Mary Cassatt: The Life of an Artist: Art History School

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American artist born in Allegheny City now part of Pittsburgh, USA on 22 May 1844 one of six children born to Robert and Katherine Cassatt. The family were wealthy, and her mother Katherine was a strong believer in educating women to be knowledgeable and socially active. So, it is not surprising that Mary Cassatt depicted the 19th century New Woman from the woman's perspective.
She studied art initially in the US, but spent most of her life painting in France, returning occasionally to America to see friends. In Paris she met the artist Edgar Degas and they remained close friends with for the rest of his life. She became a member of the Impressionist group and helped develop Impressionism alongside Claude Monet, Eduard Manet and Camille Pissarro.
Although she never married, she was enchanted by her nieces and nephews and excelled in painting children, who dominate her subject matter. She is best known for her paintings of mother and child groups and fashionable portraits and in 1893 she created her most famous painting, The Child's Bath. Her early work with the impressionists is probably her best and is sometimes known as the painter and poet of the nursery. Her paintings are filled with light and joy, perhaps, not what you might expect from the brush of a strong-minded and somewhat stubborn woman. She was at her best with other artists who she saw as her intellectual equals. A strong supporter of the votes for women campaign, she lived into her 80’s but unfortunately, her life did not end well.

Many years ago I made a trip to Canada from israel where I was then living with my son aged 3 years. I wanted to take home some prints for my sons bedroom walls and to help him begin to appreciate art. He chose two by Mary Cassatt and one by Picasso. We still have them!

I adore her determination, her stamina and her devotion to her creativity of her artistic achievements in her paintings. Stubborn, headstrong and feisty she certainly was contributed to her determination to achieve her art. Being a wealthy woman certainly helped her travel to many countries to feast her eyes on the old Masters. I just love her fiery spirit and whole hearted dedication to painting.

My first-ever research paper was about Mary Cassatt, when I was in eighth grade, newly arrived as an immigrant at Southampton Middle School. My English proficiency was limited at the time. Mr. Collins, my English teacher, randomly assigned me to write a research paper on her. Little did I know the impact it would have on me as a photography enthusiast. My most artistic photographs captured the loneliness of my two little cousins in America.

Thank you for this wonderful coverage of Cassatt, Paul. I must have watched it previously on another account, bc it was bookmarked in my browser. But it's well worth any number of re-views. Cassatt was a trailblazer in a lengthy series of pivotal moments in history for art, women and humankind concurrently, much as we are in now. It's hard to find a piece of hers that I don't like. Among my favorites are Little Girl in a Blue Armchair, Woman Bathing and The Child's Bath. I would have loved to have been her travel companion to Egypt and discovered different cultures' art. The family could have gone back to the US or Europe without us. We would have just globetrotted and arted together forevermore. Thanks again, Paul.

You are showing me so very many more stunning paintings than I could ever manage to see in real life, even if younger and with good health. Your art history classes are among the most memorable of my lengthy lifetime. Mary Cassatt was surely never considered as important as her fellow impressionists but should have been. I painted and always used a male name to sign. It worked. Always wondered if signing my own name would have mattered. Thank you again. 🤓

My Grandaddy Frederick A Sweet wrote the first Biography of Ms. Cassat. He was Curator of paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago and bought dozens of her works during his decades there for the Museum.

I had to go on a trip and was unable to bring the book of her life and the place we went had books in another language. This was helpful and I will definitely be watching your content!
