Really interesting. Grew up in Battlefield and went to Battlefield Primary School - though my first school days were at Langside Old Parish Church (by The Monument) as there had been a fire at Battlefield Primary. Then some time at Holmlea Primary until repairs to BP were finished. Been thinking about Glasgow a lot recently as it's an incredible 50 years ago this year that I graduated from Glasgow University, and have not lived in Glasgow for about 45 years. Also interesting video on Gregory's Girl - I played on the soundtrack. Glad I found this site, will do some more exploring.....

Brilliant video sir. Love the photo of Cathcart castle, I remember it too. I grew up in Pollok and know the area well. Couple of interesting points perhaps. 1st - The origin of 'Crookston' has been told differently to me from relatives who were in the Barrhead and Neilston historical society. The original settlement of Crookston was south of the castle, closer to where Crookston Rd meets the Barrhead Road. The name came from Robert De Croc - Crocs town or toun. Old scots for an area of arable land. De Croc established the settlement. 2nd My granda told a story of a mate of his who stayed in Valeview or near there. They would experience ghosts of soldiers in the house every now and then. As if they were fighting or shouting. Him and his mate where having a wee bevvy, this must have been in the 1930s, when the ghosts appeared. Terrified him. His mate just laughed he was so used to them. 3rd. Used to stop at that tree as a kid and thought it was rubbish until my Geography teacher told me their lifespan, so who knows. 4th - Dandelions. Weird that I did that as a kid with all the history around me.

Cathcart castle was pulled down in early one Sunday morning in 1980. It is believed that this was to prevent it being declared a monument which the City council would have to maintain.
@AstonishingGlasgow8 ай бұрын
There are a few rumours and untruths about the end of the castle. The one I heard was contractors were asked by the council to clear up the site but the letter had the word UP missing so the contractor cleared the site. Truth is, the wall nearest the cliff collapsed after a spell of prolonged rain and the rest would have collapsed if it had been left alone. The council knocked it down before it had the chance to land on anybody. It is a real shame it wasnt saved earlier and none of the stones remain in the original position. The rubble was tipped into Queens dock where the SEC now stands.

@@AstonishingGlasgow Thank you, that is an interesting story. My mother and father taught my sister, my three brothers and me to respect family and tradition at an early age. We are very proud of our Scottish ancestry but that said we are Americans. The last verse of the first poem I memorized is as follows " Wha for Scotland's King and Law. Freedom's sword will strongly draw, Freedom stand, or freeman fa', Caledonia ! on wi' me ! " Thanks again and may God Bless.

Hi Great video thanks!! Just to clarify. I thought the actual site of the battle of Langside was more at the location of the new Victoria Hospital & the south east corner of Queen's Park (which is why it's called Queens Park), not slightly south of there on Battlefield Road? Could be both of course? Also, you leaped from Carlisle to Mary's trial in about 2 seconds. Mary spent most of her life in prison in Sheffield Castle & Manor Lodge (home of the Earl & Dutchess of Shrewsbury). This is where she spent many years (nearly 15) plotting various escapes, had interesting relationship with Dukes & Earls in her attempts to gain favour south of the border, and wrote many controversial letters that contributed to her eventual execution. It's a shame so many historians are totally ignorant of Mary's time in Sheffield but if you make any future MQOS's videos you might want to cover this part of her life? I once met an Oxford University historian who thought Mary had been held in Shrewsbury (not Sheffield) before her execution in Northamptonshire. That's how ignorant some "experts" are about Mary.
@AstonishingGlasgow8 ай бұрын
Thanks. I couldn't tell you the exact site of the fighting but I thought it was more important to be standing on Battlefield Road looking up to the monument and given the new Victoria is barely 100 meters from this point I'm pretty sure this land was involved in the battle. The reason I didn't go into Mary's life after the battle? This is Astonishing Glasgow so I am more interested in telling Glasgow story and how Mary passed through the city rather than telling Mary's story in complete detail.

I remember going to Haggis Castle years ago. I thought it had a connection with Mary as well. Probably built after her time.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Crossmyloof. 'Loof' being old Scots for palm of the hand. Mary held her cross in her hand when fleeing the losing battle. It's pictured in the plaster frieze above the door of the Corona bar at Shawlands cross.
@AstonishingGlasgow8 ай бұрын
There were a few things I left out because it was just a brief telling of her connections to Glasgow. There is an area of Rutherglen called the pant which is reputedly where her horse ran out of steam but I simply didn't have a way to weave it into the story.

Wasn’t Pollok bought by Glasgow City Council between the 2 World Wars? Does it count as second oldest building?
@AstonishingGlasgow4 күн бұрын
Pollok house and the park were gifted to the city by Sir John Stirlling Maxwells daughter in I think the 1960s. The house dates from 1750's so is newer than Crookston though the original castle in Pollok Park would date to the same time as Crookston but only one wall still exists og Pollok castle.

Loved the video because I love Scottish history, but I also love genealogy and the irony of Mary’s story is that while Queen Elizabeth may have callously spilled Mary’s blood through a spiteful beheading, Elizabeth’s flesh lie rotting in her grave while Mary’s blood flows on through her 40 thousand descendants today including our present Royal Family and our late Queen Mother who was proud of this 🏴
