I love it. Notice how there are actual benches, city owned and maintained benches, across the city? And these benches are not owned by the adjacent store or restaurants! The privilege of being able to sit down without buying products is widely available in Melbourne and not just limited to parks. It might seem like an odd thing to point out but it speaks volumes on the social values of the city. It shows there is value placed on recreation and community. In New York City for example there is a complete lack of publicly accessible benches without first making a purchase from a store. They prioritize profit and seek to limit the homeless population to desolate corners across the city. Hats off to Australia

Major recommendation: Take Degraves Lane off Flinders street (left at Flinders street instead of straight) and follow the lane ways and arcades through the city (right through the middle). You see beautiful architecture, bustling cafes, vintage stores, street art and galleries.

I visited from rural NSW in the early 80's, and experienced rudeness for the first ever time. It's probably worse now. Melbourne was rude and obnoxious at a time when Sydney was still actually friendly! Melbourne is reputed to become Australia's biggest city in 2030, but has acted like the biggest city for decades.
