The sound quality was meant to sound that way. The idea for the recording was to give it that old 50s/60s black supper club/jook joint type of feel that comes with that grittiness and special soul you hear when you listen to music on 45s (vinyl) and you hear that popping/crackling which is why the cinematography was the way it was as well, to give more depth to that throwback feeling.

Since you love both Mary and Mariah, you'll be stoked to know that they actually have a duet called It's A Wrap (Remix). There isn't a video or a live performance of it, and it's basically a deep cut from one of Mariah's 2009 album where the second verse is sung by Mary, but it's one hell of a kiss-off. Mariah's vivid songwriting shines on it (it features a rare, violently threatening Mariah lyric that straight up goes, "I should crack you right in your forehead") from and it's also doo wop influenced, so I'm pretty sure you'll love that. And of course it features KILLER vocals and emoting from both artists. You just HAVE to check it out, and I'mma keep commenting this one until you do. Haha. 😉

This song was from her second album called "My Life." As you probably know by now, this song is a remake of Rose Royce's 1967 classic of the same name. Not much more to this except Rose Royce is a band, not a soloist and the lead singer broke down and cried on the original--which Mary thankfully did not emulate. Mary's version charted better on the hot 100 peaking at #22 to Rose Royce's #70. Rose Royce had a better showing on the hip hop charts at #10 to Mary's #13. Both versions of the song wasn't truly appreciated until years after they were released. The My Life album was lyrically profound autobiographical journey that will get you in touch with emotions you didn't know exists. She co-wrote every song on the album except "No one else" and this song. Her first album was called "What's the 411." During that time she had a tumultuous relationship with KCI from Jodeci/KCI and Jojo. "My life" was about the aftermath of that period and an overall low point in her life. The record label almost shelved the album because they thought it was too dark. She had to fight to get it released. Part of the compromise was she put the 3 most upbeat songs first on the album and released the two remakes and the two most upbeat songs as singles. The "dark stuff" stays on the album. The singles from this album were: Be happy Mary Jane all night long I'm going down You bring me joy/I love you Years later she said if she had her way she would've released "My Life" as a single and if my memory serves me correctly "I never want to live without you" and "you gotta believe." More than anything it would make sense to have "My life" as the lead track rather than buried as track number 7 on the album bearing its name. If you ever get a chance to listen to the stuff the record company suits referred to as dark you will see just how they essentially shackled her creativity. My life: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emHId2uGZpxqnKM I never want to live without you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX3RdJmhotWrp6s Don't Go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoHXkKOfnLiNmsk You gotta believe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ-tdWSfmJaZe9E Im the only woman: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnKxiKmPn5qbsMk Mary's joint: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6GXeqqLlL1soZY Be with you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKGsq4GGqap4gpo This is where it all started with Mary J Blige.
