Ahh Anxious Generation is at the top of my list! I’m a therapist to teens and it’s so clear to see as an adult with the data understanding that the age of smartphones is so negatively contributing to many of their problems 😭 Julie Bogart & The Brave Learner is my favorite!! I also love her other one - Raising Critical Thinkers. Also have liked Sarah Mackenzie and the Read-Aloud Family I think. Adding the others to my list!

Yes! It’s is so sad! And I see the effects in my day to day all the time 😭. I didn’t know she wrote another book! I will have to check it out! Thank you for the recommendation! 🥰

I second the Read Aloud Family! My kid is barely turning three but I found that if we have a really hard time full of emotions, if we sit down to read together it really calms the situation and creates a great bonding moment. ❤

Thanks for sharing these! What you were saying about Natalie Wexler’s findings is such a strong argument for the Charlotte Mason method and reading living books, in my opinion. I would’ve retained so much more from my public school education if I had been making connections to interesting stories in my mind the whole way through.

Great recs, Mary! I’m excited to check some of those out. Dumbing Us Down and teach your own are awesome, I read those in the very beginning of this whole journey. I actually thought we’d be unschoolers bc the arguments are so compelling but then I realized who I was, lol, and there’s no way. There are just too many wonderful programs and resources out there that my kiddos likely wouldn’t come to naturally. I feel like- Ok kids, I’ll bring in what I think is great and necessary and after that, you do you! And of course, the beauty of homeschooling is that we can change it up if it’s not connecting with our kids.

Lol I felt the same way about unschooling as a theory, but then I knew based on my personality I couldn’t implement in reality 😅 BUT I still take advice and concepts from it and implement it in the way I teach the girls! 🥰

OMG I hate how people think public school education gives them socialization when they really don't get to talk to each other. My oldest goes to a Friday school that's mostly playing outdoors. He probably gets more in that one day than public school kids get all week.
@MaryBarfield3 ай бұрын
I know! The terrible part is I used to think like that but then my oldest went to a charter school for Kindergarten and I realized how ridiculous that type of thinking was because she was getting so little time for interactions with her peers 🤦🏼♀️

@@MaryBarfield schools here don't even let them talk at lunch
Out of all the Homeschool’s KZbin channels you are definitely the most similar to my style of homeschool. I’ve read most of these but haven’t read the anxious one. We need that because my 5.5 year old is an anxious one already. Thank you! 😊

Also I agree with the social media stuff. My oldest will be 17 so like you said, I unfortunately can’t go back in time and change it. He will be ok but it will be very different with my younger too.
@MaryBarfield3 ай бұрын
It’s ok! We can’t go back and change the past so don’t worry about that! All we can do is try and do better moving forward 🥰 my almost 5 year old is my more reserved/anxious one so I have to be mindful of her as well.

A really great podcast to listen to that goes along with The Knowledge Gap is "Sold a Story." It is about how the methods of teaching reading changed from phonics to "whole language learning" which relied on "reading strategies" and "context clues" to read and how that caused literacy to plummet. It was like listening to a thriller.

Oo thank you for the recommendation! I just took a look and it does look like a good compliment to The Knowledge Gap! I’m going to start the podcast today!

The only book in this video that I have read (so far!) is The Anxious Generation and it's really interesting to think about as an elder millennial with a PreK-er. Because she asks me questions all the time about technology from when "I was a kid" and I have to explain that we DIDN'T have all the things and so much of the information he shares in that book makes sense for the generations growing up in it! People think I'm nuts when I say I don't want my kid having a cell phone or social media until they're 16+

It’s such a good book and very eye opening, as well as validating! Also, People look at me the same way 😂 they think it’s incredible I haven’t gotten my kids tablets yet.

A few that I want have on my TBR list are “Teaching From Rest,” “Consider This,” “Know + Tell,” “The Whole Brain Child,” and “Let Them Be Kids”. I haven’t read them yet so no opinion, but I’m hoping to get them read by the end of this year!

There are some new phone options now that are really helpful. Gabb, Pinwheel, Bark. I know with Gabb, internet and social media are not an option.

It's not totally accurate that people are separated that way in prison. They are in an artificial community based on where they live ans whom they live with but it's based on car (Black English, look it up 😂 i don't think there's a Standard Am English word for it) not age. The quiet and free times are controlled but not going to the bathroom. Also, lockdowns become very controlled and solitary too, obviously. It's also separated for safety reasons. Lol the "I said it" part triggered my debate mentality. My brother is in prison... If you watch my Tipsy Turvy Flip Doll video, he lived with my bio dad when it all happened on his 13th birthday and he went off the rails... I don't know anyone who could have done better in that situation
