Yeah, Guardians of the Galaxy was always in the comedy genre and was produced as such. Gunn was known for his dark humor, they cast a sitcom star as the lead, one member is a talking raccoon, and another is a tree alien that keeps saying his own name. You can't play any of that straight. Gunn did nothing wrong.

It’s not “James Gunn” style comedy. It’s Joss Wheadon style comedy. A reporters first reaction to seeing a red hulk in the brand new world is literally to quip lol. Who did that kind of dialogue start with in the mcu? Cause it wasn’t James. Edit: I’m not saying who has better comedy between the two. The CGI in the Cap 4 trailer just felt very immersion breaking because it felt so contrary to real physics. And they need to stop with the "nanotech-helmets" it just doesn't look real. It would be nice to have a Marvel movie that's a bit more grounded and sincere, but it also needs to feel real.

I don't think comedy itself is the problem but instead it's the "copy and paste" style comedy that marvel and a Lotta other movies use nowadays. The jokes aren't clever or creative, they're run of the mill, expected, boring and almost formulaic. Bc of this copy and paste formula movies now generally don't have observational comedy like Seinfeld, dark comedy, slapstick, parody/satire or things like that

Marvel has had a problem with “humor” since age of ultron, they still don’t get how to write natural quippy banter, it comes off as forced and I almost can’t take their films/shows seriously if it feels like it’s written for 6 year olds. (The spider-man movies for example are the absolute worst of mcu humor) Comedy is subjective and I don’t want marvel to be the dark knight, but for once can’t they be respectful of the audience’s intelligence to not write something completely juvenile?

In regards to Spider-man, Proffessor Thorgi put it pretty well in his review of the 2018 game: Spider-man works better when he's telling a joke, rather than being a joke. Telling a joke is wisecracks, quips, etc. Being a joke is basically having a pie thrown in your face. I can't recall Tom Holland's Spidey doing that many quips in Homecoming (aside from the Avenger thugs) and I still can't believe that Far From Home didn't have him make ONE SINGLE joke about Mysterio's fishbowl. Instead, we got a lot of situational humor at Spidey's expense. No Way Home had some improvements, but even then, Andrew Garfield's Peter just stole the show when it came to one-liners. Insomniac's version of Peter definitely nails what Spider-man humor should be.

Bucky doesn’t want to replace Steve, he wants to see his legacy grow. Besides the fact that he’s essentially a relic of the past. If they called it avengers then everyone would critique it based on being another avengers movie, calling it an entirely different name gives it a freedom that it wouldn’t have if you linked it to the other title. Also the whole PR idea of it not connected to their past blunders, if it fails they just move on.

Ironically, for all you call it James Gunn humor, not only it predates James Gunn but also he actually wants his DCU to be diverse in tone. He acknowledges not everything can have the same tone; a Superman can be a lighthearted story, whereas a Swamp Thing movie should be a dark horror film, as he has explained. Meanwhile, people used to blame the MCU humor on Whedon if I'm not mistaken, because it was already happening in the first Avengers movie, it might have got worse after the success of Guardians, but the MCU was already using Avengers humor in their other movies since phase 2. The success of Ragnarok might have also thrown more fuel to the fire, which is ironic considering Love and Thunder was kinda a nail in the coffin for Marvel humor. Anyway, my point is that I not only think Gunn isn't to blame but also Gunn's DCU might be less likely to force the humor on all its movies and shows than the MCU itself.

4:30 yeah It even has the same color pallet almost as JG’s SS. Lol The whole mimic idea doesn’t stick. For me personally, Group films always have that dynamic, you’re seeing a cinematic trope repeated not a director’s shtick. The execution varies but it’s nothing new.

It's funny how they throw shade about how the 2000s superhero movies were embarrassed to accept the comic troupes and were too serious, but now they just make them into one big comedy or can't seem to have a story without slew of in a self-aware or self-referential joke

6:07 Bucky should have been cap, it's part of his character arc. That could have been used as a way for Bucky to redeem himself. It also sucks that they killed of Black widow because her and Bucky have a lot in common, there was potential to try adapt their relationship. It's just crazy how much Marvel has wasted Bucky as a character.

@svenkampen1647 Yes, I get it perfectly, the Red Hulk is stronger than them all. But Cap also has something that Batman does not have. For example, an indestructible shield and wings that easily cut metal. He also has the ability to fly over the sound barrier and launch drones with lasers and missiles. Therefore, if they play all these possibilities wisely, this could turn out to be one of the best action scenes in the MCU. At least I hope so.

You make some good points. I like Yelena's dark humor. With her past, it fits. I don't think Bucky belongs with the Thunderbolts*, looks like backsliding, to me. Especially after he was in a good emotional state after FaTWS. I've liked the trailers I've seen, so far, but have been avoiding CA:BNW's trailers. The new CA movies just doesn't feel right. I guess we'll have to wait and see how these movies turn out.

Personally I thought both trailers were mid. I am obviously going to see both movies, I just want Marvel Studios to move away from the comedic side in the movies (having comic relief isn't a bad thing, but going over the top with it like Thor: Love & Thunder can kill the movie) and focus more on high steaks of each story. Bring back tension and have the occasional dread. So I am fairly optimistic (although learning about the poor test screening for a Brave New World does have worried) they are (very) slowly going back on track.

@BlackThoughtTheOverLord
@BlackThoughtTheOverLord 11 күн бұрын
@Nitedawg1 Maybe I didn't totally articulate myself well. Why I was asking for change was in relation to the wider audience/normies. I have read Marvel & D.C comics for the best part 25 years, so I am going to watch comic book movies no matter what (I remember much of the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's there wasn't much a plethora of comicbook movies so when the boom started to take off I was excited and enthusiastic to see it). But the fact of the matter there has been drop off and people are getting tired of these films and I myself (whilst being a comicbook) can relate with some of the arguments. Like for me Thor: Love & Thunder and the depiction of Gorr The God Butcherer was a huge missed opportunity and didn't the character justice. And if you are even gonna nitpick or argue with me on that argument, I won't bother replying.

@Nitedawg1 Read Marvel & D.C comic books because A) the characters they created and B) because they are the biggest comicbook publishers out there (sure you have Dark Horse, Image, & Valiant). The reality is when you start getting into comics you are obviously going to start reading the two biggest publishers in comicbooks because they have the most recognisable characters (in England back in the '80's when I was young the T.V channels would show the 1960's Batman & Robin programme with Adam West as Bruce Wayne/Batman. I also remember watching a Spider-Man cartoon series that had Spider-Man, Ice Man and Firestar.

I think one of the biggest problems with the "James Gunn" comedy style is that people are trying to emulate him. The problem is theyre taking the wrong aspects of it, people see it as non-stop jokes and jabs and quips at each other when i dont think thats where James Gunn's biggest strength is. Where GotG really succeeded was in giving its 5 main characters distinct voices in the writing. Now, when looking at the Guardians, if you were to pull random lines of their dialogue, you could potentially know who is saying what just through the way they speak. Discounting Groot because he's obvious - Peter is often cocky, not the smartest but he has a big heart. He gets sincere dialogue but also tries to project an air of confidence and machismo. - Rocket is an aggressive character, often talks with spite and tends to lash out, he curses and yells much more than the others - Gamora, like Jester said, is the straightman of the group, always serious without much rook for joking, though occasionally might slip in a jab. She slowly grows more comfortable with the rest if the grouo but still retains a more reserved presence, never quite turning into a joker. - Drax is also extremely serious for the most part but his seriousness is dialled up to 11, serious to the point of comedy. his blunt, meat-headed nature is the source of his comedy. The problem I'm having with Thunderbolts and the past few comedic attempts is that if you took the jokes and dialogue from them, and gave it to other characters, it would often not feel even remotely out of place for them. But if you were to give Rocket a line of Gamora's dialogue or Peter a line of Drax's, you could easily tell it's not their normal way of speaking. It's prioritising jokes and quotable lines over actual character voices, and that's what my biggest issue with Marvel's humour is nowadays. They want to have lines that will be stuck in clips and compilations and reaction gifs, rather than have characters with individual personalities. James Gunn does James Gunn comedy well, hell he does Joss Whedon comedy better than Whedon, but a lot of people try to copy the jokes rather than the actual writing style

Also, another reason I think the connection to the characters might be more important than the humor itself is that good faith with the MCU isn't as high now as it was back in the peak of funny MCU. So people would be more receptive of humor back then because of that and also because one is generally more predisposed to receive it positively if it's from characters you already like. But if you're already more on the defensive or you don't have any pre-existing attachment to the character the humor is less likely to land. Not to mention if it's overdone very badly like in Thor 4 which basically ended Taika's future with the MCU basically. But again, the humor has been evident in the trailers and so far people doesn't seem to mind and we already know test screenings are leaning positive, so maybe, just maybe, it'll actually work out alright. Though knowing you, I could see not being to your liking even if it gets a pass overall 😅

I’m actually looking forward to Thunderbolts. Didn’t expect I would but the cast is terrific, the D23 trailer looked was tight & the audience test screenings apparently went very well. As to the MCU’s over-reliance on quips & one-liners I think that’s an unfortunate holdover from Phase I which was dominated by RDJ’s Tony Stark. Having Joss Whedon direct the first Avengers movie was obviously a factor, too. Here’s the thing: Robert Downey, Jr. is very, very good at using humor to balance pathos. Florence Pugh, who looks like she’s going to be first among equals in Thunderbolts* is pretty good at that kind of humor, too. So is Joss Whedon. Or at least he used to be good at it. There are Marvel characters like Spider-Man & Deadpool who are famously quippy. The problem arises when you have writers who aren’t good at writing humor trying to shoehorn it in for characters who aren’t known for being funny and/or turning everything into inappropriate slapstick: Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the worst offenders from the last few years. I’m onboard with Thunderbolts* so far. I didn’t expect to be & it’s still possible that Marvel will find a way to screw it up. I’m less enthusiastic about the new Captain America, which, by the way, looks to be a pretty dour affair.

I think the problem with Sam as Cap is that they tried to explore what having a black Cap meant and tried to be serious about it but Sam just wasn't that guy before. And since Steve already was serious Cap, they might have benefited from Sam being a different type of Cap, less straight and serious. Kinda how each Green Lantern is different, or how Wally West isn't the same as Barry Allen.
