpful primer and I'll be sharing it on socials. Still hoping we get Runaways in Modern Epics, I think that title would fit the format perfectly. I'd also like to see Silk in Epic, the G. Willow Wilson and Saladin Ahmed Ms. Marvel comics, as well as, whilst it would only be a single volume, Cullen Bunn's Fearless Defenders (I could be wrong but I think that has only ever been collected in skinny trades).

The problem with the “modern era” branding is that it dates the book. Some of these modern runs are almost 20 years old now, so how exactly does that track with someone buying them now, or say 10 years from now and expecting a more contemporary style? A collected editions department needs to be foreword thinking in this regard and endeavour to make their branding and trade dress timeless. They should have just stuck with the standard epic branding, or instead enforced a definitive endpoint for the epic era and committed to the complete collections post cut-off.

If Marvel wants to call this period Modern forever and the call the next period something different, they could do that. “Modern design” refers to the 1950s. “Modern music” is compositions from the early 1900s. “Modern Art” is stuff from the late 1800s. Eras after these are called Post-modern and the same thing could happen to comics as well.

@@epicmarvelpodcast Fair point. I would argue though that the layman who a lot of these collected editions are targeted towards won’t think of it that way. They’ll just see the modern insignia and expect a modern story. Aside from my personal issue with labels like “post-modern” (which would imply that it is now the new modern and the era preceding it now ceases to be modern. Hence why I would dispense with that terminology entirely), there is the issue that the “modern age” for comics began in the mid 80s with people like Miller and Moore; an era the epic line is already firmly entrenched in without the modern branding. So I guess their classification of what is modern or not is a bit arbitrary. Honestly I’d just eschew any attempt to delineate distinctions between eras and just collect these all under one epic line. A small gripe though, as the branding is not super noticeable and at least the trade dress is still consistent with the rest of the books.

I only have the Spider Gwen Modern Epic collection, and don't like it or the direction Marvel has went in the the past few decades. I am just buying the Epic Collections from the 1960s -1993. That is the Marvel Universe I grew up with, and there is more than enough classic stories to last my lifetime.

Lots of great stories came out until the mid-2010s though. Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four-Avengers-New Avengers saga, culminating with Secret Wars (2015) is arguably some of the best Marvel has ever put out.

As we continue to get these, I more and more feel like these aren't really being made with the same ethos or care that the Epic Collection name has always meant - it feels very much like that new announcement that OHCs are going to be omnibuses from now on; just use the name of a format people like with no regards for why people like it. Outside of my constant complaining about the spine colors and the numbering system, all of these books save New Avengers (and maybe SM/DP - it's the only one I don't have yet) is missing important content. Spider-Gwen needs the Spider-Verse arc, that Loki run is missing the Thor events that its early stages are intimately tied to, Guardians of the Galaxy without the Annihilation stories is a disappointing collection. They don't feel like these are being assembled with the intention of creating a definitive, comprehensive format to read these stories and characters in the same way that the Epic Line had been up to this point - they feel like rebranded trades. Which I guess is exactly what they are, but I'm disappointed all the same - especially as someone who skews a bit younger than the rest of the facebook group, because this is the era I grew up reading, so I'd love to have seen the same love given to this material. I hope these early ones are just growing pains, and we see them grow and evolve into something a bit more involved and cared for as we go. Also goes without saying, but great recap Kurtis - I'm looking forward to them getting all of Agent Venom out there, plus the Brubaker Cap books.

They definitely need to do something about the events. They can't expect Epic Collection buyers to go out and pick up an omnibus to fill in the gaps.

Honestly, I don't think a Spider-Gwen Epic would profit from having the entire Spider-Verse story in it. She barely does anything plot relevant, almost all of her conversations are one panel "Whoa, you're dead in my universe" "Well in my universe you're the one who's dead" dialogue. If anything I'd include the one Spider-Verse Team-Up story she co-stars in. Apart from that the only major things she does is babysit Silk (and all of that is really more about Silk and not at all about Gwen personally. She's more like a suporting character to a suporting character) and I guess have a "let's not feel bad about our mutual deaths" convo with Peter that lasts like two panels. A context page between Edge of Spider-Verse 2 and the solo series saying "Gwen was recruited by Spider-UK into a multiversal spider-army and helped save the multiverse from the inheritors" would be more than enough for me. Re-reading Edge 2 and the first issue of her solo series, it's not like it's brought up a lot either. The thing with events is that they tie into so many characters' stories, you'd end up reprinting them a lot and I think that would turn people off from the line to some degree. If Spider-Gwen in Spider-Verse is your bar for an event being important enough to be included you also end up having Spider-Verse in the SM 2099, Spider-Woman and Silk Epic Collections and at that point Marvel either just reprints Spider-Verse five times in its entirety but with a different series name each time, or they only include the issues of Amazing (160p), at which point one third of five volumes would be double-dipping. And that would really annoy spider-fans, understandably.

I’ve gotta be honest, I like the concept of the epic collections. But one problem I have with the series is how they present Jack Kirby’s artwork. The coloring on it it’s just feels off, I think it has to do with how they color backgrounds, because Kirby rarely drew those, it just looks obnoxiouly bright. Another problem with all the epics I have is the paper, it feels like cheap magazine paper and the gloss just makes look cheap, it needs toothy feel some more yellows for Kirby‘s work to be readable. It’s a shame, they make it such a premium to read these classics comics the way they were intended.

Yeah, there are so many factors that contribute to the way comics looked back then, a big one being pulpy newsprint that allowed the ink to soak in. You can’t get that kind of paper anymore even if you tried. Modern newsprint doesn’t even act that way. Perhaps they should try to compensate in the hues they are using, but they have their methods. It is what it is. You can either reconcile with your own attitude or just not have that stuff in your collection.
