At the time that the artist Marvin Gaye wrote the song, he felt the need to express the pain and tears that North American society suffers as a result of racial intolerance, police violence, carrying weapons, drug use and selfishness. He experienced firsthand the humiliations, physical abuse, psychological violence of his father. He was an artist with great sensitivity.

That's true. Berry and the label's executives didn't want Marvin to record a protest album due to them fearing that it would damage his sex symbol image. Marvin didn't like being a sex symbol and stood his ground. Berry came to his senses and released the single and album which became a classic but earned the label millions of dollars. Marvin also got the opportunity to continue writing and producing his own music

Pain. That's what's going on... "Hurt People, Hurt People" as the saying goes. Only through love and kindness can we even begin to heal, but most aren't ready, nor willing to be the first, except for a few, who constantly got to contend with all the hurt people who refuse to let good stuff remain good. I knew stuff was sick in this country on a deeper level the moment I heard a person say "they don't get to be happy if I'm not happy" Ever since then I woke up, and realized the truth all around me. I don't stay trying to be hopeful and kind because of an inner child's thought... But instead because I reject that "I'll hurt people because, I'm hurt, people" type of mentality. Even if I don't change the world, as long as I can make one person smile and not want to make a unaliving themselves joke, that's a win. It's enough. And I'm happy for it. I'll be honest, I'm not going anywhere with all this, but amongst all the comments, yours resonated with me, and I couldn't help but reply with my own answer. There's so much wrong, and no one truly knows how to solve it all, and unfortunately everyone nowadays think they know how, more than anyone else, just to end up adding to the problems and their complexity... So ima just do the only thing I know how, and that's making Life itself not so miserable to whoever I can find, and whoever is willing to have me. Hopefully it inspires growth, and healing, along with sharing that, but even if all it does is give them a smile, then that'll be enough for me, as atleast I contributed to someone's One Good Day. Anyways, sorry for the long wall of text, hopefully this helps, at the very least helps someone who is also discovering the song for the first time and reading comments right now like myself.

I was a young man when this album came out. " Whats Going On " I was in the Preverbal "Shit hole" at the time. A place called Viet Nam. Marvin was with me, not the man. But his music. I always felt at that time, as well as today. This was one of the most prophetic albums ever written. This is one of the songs from my favorite singer of all time. Marvin Gaye and my favorite album of all time "What's going on" This entire album is amazing from start to finish. On vinyl, it was a rarity, One of those rare albums you dropped the needle on, sit back and you could listen to every song from start to finish on side "A" without ever having to get up to pick up the needle and skip a song. Side "B" had some awesome tracks on it as well. The History behind this album was as equally as amazing as the Man himself. Mr. Marvin Gaye. In short, This album was Marvin's "Baby". Motown at the time, felt it was to out there ( Extemporaneous ) too political and it would not sell . Marvin wanted it produced. it was very near and dear to him. This led to Marvin leaving Motown. if you listen to side "B" 2nd track "Flying High In The Friendly Skies " In this song, listen closely, it is Marvin Gaye, describing his personal battle and experiences of his addiction to Heroin. Amazingly put to music and words. The album has other Great Songs. "Mercy Mercy me, "God is love". This album is truly an insightful walk through the mind and soul of the man, the artist, we all know as Marvin Gaye. Barry Gordy Believed it was too out there this album would not sell. Marvin left Motown and the album was produced and the rest, is music history. Marvin, you are truly remembered. Thank you Marvin, for being there for me. As I, a young man of 18, walked through the valleys, of the shadow of death. Rescate En Pace. Mr. Marvin Gaye. Semper Fidelis

Motown ended up produced and releasing "What's Going On", but the execs at Motown saw it as just a way to keep one of their biggest stars happy, so he would keep producing music for them. They expected it to be a total flop. Barry Gordy was leaving town, so he told another exec at Motown to tell Marvin that he had to redo the record, and that it wouldn't sell as it was. The other exec decided to release it anyway, but also expected it to flop. They were shocked at how well "What's Going On" did, and they never encouraged Gaye or their other singers to produce more music like it, even though it had great sales. Although "I heard it through the grapevine" is far more famous, I consider "What's Going On" to be one of the greatest albums ever created, but its message was far too subversive for the record companies. I don't think I ever heard it being played on the radio when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. I only recently discovered it on KZbin. I often wonder what else Marvin Gaye could have produced if he hadn't been so hooked on drugs and had more stability in his life. We would probably think about him in the same way that we think about John Lennon.

The sign of a prophet is a poet who writes about what he sees in his heart and soul about the future of humanity. Beloved Marvin was our prophet during that time. His voice is still relevant to people because he spoke about their issues with life, not just his love life or romance. There were many prophets in the music of the 70s. WE need to return to that to open the blind eyes, disconnected from their souls. Where we are going being closed off to one another is a very dark, destructive and lonely place.

This song was written and released by Marvin Gaye in 1971. That was 51 years ago. It topped the charts in almost every genre of music and around the world. Originally, it was written about a Vietnam vet coming home from war, but as the video shows, the narrative is still the same, but the sentiment still applies to so many people no matter who you are, TODAY! I miss this singer and man every time I hear his songs and those songs written about him. This video deserves more than 86k in likes. I heard so many people here said nothing has changed. Well, they are right. There are so many broken families, children growing up without their fathers or mothers. Believe me, nothing is going to change until people realize that the family is the backbone of society. Also, we as parents need to be an example to our children on how a good person should behave. And even more importantly, take our children to church and teach them about God's righteousness and love for humanity. There is a very good verse in the Bible, written by a very wise man, King Salomon. Proverbs 22: 6 (NKJV) "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Amen!

Ooh, you opened the Pandora's Box. True that! It's more tragic than amazing, though for anyone who believes most people are good, it should be amazingly sorrowful we have not beat all the Injustice, social and environmental, back into the deep reaches of the cave. Marvin spoke to us back then when we were very worried about the future and we've been trying ever since to not allow all that crap to carry through to now. Some things have improved, and we know so much more now, but other things have not improved or become worse even though we know better.

The Dear Reverend Billy Graham said, in one of his sermons where there were many Black Children of God in attendance, “Did you know that the man that helped Jesus carry the Cross, was a Black Man.” I’m not sure why, but that has stayed with me for Years. Just Respect for the Man I guess.

Sorry to hear this sad news. Know that you are not alone. There is an entire community of gals, who married for decades to a good man, are now grieving at him being gone. But he will.always be with you, living in your heart and watching over you. Bonds like that do NOT break. Ever. I send you hugs and thoughts of having had that good man by your side for so long. Peace be unto you.

It’s a shame Marvin isn’t alive his voice and music is timeless and complete art in its purest form
@raymondcortez63733 жыл бұрын
this song is so relevant today. Marvin Gaye was ahead of his time when he wrote this song. Not much has changed since the last 50 years. The country is still in debt, racism and hate is still there, political divide is at its peak. The war in Afghanistan gained us nothing. Opioids crisis is on the rise, the economic collapse due to the pandemic won’t be able to recover for another 10 years. Global warming is still a thing as we continue to ignore it that the north and southern Ice caps are melting away and there will soon be nothing left and polar bears will be extinct. Really though WHATS GOING ON?
@Joe_J-MT_Boy7 ай бұрын
When the ice caps are gone, those giant reflectors of the sun's energy will be no more. At that point, vast land areas will be uninhabitable by humans... and that will probably be the best thing to happen to the planet earth in a hundred thousand years. Not only will polar bears be gone, but we'll be gone, too.

The promise God gives His people here is extremely powerful and incredibly encouraging. If we apply this promise to our own lives, we can take heart. God has our back! No matter what our enemies have in store for us (and believe it: if you serve the cause of Christ, you do have enemies!) God has it covered. He tells us not to fear or be anxious because He holds us in his "righteous right hand." We are protected by His power and His might. Not only will He protect us, but He will punish those who come against us. They will be "shamed" and "dishonored" and will eventually perish. They will come looking to fight us, but they will not find us because God has taken care of the matter. How can we not serve such an awesome and mighty God?

I'm 48. White. European. But since I'm a child, I ve been listening to soul music. And Marvin Gaye. This is what made me. It took me many years to realise that I had a color. Black, white, for me, it was the same. So many black people inspired me, I owe them the best of myself. They built me. The fight for equality will never stop until equality. But I'm sure, we will get there. Let's love eachothers because we are just one marvelous brotherhood.

We need people like him. We are lost We hate each other everywhere. We can't walk the streets as women and children. My children ate always in my yard . They don't go anywhere without me. They are 25. 23 and16. I drive them everywhere. We are so cruel. I sleep with protection everyday so as to protect my children and animals at night when my husband is st work. My granny taught me this 50 years ago. She used to fight for us anytime our mothers were working and never allowed day offs earning 10.00. My Granny would wake up in the middle of the night and fight anything and anyone. We were untouchable poor as we were. Nobody touched us. Bless her soul. She died at ege age of 104. I was 48. We were so blessed to have her
