Person with a degree in early modern history here: women certainly had more power than we are often lead to believe in history, but not in the way you would think. They were totally oppressed by the law and social customs, but they often worked within the system to gain what power they could, which could make them quite ruthless and who could blame them, honestly. Interestingly, the women here would have mostly had more power than in later years when parliament increased its power and more republics arose in Europe, because while women couldn’t hold elected positions, they were biologically intertwined in monarchies, so it was often easier for them to grasp onto some power, even if that power was tenuous and based on reproducing. People don’t realize that women’s rights in Europe mostly declined during the early modern period for that and other reasons. Anyway, women were certainly f*cked by the system, but they still had an abundance of brains and agency to work within structures. So this show does an incredible job of showing that.

To add to the convo on the female characters in this: it's worth remembering that this is set during the last decade of Shakespeare's life, and just after the hugely popular reign of Elizabeth I - society was still incredibly sexist, but powerful, influential women (real and fictional) were definitely in the public eye!

They would have used various oils and/or possibly lard for lube. As royalty, James likely would have had numerous scented oils at his disposal even in the woods on a hunt. Or whatever they used to oil the leather horse tack. It's possible he did prep himself in anticipation on going for a "ride" but also possible given what we see of his tastes that he liked/wanted it rough and painful.

I'm amazed the vindication re:prunes face wasn't more smug. I would be. They cut the finger off for the ring is what I'm assuming - possibly to use it for official letter seals? Carr can absolutely do one (wait for next ep) and I'm personally of the opinion that if james bottomed regularly he probably prepped before coming to George. YOUR FACES. (lube was absolutely a thing, mostly oil or lard of sorts) And the kings hunting expeditions were full on glamping - giant expensive tents with all the mod cons in the carts behind.
