More realistically, in that scene he meant he knew Iron Man because he was literally connected to his soul. After obtaining the soul stone, he could literally feel every beings soul in the entire universe. There was actually a major tone shift in his character after obtaining the soul stone because once he obtained it, he could feel the fear that everyone was feeling due to his actions.

It had nothing to do with Tony’s “discovery of a new element”. When all his other options failed, & Thanos decided to “do it myself”, he began thoroughly researching the stones. During his preparations, he investigated the whereabouts of each Infinity Stone, including their current keepers, which were the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., & Vision, the Asgardians, the Masters of the Mystic Arts, the Collector, & the Nova Corp. Having amassed all the knowledge he could, Thanos began his quest to obtain the stones & finally “bring balance to the universe”. Because Thanos spent about 3 years learning about the stones, & those who had them, giving him the upper hand in Infinity War, because he could anticipate each move. In contrast, the final battle in Endgame, the Avengers had previously fought Thanos. They learned from their mistakes & how Thanos fights. 2014 Thanos, hadn’t battled them yet & had yet to collect any intel on them.

By the time he he got to Wakanda, where the rest of the Avengers were, he had the other 5 stones, & he used them to effortlessly blow through each Avenger. I think Thanos was surprised to find Tony on Titan, & that’s why he said his name. WRONG. When he blew up chitauri mothership, the nuke he used was from a S.H.I.E.L.D bomber, which was a STARK INDUSRIES product. A fraction of the missile shell with the word "STARK" must be remained intact for Thanos to discover. This is a continuity that Disney liked to maintain throughout the MCU. Other examples : 1. Did u know, tony never created a new element. When u look up the name of the element he found, he just made a vibranium particle. Which is why it’s glowing just like vibranium. At the time not many people new about vibranium either and it would make sense that Howard stark had plans to make more vibranium after cap’s shield. The reason Thanos knew Stark at that moment was because of his future self. The future Thanos (the one that used Pym and Stark technology for time travel) went back in time to warn himself of Tony Stark (who he viewed as the leader of The Avengers). That is why he kept saying he is "inevitable". It was a safeguard to insure his plans will always come to fruition, since he now knew that The Avengers had discovered time travel. He probably didn't go back in time personally but probably used Nebula to relay the information to a past Nebula. Thanos isn't dumb.

Okay, first off, that whole time travel thing is completely wrong because when you go back in time (in the MCU), you create a new timeline branch, therefore the Thanos they fought in the final battle in Endgame is not the same battle they fought in Infinity War And second off, in What If… Season 2 Episode 4, it is revealed that Iron Man is known universally for nuking Thanos’s ship in the first Avenger’s movie.

We actually explicitly know how he’s heard of Iron Man. The Avengers post credits scene is still canon. Thanos was told about the Avengers after the Chitari invasion, so it stands to reason he’d know who the Avengers were

One of the biggest flaws of Infinity War imo is that we never actually got any indication as to what the MCU Soul Stone can actually do, we can only guess based on what we know about the Soul Gem in the comics. But again, the post credits scene in the first Avengers movie is still canon, and we quite literally see Thanos be told about the existence of the Avengers. That’s how he learned who Tony Stark was

Or and hear me out on this one, Thanos is just prepared and has heared of the threads he is facing having heared probably two names in particular Tony Stark aka Ironman and Captain America given that both tend to be represented as leader figures for the heroes and the reason why they all gather in the first place. So if you are planning an attack and you are as smart as Thanos is you definetly want to know who the leaders of the oposition are in order to defeat them first having an easyer time of creating chaos on the enemys side and possebly a scattering or even surrender of the troops. It is a lot harder to fight if you don't got any hope left.

Theories 1) in the deleted scenes thanos says "I know your soul" so maybe the soul stone gives the user people's identity much like shinigami eyes 2) After Tony nuked one of Thanos's Chitaury army, Ebony Maw probably said something like "Sire, the person that attacked our ship wore armor more advanced than we expected from the beings in C58." And thanos went like "Investigate into this, child" 3) I mean Loki was working for Thanos and he got enough time to know about them, maybe he told Thanos.

It's obvious it has to do with Tony's IQ. Thanos says "You're not the only one cursed with knowledge." In Iron Man 3 one of the themes was Tony's panick attacks that had started. This was from the realization of going through the worm hole at the end of the Avengers seeing what he saw. A whole existence other than our own. At the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron this is once again played out when the Scarlett Witch is exploiting everyone's biggest fears. Tony sees the vision he saw in the worm hole but with the rest of the Avengers dead at his feet & Captain America going "You could of saved us." Thanos is the ultimate bad-a ss because of his high IQ & him being a ripped-a ss, shredded 10ft tall maniac. Tony has the same IQ & made suits to make him a physical bada ss. They are the same but seperate ends of the same spectrum. Again, the key phrase is Thanos saying "You're not the only one cursed with knowledge." It's pretty safe to say Thanos did his homework on the threats that laid between him & the infinity stones since 2 of the 6 were on Earth & Tony making Vision out of the Mind Stone.
