You don't need expensive trains to enjoy the hobby. These Marx's are just as fun. That silver one is a hauler. Nicely done Dave.
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah they are a lot of fun. And not expensive. Engines for $10 and cars for $5 is budget railroading at its finest! I don’t think I had added weight to that engine yet either at the time of filming. It pulls a little better now with less slip on start up.

Nice to reconnect with an old time favourite of mine. The 'Commodore Vanderbilt' was the 1st electric engine when I was a kid in the 1940's. It was my older brother's and he eventually removed the shroud and ran the motor up steep grades to make it fly across the living room. Crazy stuff. I found one at a flea market in the 80's and still have it. Thanks for sharing this great train run, Dave.

The unpainted Marx pulls 17 or 18 cars plus tender. I’m impressed. The red one is not doing bad also. They seem to hold the tracks pretty good too. I would never thought these could run so well.😊

Your creativity and craftsmanship are unsurpassed. WATCHING THOSE TRAINS RUNNING AROUND THE TRACK WAS A LOT OF FUN! The Red Commodore Vanderbilt and matching passengers are terrific. The Blue Commodore and green passengers are a nice combo. And the Silver Commodore engine, pulling EIGHTEEN freight cars, which includes the tender, is AMAZING! Last but not least, the Marx steamer is always a favorite. All are GREAT -GREAT, -GREAT!
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! They are fun. It took a bit of fiddling before I could get all those cars to roll without derailing. I did have to add a bit of weight to the engines to get them to pull all those cars.
@johnknippenberg-LandmarkYards Жыл бұрын
Nice, Dave! I think I counted 17 tinplate cars including caboose, which could be a record for not derailing. 18 if you include the tender.
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I actually do not know what the record is for pulling Marx cars, I do know that the engines start to slip too much, even with added weight. I may have to try a double header sometime!

Amazing. This is REALLY interesting and unusual. I was so happy when I eliminated all post-1975 rolling stock from my layouts: I think the combination of restoring old stuff AND using older stuff as the basis of repaints is wonderfully rewarding--more so than any other aspect of model railroading I've encountered in the last sixty-five years or so (since my first and only Marx). This may be my favorite among all your videos (and that's saying a lot). I should stop here, but I'm going to go on and say that these trains really suit your layout well with the multi-levels of unimpeded (no switches) continuous running. Have no regrets if you decide to trade in your modern stuff for more tinplate. It looks beautiful.
@wayneantoniazzi2706 Жыл бұрын
I hear you! I've been doing repaints on Lionel post-wars with iffy exterior finishes and I'm having a ball doing so. I even redid an MTH generic 4-6-0 into a Susquehanna G-15 and love the way it came out.
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I actually would like to repaint a few of my Marx engines and a bunch of basic postwar Lionel’s I have. I’m sure once I actually start painting, I’ll get carried away and want to paint everything. I can’t sell the new stuff, I enjoy it too! But yeah, there is a lot of value to collecting painting and running the old stuff!
@DelHudson1 Жыл бұрын
That was cool seeing all 4 tracks running those vintage Marx trains. I suggest painting your stripped Marx loco Ford Focus ST yellow with a black bottom on the tender. Get your public service DAGryffyn logo printed out and put it on the tender. Make it your own. Number the engine the year you were born. Or you could just seal it with clearcoat and call it the silver bullet. lol. Fun stuff and thanks for sharing.
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
Great ideas! Yellow might be a bit much though! Haha. But a tender with my logo, very cool idea. Then I can do a caboose too. I have plenty of those.
@wayneantoniazzi2706 Жыл бұрын
@@dagryffynhobby I think DelHudson hit on something. Why not Public Service grey on the engine and tender with white highlights, kind of like a Public Service bus? Then the DAGryffyn logo centered on the tender. It'd be truly unique!

Glad to see someone else who has a similar fondness for Marx trains. They are fun to run. I find myself probably spending more time with my cheap old Marx than anything else. The 666 freight set was my first introduction to model railroading. It was my older brother's but I was the one who played with it and still have it to this day still running strong. I thought I had the coolest train set ever. I see you have got a lot of work done on Pikes Pink. Keep up the good work. Happy rails.

Yes, Dave, I must have about 20 Marx accessories from the 1950's - all working- and purchased for low prices - on my layout- just to depict the very same items that I had as a kid or that I remember being issued back in the '50's/'60's along with my Marx locomotives such as the 1666, 666, 400, etcetera that I run frequently along with my other brand names of O gauge.
@dagryffynhobby Жыл бұрын
That’s cool. Sounds like a fun layout.
@franktino6676 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! I love all manufacturers from literally the days of standard gauge going back to 1910 era up until the present day as long as I feel that the item can be restored and made operational if possible. So, it is a double whammy- 1) restoration hobby 2) increase the collection & operating accessories and also enlarge the consists! @@dagryffynhobby
