If it's 53 years old it has to be a classic.

Marvin Gaye is one of the greatest vocalist of all time. Sad ending for a great artist.

One of the few singers who could sing without a microphone if he had to. A powerful voice gone to soon.

"sitting on the dock of the bay"! That is another classic smooth Vietnam era song. Highly suggested!

If you’d like to truly appreciate the artistry and vocal prowess Gaye possesses, seek out his a cappella version of this song. You should be able to find here on KZbin. His voice is amazing.

I Love the Way Norman Whitfield build the tension of this song. It was very radical at the time musically and Marvin Gaye gave a incredible rendition of the song. Gladys Knight and The Pips version came out first and did very well but this version was incredible and that's why it's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Library of Congress. That's Why Marvin Gaye is One of The Greatest Singers and Artist of All Time. R.I.P. Marvin Gaye (The Prince of Soul)

It was the soundtrack for underwear commercials in the 80s. That alone makes it a classic. Edit: I was so so soooo wrong. It was a commercial for California raisins. Confusing raisins with underwear could have unforseen repercussions.

There are 3 well-known versions of this song. I think it would be really cool if you reacted to all 3 and then chose your favorite version. (The Miracles were the first to record the song in 1966, but their version wasn't released until August 1968. It wasn't released as a single, and it didn't chart.) The first version to be released was in 1967 by Gladys Knight and the Pips. It went to #1 on the R&B Singles chart and #2 on the Pop Singles chart and shortly became the biggest selling Motown single up to that time. The Marvin Gaye version was the second to be recorded, in the beginning of 1967, but only the third to be released in 1968. It went to the top of the Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and overtook the Gladys Knight & the Pips' version of being the biggest hit single on the Motown label. Creedence Clearwater Revival made an eleven-minute version for their 1970 album, Cosmo's Factory. It didn't hit the charts until 1976 (due to a re-release) when it made it to #43.

This song reminds me of Vietnam. I wasn't in Vietnam. Must have been in a Vietnam war movie?
