your Minx reminded me of replacing the engine in my Singer Gazelle, we blew it up racing my dad up the M1, he had a Hillman Avenger? . The smell of burning onions foretold the anarchy within. Towing back home was exciting, I'm sure he forgot I was on the other end. got a scrapyard replacement. solid cars.

My birthday is June 1958 so the Minx is as old as me pretty much. I too am still going strong and I'm pleased to say as yet don't need a new water pump. I am heartened to see that I'm not the only one who completes work on an old car and still has a bucket load of washers and usually a vital component left over!!! Highly entertaining as ever.

The guy who came up with the idea of adding tetra ethyl lead to petrol, Thomas Midgley junior, (who also invented aerosol can cfc ozone killer gas) famously demonstrated the safety of the chemical to an audience of fuel company executives by pouring it on his hands and inhaling it for one minute. Which caused him to be bed ridden for the next few months. Epic job snorting the snake oil tube to prove it wasnt real. P.s. dump truck blues is brilliant. Big hand for julian.

In 1992 my late father put a 'Broquet fuel catalyst' in the tank of his 2.3l Bedford CF camper. It was a wire basket containing magic pellets. It was still there 6 years and 25k miles later when he sold it. I remember the marketing blurb claiming that it made Spitfires fly on crap fuel or some such. Loving your work- stay loose!

Back in the late fifties our family transport was a '39 Commer van based on the Hillman Minx of the period. It was replaced by a '34 Morris 10/4 which was in much better shape than the Commer despite being five years older, one of the features of the Morris that appealed to Dad was the hydraulic brakes, Dad being a mechanic could see they were the future, in those pre-MOT test days Dad had to scrap the Commer due to the brakes losing their 'bite' due to chassis rust. When the cable brakes were applied the cables would tighten up causing the rotten frame to flex rather than push the shoes against the drums. I remember those ads in the motoring mags and the Expand and Fart which promised you could 'Save ££££££££s! Happy Days!

Hey bro, you made my day again, excellent video. Very funny and great music with John, love it. The tube you were asking for is a sort of fuel catalyst. Yours is one of the first models. Later they were a bit more functional and were not fitted in the fuel line, but thrown the whole thing in the fuel tank. A friend of mine has it in his 1966 early shovelhead. He blown up 3x his engine, but that was more for a oil problem (I think). I prefer to add a liquid special for lead. About your water pump: wasn't it easier to change the wrong pump with the right one instead all those modifications? 🤪. I've some old leaves here for your next project front suspension and tubes and bends for your Marie Jane car Cheers mate, keep in touch

Ya know Bryan I personally don't think they did but it it gave the person hopes that it was helping . I had a big Dodge at that time with a 440 cubic inch high compression engine. It didn't like the new fuel at all . It would ping on a hot day regardless of timing. There was however a gadget that helped with that . It was a water injection system that pulled water into the intake and that cooled down the air and hot spots of carbon in the combustion chamber. The mid to late 70s here in the US was a ruff time for hot rods . The EPA stripped us of all the lead in fuel and Zinc in the oil . And Cigarettes went from 50 cents a pack to a dollar .....lol 😂

Inside the tube is a series of sintered lead /alloyed metal balls which were supposed to infuse the fuel. .In the eighties I used them straight into t ?he tank without any adverse affects. My engine had original valves{1951} and carried on running well for over 10 years without valve damage.

I ran a 1961 Minx 3C back in the day, I bought it in 1965 and it was showing some signs of rust even at 4 and a bit years.. Engine was a 1600 which was completely Knackered, but as I had bought if from the Rootes dealership they replaced it under warranty after the AA took up the case. It turned out to have been a company car and had done 140k. As always I drained the engine for a service when I bought the car and it looked more like gear oil as it oozed out. Engine rattled like a can of marbles when I put fresh oil in. After the dealer fitted the new engine iit made a decent roundabout for a while.

'Close but no cigar' on the engine, it's 21 days younger than me...maybe in better nick! My grandad had a Minx like this from new and then passed it on to my dad in '67. I don't think ours had the bench front seat or column change though. We only had it a couple of years and traded it in at Rolfes of Romsey for Lord Mountbatten's Mk3 Zodiac Estate. That did have a bench seat, so I was able to ride up front which cured my problem with being car sick.

The fuel line lead thingy is the makings of a pipe whatsit. add petrol and a fuse. As for horsepower robbing by leaving the fan off ,Me and mates did that around 1970ish, and being apprentices we had access to lathes etc. The flywheel on the mates hillman was machined down to around 2/3rds of it original mass. This was because the engine needed rings but we were too cash poor to afford a gasket set and rings, bearings etc. so by lightning the flywheel ,the idea was to add power. It did the opposite as the car refused to idle properly.

Those 'read replacement' units were big in the classic car mags when leaded petrol stopped. IIRC, Practical Classics published some test that concluded that they didn't work well. One of their advertisers (some classic Ford dealer) got very angry, since they advertised that all their classics were 'converted to run on unleaded' by fitting one of these. I think they threatened to stop buying advertising space in the magazine. Dunno if they worked or not, I used additives.....

Definitely a lead replacement gadget. They were usually filled with pellets made from some sort of alluminium alloy and were supposed to gradually dissolve as the fuel went over them . A mate of mine used one on an old late 50's Austin cambridge and he did another 80k miles after fitting it with absolutely no valve seat problems. Maybe they did work ...
