wendy I love your first name ! and arrington like pollyanna harrington when I met artist brian froud who did the preliminary paintings for dark crystal and labyrinth at a convention, his wife wendy froud was there and nobody paid much attention to her even though she designed all the puppets I got up and asked HER a question "were you named after wendy in peter pan" she said yes and she grew up thinking she was THE wendy and believed in fairies and ended up making them as puppets later that day, waiting in line for their autograph, two french girls behind me, probably jealous I could speak english and discuss with them, noticed my disney bag and clothes and started to make anti disney remarks "laburinth, now that was a good movie, unlike all that crap from disney" loud enough so I could hear so I asked them "how is your son toby froud" (who played the baby in labyrinth) they said "he s not here with us because he s in new york working on all the giant puppets for the lion king broadway show" so there ! you can like apples and oranges, same family! no doubt they re mary poppins fans

You know, I would have loved a cameo Of Julie Andrews - perhaps at the end, on a cloud somewhere, where they both land, (Julie's and Emily's) the original and the new, great each other with: " Hello Mary" (Julie) - "Mary" (Emily) - with both then looking at the camera saying - "We never explain anything." A coven of Marys flying through the sky helping children in need. Course, I'm sure this couldn't be done, breaks with the books to be sure.

Thank you for creating your video comparisons. I have lived by Mary Poppins rules (and sing every song front to back) my whole life and was thrilled to get another cinematic taste that not only honored the first movie, but made Mary more like P.L. Travers had written her...more sternly. I can imagine yet another movie with yet another actress playing her for another generation...continually making her life lessons relevant to multiple generations. If you think about it, every reader pictures the author's story in their own heads as they read, and multiple Mary's helps her never age. Love the first, love this one. No need to decide which masterpiece is better, enjoy both over and over again...after all, Pamela wrote 8 different books with lots of stories. Hopefully more movies are to come. I asked a younger acquaintance of mine several years ago (before I knew there would be a new Mary) if she had grown up on Mary Poppins, and the answer was no. Nor had she shared the former film with her young children. I immediately sent her a 40th Anniversary DVD. (It has more background material.) I was nervous this new film would fall flat by trying to copy the former. Like any piece of art, it ain't art if it's a copy, so I am thrilled by the new film and it's new cache of delightful songs to add to my repertoire. I've seen it 4 times already, and I adore all the loving references (easter eggs) made to former cast members and relationships to the first movie. Gorgeous! The cover is not the book!

Also, my toddler got bored at around the Topsy scene so it was even harder to stay engaged in the tired plot line. lol

I saw it with a friend and her three children, a toddler (who applauded at times!), a pre teen '(my star wars friend who helps me with the new toys because I have no patience with legos and never was into it before) and a teenager pretending to be bored but actually liked it it was a premiere show with special activities like decorate your own kite (and keep it), have your picture taken with the original mary and bert (really cinema clerks) and received commemorative buttons, and balloons we all had a lot of fun then I went to see it again alone and that s when I cried and cried two very different experiences like star wars, it was great to pass it on to a new generation accepting to turn off their I pods to watch a movie and be as thrilled as I was in 1964

This was a DELIGHTFUL sequel. The original was and is AMAZING and can obviously never be outdone. Had you any inclination that it could be? The awe-inspiring imagery, the catchy little tunes and stunning visuals had me smiling in my seat like at little child at the carnival. I went in wanting to enjoy it (instead of judge it) and that's exactly what I did. What a wonderful break from the usual film fodder and the drudgery of our current affairs in this country. It was downright delicious to see Black characters spicing up scenes in this film too. Seeing our own Dick Van Dyke was a rare and unexpected treat! When he got up and danced atop that desk, I like to have slipped out of my seat. FABULOUS! He still has The Moves! I do not think Julie Andrews would have detracted or distracted from the film in anyway. I rather think her awesome presence would have enhanced the enchantment of this adorable film...in a most delightful way. I smiled and giggled through the entire film like a child...PRICELESS! I plan to take my mother, young niece and nephews to see Mary Poppins Returns soon. By the way, the original Mary Poppins was the first movie in a movie theatre that my mother ever saw when my father took her on her 1st date over 50 years ago. Their marriage didn't last, but the magic of Mary Poppins lives on! BRAVO!

alistair gunn-malcolm ok I won't compare. But regarding the new one..for starters there was no mesmerizing catchy good music. The music was not good. It was meh. The original -I loved every song and after watching it the first time around as a kid walked away singing the songs. Mary Poppins was more gentle -I loved her interactions with herself in the mirror several times. She was funny, witty, warm, motherly. Great voice, beautiful. I can go on. Also in the original she was more intimate with the kids (singing them to sleep). That song was great. I love Emily as an actress and have seen her in many things but didn't connect with her as Mary. I know she was trying to be more like the book but she was TOO stern looking. No gentle sweetness like Andrews. The kids in the original were sweet and memorable. They had more lines and character. Jane was cute and sweet, Michael had funny faces. I loved their song for the perfect nanny. In this one-nothing. None of them stood out. Not memorable. The little girl played her part well I guess. Lin-Manuel-awful for the part. I didn't like his little rap sequence for a Mary Poppins film. They tried to make it too modern. It didn't fit and I didn't like him as the character, sorry. He had no charisma or touching scenes with the kids, mary such as the first did. There's lots more...I just love the original.
@mizzwanned6 жыл бұрын
Another thing is they did it too much with the cgi-whatever you call it. The ocean scene, the cartoon scene was too much. The original had as well with the green screen in everything but they did a great job. It just fit and their cartoon scene was everything with the painting, and the carousel horses that went off track. And the dancing penguins. One of my favorite scenes and songs -a jolly holiday with Mary. It's just epic. I watched it again the other night after watching the new one. It made me want to go watch the original. That movie is so nostalgic. I am sure it is different to anyone that didn't see it as a child and are now seeing it as an adult. I am also sure the new one is good to kids these days. Not saying it's not.

The anachronism of BMX bikes in 1930s London was a bit much, and although the new score is energetic, it just doesn't have the wit in the lyrics that the original Sherman Brothers score had. I will say that the first glimpse of Mary silhouetted against the sky did make me tear up a bit, and I absolutely adored seeing Dick Van Dyke in his all singing all dancing glory, along with the throw-back to the wooden leg joke. I think that the original had a lighter touch - this felt a bit like the script was trying to hit you over the head with just how magical everything was going to be, and some of the numbers could have been whittled down a bit. It is refreshing to see 2D animation back up on the big screen where it belongs, tho' so bravo to all the artists involved. Truth time - I used to work for Disney, and I met Julie Andrews while on the job; fortunately saw her coming my way, had a moment to internally prepare while silently squeeing OMG it's Mary Poppins, so - she's always going to be my Mary. She was my childhood and it was such a mind blowing experience to meet her at a time in life when I could absolutely appreciate the moment as it was happening.

My thoughts exactly. This script followed the original to a fault, like an annoying young sibling trying to copy their older sibling but not doing a very good job at it. I mean, it's cute, but not great. This was especially apparent in the wanna be Chim Chimney/Step in Time sequence and the Topsy scene. Two scenes that just seemed wedged in their for no other purpose but to follow in the steps of the original. My big question is, are the kids ever going to get their mother's bowl back from Topsy now that Mary's gone? lol

I'm 60 and a lover of Mary Poppins and Julie Andrews in general, as her 3 famous movies exhibit a great role model for young women- smart, assertive, fun, confident, growing. Saw Mary Poppins Returns and was impressed! It hit all the marks- no ones voice will ever compare to Julie Andrews-but that's Ok! I loved the subtle connections to the original movie, made my 21 year old daughter and me laugh and tear up. I'd like to buy a set of the original and new as my old VCR MP movie just broke last night:(

Look, in strict rigor Mary Poppins returns is simply a sequel, it is not a remake, it does not pretend to replace or be better than the first one. This just plans to continue the story.
@AStageForTheKingdom5 жыл бұрын
It is exact same story as the original though, so technically it is also a remake

I’m glad P.L Travers book has influenced Emily more than Julie. We love Julie’s but this would’ve pleased P.L more even though they made a sequel against her will and the animation sequence is used other than that she would’ve liked it. But considering this is a sequel with a slight difference this proves Mary is a timelord it explains the face switch and different attitude lol.

Great movie!!! I saw the original movie when I was 4 years old and many times after that. This is just as incredible return. We have seen the movie twice. Loved the Vaudeville act with its tongue and cheek humour. I believe the movie should get a number of Oscar nods and Emily Blunt and Lin-Manual should get the Oscars for the performances.

Saw it today. Was so glad they kept the spirit of the original alive. They didn't try to sneak in jokes for adults or change the style. It was an enjoyable 2 hours

I thought Emily did a wonderful job as Mary Poppins. But one thing took me out of the film a few times with her performance ... There were a number of times where Emily was smiling so broadly that you could tell she was having a fantastic time making the film. But I don't see that as the Mary Poppins character. Even when Julie Andrews was happy and smiling in the original film, it was a very controlled happiness. Emily's Mary seems to be bursting out of her skin-happy. I would be taken out of the film-magic each time that happened; thrilled to see and share Emily's exuberance, but no longer seeing Mary Poppins in her.
@AnzuBrief6 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I think they got it all wrong when they said Emily's Mary is closer to the books. Julie's Mary was sterner, as you said, even when she was smiling it was a very controlled happiness and when she was doing something fun she did it "under pressure". Emily's Mary is very joyful, it seems like her sterner side is mostly a very slim charade and inside she obviously is full of love and joy.

Saw the film last night and really enjoyed it, as did the rest of the full house as there was applause at the end. I agree the best song/dance number was The Cover is Not the Book. Emily Blunt was practically perfect in every way.

It definitely does!! I am totally smitten with it! There is much to inspire as well as to lift spirits. Love the music, dancing, characters and a show that reminds and helps us reclaim 'magic'. It needn't be left behind in childhood. It's as if the whole movie reminds us of the sweetness of us all and bids us all 'remember'

I'm only gonna say this once. Growing up in the UK, some kids move and the accent just a few miles away can be totally different so as they grow up in the new place they pick up that accent but it's always a bit off, I've seen it often. So I have no problem with Berts accent, I might even say Dick Van Dyke was an accidentall genius haha.

I dont think we should compare them. Its not fair to the actors or to the spirit of this great story. I thought Mary Poppins Returns was fabulous, loved every minute of it, the actors were superb, the music wonderful. I think it will take a while for the new songs to be remembered because those old songs had such distinctive, pronunciation and unusual words. Nevertheless less this new movie made me cry, smile and left me with the desire to see it again. Emily Blunt was superb.

A very welcome, although a little wary of what they may or may not have done to ruin my childhood, it was a wonderful experience all over again. I can't believe that it's 4 years older than me and both films still make me smile. Which is the point of both films, if the world is feeling a little threatening treat yourself to a happy and fun sequel that does just as much for you as the first film.

Dick van Dyke's affected accent in 64 was practically perfect in every way! As he recounts, he worked on the film with over a dozen accomplished British actors, costarred with Andrews and had a voice coach, well Pat O'Malley. NOBODY corrected his over the top Cockney accent. To be fair, Andrew's flowergirl accent in "My Fair Lady" on stage was pretty well over the top too.

Dick van Dyke's manner of speaking has such a high nostalgic value to me that I didn't even realise people found it a bad accent. Dick has Dutch blood but I have no idea that's part of the 'problem'. I loved his manner of speaking and gave him so much character
