The bassist is Carline Ray who also sang. Died aged 88. The drummer is, I think, Mickey Roker. Brilliant lead-in by bass, pick-up by Mary Lou before leading us into the introductory chords after the teaser. If someone wants to know what swing is, he/she can't do better than listen to this masterful demo by the Goddess herself.

Those dense, dissonant chords, like the one at 0:51, are coma-inducingly beautiful, I can't stop listening to them

Can't wait for the big tribute to Mary Lou Williams on Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at Park Ave Christian Church in NYC. A full performance of her third Mass, "Mary Lou's Mass" along with several of her other pieces will be performed by a 12-voice choir and jazz quartet.

Thanks a lot for uploading this treasure. Be Bop has many fathers but only one mother : Mary Lou Williams. The woman on bass is Carline Ray but I don't know who's the drummer, sorry.

Not right man, ML Williams born in 1910 was there before the bebop and influenced in the beginning by Earl Hines and Fats Waller...

Drummer is probably Max Roach. Could also be Tony Williams, but there is no evidence she played with Tony. Also looks a bit like Max Roach (4:17), especially during the time period, and we have evidence that Mary Lou played with Roach around this time, from the album "NEWPORT IN NEW YORK '72: THE JAM SESSIONS, VOL. 2 " hope this helps!

You're probably right. I think I'm wrong about the drummer being Mickey Roker. Nevertheless, a great demo.

No way that's the official Max Roach--the Dean of Modern Drumming, or Bebop--even if he has the same name. He tends to set his cymbals at the vertical angle favorred by younger, fusion drummers.

I'm surprised Mary Lou is using a lead sheet for a tune this basic--unless she hadn't played it much previously. It's a long-standing standard (Walter Donaldson?) that rarely is heard these days. She's taking it in Eb and has a lot of engaging, funky variations in her right hand. The bassist is effective, but I can almost feel the drag of having to maintain a 4/4 walking bass grrove with your thumb. I realize a number of method books teach that way, and she shows it can work. All the same, I'd recommend new bassists listen to Mingus, Pettiford, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, Doug Watkins and strive for the same--which is usually easier, even on electric, when the index finger, or 2nd and 3rd, fingers do the work.
@DeannaWitkowski7 жыл бұрын
There's no way that that's a lead sheet. It's probably a set list. Williams recorded "My Blue Heaven" with this arrangement in 1964 on Black Christ of the Andes.
